1 Native hunters in the jungles of Africa have a clever way of trapping monkeys. They slice a coconut in two, hollow it out, cut a hole in one half of the shell just big enough for a monkey s hand to pass through. Then they place an orange in the other coconut half before fastening together the two halves of the coconut shell. Finally, they secure the coconut to a tree with a rope, retreat into the jungle, and wait. Sooner or later, an unsuspecting monkey swings by, smells the delicious orange, and discovers its location inside the coconut. The monkey then slips his hand through the small hole, grasp the orange, and tries to pull it through the hole. Of course, the orange won t come out; it s too big for the hole. To no avail the persistent monkey continues to pull and pull, never realizing the danger he is in. While the monkey struggles with the orange, the hunters simply stroll in and capture the monkey by throwing a net over him. As long as the monkey keeps his fist wrapped around the orange, the monkey is trapped. It s too bad. The poor monkey could save its own life if it would let go of the orange. However, it rarely occurs to a monkey that it can t have both the orange and its freedom. That delicious orange becomes a deadly trap. The world sets traps for you that are not unlike the monkey trap. You constantly hear that if you just have enough money, enough stuff, enough power, enough prestige, then you ll be happy. Under that illusion, people spend their whole lives thinking you must have it all. The call of Christianity is unlike that of the world. The world focuses on what you and I get out of life. A Christian should focus on what they can give. When was the last time you went out of your way to encourage someone? I m not talking about the little remark or that wink of an eye. While these things encourage, they are conservative in that there is little required of us. I have always felt that encouragement is something you possess as a resource inside of you; something that needs to be processed and replenished so it will always be there at the ready when someone needs it. That means it requires thinking and a little planning. The type of encouragement I am talking about here is what you might even call scripted. It is something that you tuck away inside your heart like a necessary resource as you begin your day. Then, when you cross paths with someone who looks like they need some encouragement, you reach down inside and pull a bit out and give it away. The Bible gives us many examples of the power of encouragement and none more apparent than the story of the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem. This was a big job a really big job. It would take skill, time and resources, all of which were available in limited quantities. Yet, they got the job done on time and as God had ordained it. Why? I would like to think it was many random acts of kindness committed by God s prophets as they daily walked among the stone and iron workers, the carpenters and masons, encouraging them, complimenting and praising their working spirit. They became conduits of God s grace by which each worker could individually taste the love of God. And, that s what we are when we go out of our way to be encouragers. Look for someone today who needs to experience God s love through you. Dr. Howard Hendricks writes: "Every disciple needs three types of relationships in his life. He needs a Paul who can mentor him and challenge him. He needs a Barnabas who can come alongside and encourage him. And he needs a Timothy, someone that he can pour his life into." Think about it, Jeff 11:00 Nursery Sept. 5th Sept. 11th Sept. 18th Sept. 25th Sept.5th Sept. 12th Sept. 19th Sept. 26th September Nursery Volunteers Angela Edmonson Nina Thompson Nicole Hawkins Michelle Fuqua September Kingdom Kidz Church Volunteers Ken & Lorrie Messer, Teresa Hendricks, Desy Nichols and Holli Bender Della Nichols, John Frazier, Lee Carol Main, Brenda Miller, Emily Bickel, Glenna Stovall, Walt & Carrie Robinson Charlotte Burdette, Chris & Tammy Brumley and Megan Sheldon Jason & Michelle Fuqua September Finance Counting Team Daisy James Steve Smith Ken Messer September Van Drivers Wed.
