8 Ministry & Community Updates World Assemblies of Restoration Annual Spring Conference 2013 Wednesday, March 20 -Saturday, March 23, 2013 All meetings and services for the Annual Spring Conference will be held in Savannah, Georgia. We are using two hotels. The links for the hotels will be on the website shortly, but you can call the hotels directly to book your rooms now. 9 PennDOT Receives National Recognition for Litter Cleanup Efforts 1/16/2013- For the ninth consecutive year, PennDOT has been presented with the national Partner Award for its continued support of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and the Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania. The Keep America Beautiful and the U.S. Department of Transportation Partner Award recognizes states for their support of litter-cleanup programs and emphasizes the importance of anti-litter programs through public/private partnerships. Keeping Pennsylvania beautiful is so important to our citizens and our communities, and that is obvious by the number of volunteers who get involved, PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch said. It s a great cause that reduces roadside litter and illegal dumping, while reducing costs to do so. This year s event collected more than 6.7 million tons of unsightly litter from Pennsylvania roadways and other areas including school yards, railroad tracks, trails, waterways, shorelines, as well as parks and wetlands. Volunteers through PennDOT s Adopt-A-Highway program contributed to more than 88 percent of the 6.7 million tons of litter collected. Started in 1990, PennDOT s Adopt-A-Highway Program currently has 7,028 participating groups involving more than 130,000 volunteers who have adopted 16,177 miles of state-maintained roadways. Adopt-A-Highway allows residents to demonstrate their pride in the beautiful state of Pennsylvania. The program solicits volunteers to clear litter on a two-mile section of state highway, four times a year. In addition to benefitting the environment, the effort helps to reduce Penn- DOT maintenance costs. PennDOT provides complete safety training for volunteers as well as orange safety vests and highway warning signs to be used during litter pick-ups. Trash bags are provided and PennDOT will pick up the bagged litter from the roadside. To recognize volunteers efforts, PennDOT posts signs along the highway giving the group full credit for their efforts. 10 The Kells Family - The Power of Prayer The family was traveling to meet Baltimore GRS and GHC employees from a number of centers to participate in the Alzheimer's Walk at Oregon Ridge Park on Saturday, October 27. A short distance from the park, they rounded a curve and were struck by a speeding motorcycle. The motorcycle and driver came through their car severely injuring the parents. The children riding in the back seat were removed from the car with only scratches and abrasions from flying glass. Ian, the dad, (an active duty Army sergeant) has suffered traumatic brain injury (TBI); spent time at Shock/Trauma in the Univ of MD hospital, then at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and at the Polytrauma Unit of the VA Hospital in Richmond, VA. They are hopeful for his full recovery over the next two years. Lucy, the mom, had surgery at Johns Hopkins for a crushed and broken jaw; she is healing quickly and is now undergoing dental reconstruction. In the blink of an eye their lives have changed dramatically. The support from prayer groups and Sunday School classes around the country has been a sustaining force for them. Dear Prayer Group and Sunday School Supporters: We have never met you, but you have impacted our lives tremendously. Following our accident we have been spending most of our time getting well and taking care of one another. Knowing that there are people like you out there, who have been behind us in faith and hope has been an awesome experience. We cannot thank you enough for invoking the power of prayer for us. Our individual recoveries have gone well. We have more work ahead and are more confident that we will all fully recover. Iain spends more time at home with us and has amazed the Army medical teams with his motivation and determination. The children are happy to be in their own home again and I am expecting to finish the dental work I need in the next month. Your kindness, your interest, and your love are felt here.
