The Front Pew Volume 6, Issue 1 January 2018 Birthdays & Anniversaries 2 Contact Information 0 Stone Column 1 United Methodist Women 4 Chili Cook-off 3 Benefit Dinner 6 Christian Education 5 January Calendar 7 The Stone Column According to one reporter, 1968 remains arguably the most historic year in modern American history. It was also a historic time for the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren churches who would merge to form the United Methodist Church. Less than a month later St. Luke s United Methodist Church officially opened. I wondered what was happening in the world 50 years ago, what the people of St. Luke s were talking and praying about when this church was just forming. Here are some of the headlines from 1968: North Korea Captures the USS Pueblo North Vietnam Launches the Tet Offensive Martin Luther King Jr. Assassinated Robert F. Kennedy Assassinated First 747 Jumbo Jet is Introduced Detroit Tigers Win the World Series Olympic Athletes Protest Racism During National Anthem American Television s First Interracial Kiss Airs on Star Trek Apollo 8 First Manned Spacecraft to Orbit Moon I was too young to remember any of these events as they occurred. I skimmed a more extensive list and not surprising, Vietnam was in the news a lot. President Lyndon Johnson made a number of headlines and Richard Nixon was elected president. Indeed, 1968 was a year with events that shaped the world, as I would come to learn. The headlines for 2018 are yet to be written. Like each new year we hope for few that report tragedies and more that celebrate good news. Newspapers and news outlets are in the business of reporting news. We are in the ministry of sharing Good News. May our very lives bear witness to the Good News of Jesus Christ in 2018 and beyond. Peace & Blessings, Eric

4 Page 4 United Methodist Women The Front Pew January is an exciting time for our United Methodist Women. We have a new slate of officers who will be installed at our meeting on Wednesday, January 10 at 6:30. This is also the time for the Call to Prayer and Self-Denial program, a time to learn about the importance of our commitment to leadership development and the potential to equip women and girls for leadership in church and society. Please mark your calendars to attend this important meeting. The executive committee has been meeting and is planning an exciting year for our members. Please join us as we embark on this journey. Open Prayer As we embark on 2018, we remember the words of John Wesley: With regard to my own behavior, I now renewed and wrote down my former resolutions to take no pleasure which does not tend to the glory of God; thanking God every moment for all I do take, and therefore rejecting every sort and degree of it which I feel I cannot so thank Him in and for. Open Prayer every Tuesday evening from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Come and spend time in diligent, purposeful prayer. January Movie Night
5 Page 5 The New Year is here! We have made it through the hustle and bustle of the Christmas Holiday and now we just want to go someplace warm and relax. Right! But let s not forget those around us who are in need. Beginning in January, in addition to our weekly church school offering we will also be collecting canned goods and paper products for the Essexville Food Pantry. On Sunday morning after the bell is rung at 11, someone will be coming to each class room to collect items brought in that week. Let s continue the season of giving as we move into the new year. It is not too early to be thinking about church camp. Michigan Area United Methodist Camps have many camping opportunities for all ages. Registration is now open visit UMCAMP- ING.ORG/EVENTS for more information and to register. There is a $50 coupon available online for first time campers. Coming in February, we will be doing a one-day Valentine VBS on Saturday, February 10. This will be a mini-date- night for parents. Registration will begin at 5:00 with gathering in the sanctuary at 6:30. We will have games, stories, singing and fun. Watch the website and February newsletter for more Have you ever wondered what the attendance is in Sunday School? For the 15 weeks we have had Sunday School since September 10 we have averaged 24 students each week. We have collected $362 in offerings. We have given $73 to UMCOR for disaster relief and $34 to the Good Samaritan Rescue Mission. Thank you to all the students and teachers for their dedication and generous giving.
6 Benefit Dinner for Julie Nelson Benefit fundraiser for Julie Nelson, Sunday, January 14th from noon to 4:00 p.m. A taco/nacho bar luncheon and auction will be held at The Palace, 1500 Woodside, Essexville. Breakfast Book Club January 13th at 10:00 a.m. in the Church café. Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe by Max Lucado. A curious stranger lands at Chelsea Chamber s door, and with him, an even more curious string of events. Soon, customers are flocking to the Higher Grounds Café, and not just for the cupcakes and cappuccino. They ve come for the internet connection to the divine. Now the café has become the go-to place for people in search of answers to life s biggest questions. Join in a light breakfast and lively discussion of our latest selection. Books are available to borrow and return from the Church library located in the north/south hallway near the main entrance of the fellowship hall. All are welcome! Thank You The Stone Family would like to say a big Thank You! to everyone for the Christmas gifts given to the family over the holiday s from the congregation. We are blessed to have such a great church family.
