Mike remembers very little about the day he triggered an IED while on patrol in Afghanistan... bright flash of light... chaos... noise... smoke... the sounds of chopper blades... then silence. It was only when he woke up weeks later at Walter Reed Army Medical Center that he began to comprehend the extent of his injuries. His left leg was gone... though he swore he could still feel it. His left arm was seriously injured and he lost his thumb. Multiple surgeries repaired the extensive injuries to his internal organs, although he battled serious infections after each surgery. Even though his physical injuries are healing, Mike continues to carry with him invisible scars... silent demons... the aftermath of a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) he suffered when the IED exploded beneath him. He is anxious, impulsive, sensitive to noise and light, unable to do simple problem-solving, and prone to emotional outbursts. He can t remember things that happened hours earlier, and he has problems completing sentences and thoughts. Because I know I can count on your generosity to help heroes like Mike, I have enclosed a special patriotic notepad and a set of personalized address labels as special thanks for your thoughtful and prompt reply. Thousands of veterans are quietly suffering the effects of TBI s. The Pentagon estimates that nearly 360,000 troops have experienced brain injuries during their service to our country. For those who have suffered from TBI s the healing process is often slow, and the need for long term medical attention and support is significant. Veterans like Mike need your help! We must help our American heroes receive the medical attention they need! The American Legion is leading the effort to address the TBI epidemic and to insure that brave Americans, like Mike, do not fall through the cracks of our VA health system. 8 ensure that our wounded warriors who have suffered Traumatic Brain Injuries are provided the best quality care possible. We are there for our nation s heroes... whether we are fighting to ensure they get the care they deserve or providing them with what they need to get our wounded warriors through their long hospital stays and recoveries. Last month, through our program Operation Comfort Warriors, we treated nearly a thousand wounded service members and their families. Wounded soldier Sgt. Sturdevant, who suffered injuries in Afghanistan and is now recuperating at Brooke Army Medical Center, enjoyed the day with his wife and their two sons. It s not only good for me and for all the warriors, but also for the families. We get to see each other out here. We ve gone through rehab together, and it s a great morale boost that all of us can be here together. People are actually supportive of what we are doing and what we ve been through, he said. It shows a lot I know that not everybody can be in the military but for those that support us, it s absolutely fantastic. To them, I say, Thank you with all my heart. Thank you.
