1 Port Edwards United Methodist Church Port Edwards, Wisconsin Church News for the Month of May 2017 Picture yourself coming in from a cold snowy morning into church. It s Christmas time, so you walk in to the sanctuary and the trees glisten with Chrismons, sparkling in the morning light. The windows glow with color and greenery scents the air. A Christmas carol plays and you smile as you feel wrapped in the warmth of holidays and traditions. What I did not mention, but most of you assume? That the church is warm. When you picture this event, my guess is that you feel warm inside and would expect the church to be warm as well. Our church has enjoyed the luxury of industrial boilers since it was built. These boilers have been well maintained, thanks to the trustees (especially Jeff Taylor), for many years. However, nothing lasts forever, and the boilers have worn down. The Trustees have watched and planned for replacement for several years. They have tried to stretch out the lifespans of the two boilers that are still running, but it is time to replace them. Each year our church has put money aside toward the boiler replacement and has $16,000 available, but the cost is extensive. Bids are showing a requirement for $50,000, so we would need to raise $34,000. At this time, we are asking for special donations toward that amount. To get the job done while it s warm this summer, we need to raise our funds by June 1. During this spring you will hear many messages related to the boilers and how to give toward the replacement. Please ask questions and consider if you could give. A gift toward the boilers is the gift of warmth for many years. This means a new generation of United Methodists will enjoy the warmth of our beautiful sanctuary for many years to come, just as we have enjoyed the generosity of past Methodists. Please think about giving and bring the warmth of God s love to our church for years to come!

A gardening program will be presented by congregation members Ellen Mazurek, Judy Miller and Chris Landowski. All are certified Wisconsin Master Gardeners ready to share their gardening knowledge and experience. They will have many handouts. Join us and learn proper tree and shrub pruning techniques. The benefits of making compost with yard waste and kitchen scraps and how our community can save money. Refresher on amending lawn and garden soils with your own compost. Question and Answer time: Ask the Gardner? Perennial Plant Exchange: Is this the year you need to divide your overgrown garden plants? Well. divide them up, put them in small pots to share with friends and neighbors and bring them along to trade or share with the folks at the Gathering Chancel Flowers Calendar We sincerely thank you for volunteering to render this service to our church for the dates assigned. However, if you will not be able to bring flowers on your assinged Sunday, will you please exchange with someone else on the list? Placement of one or two arrangements either fresh or artificial in the sanctuary before Sunday service. After the Sunday service, please see that your arrangements are taken out of the containers if they belong to the church and everything is put back on the shelf in an orderly way. If a group in the church could use your flowers, or if you know someone who would enjoy them (sick, elderly, shut-ins, etc.), it would be a lovely gesture on your part to share them. PLEASE NOTE: In case you have a tall arrangement, the cross on the altar may be elevated with blocks of wood. These blocks are stored in the flower room. Just be sure the cross is visible. The candleholders are movable, so you can move them a little to the right, left, forward, or back if it will improve your flower settings. Please notify the church office by Thursday if flowers will be shared for services after any function, such as weddings, funerals, etc. Please make every effort to keep the flower room neat and clean. 6 Easter Sunday Church How Beautiful! New Member Orientation Pastor Dave will be leading two sessions on new member orientation for those who are interested. If you would like to be received into membership or if you would like to learn more about the United Methodist Church and specifically about Port Edwards U.M.C. community, please contact Pastor Dave at or him at Dates and Times are still to be determined. Our church is participating in a Junk in the Trunk Fundraiser on June 23 rd. Funds raised will benefit Helping Hands Gospel Mission. We re looking for smaller items to sell. 9 We are winding down our year of Sunday School. Our last day will be May 21 st. As we look back we are very thankful for the help and support we received throughout the year. As we look ahead we are being very prayful that some of you will be interested in joining the Education Committee. We can use all the help we can get educating the future adults of our church. Some of our prayers have been answered as we are so very thankful and excited that a few of you signed up to be in our teaching rotation next year. Having different teachers in our Sunday School classroom is a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn from different individuals as well as get to know more of the people in their church family. Anyone who is interested can sign up on the clipboard which will continue to be passed during the church service for the next few weeks. Or you are welcome to contact Tiffany Haddow. We are overjoyed to be starting a Youth Group for our older children. 5:30-8:00PM, Next meeting will be Wednesday May 17th Supper will be provided Open to all youth 6 th 12 th grade Our focus for the youth group will be around the CORE Curriculum. Core (Connect, Own, Reveal, Empower ) is a resource designed to help teenagers discover their true identity, value and worth as God s children and empower them to reach their potential in faithfully following Christ with others. Dig In is a four session study for groups of all sizes that takes teens on the journey of addressing the obstacles they ve experienced in understanding who they are in Christ toward connecting with God and others in new and healthy ways. The first lesson was ( Identity Theft on Wednesday 4/19) Wednesday 5/17 Delete Spam Wednesday 6/21 Connect with God Wednesday 7/19 Connect with Others TBD Summer Fun Outing *Dates are tentative and youth are not required to attend all four sessions. We hope they can make most of them, but understand scheduling conflicts. There is a student journal available to purchase for $9.00. The journal is resource for the journey providing the opportunity for teens to explore what they are learning on a personal level. Please contact Lynn at the office to order your journal. You can provide payment at the meeting.

10 (Continued) Vacation Bible School Due to low attendance the past couple of years we are partnering up with First English Lutheran Church for Vacation Bible School. Last year a couple members from our Education Committee visited First English during their VBS and it was a awesome, fun and educational time for all of the children. We also liked that the older children in their church were part of the VBS team of teachers and helpers. The younger children enjoyed the older children very much! VBS will be held at First English Lutheran Church, 440 Garfield St., Wisconsin Rapids, July th Sunday-Thursday from 5:30PM to 8:00PM. Monday Thursday a sack lunch will be offered at no charge from 4:45PM to 5:15PM. The Theme is Barnyard Round-Up. Any children 3 years old through 6 th grade are invited to join us for this wonderful event!! Noisy Collection A BIG thank you to all who contributed to our Noisy Collections. We are well on our way to raising enough money for our New Sunday School Room Carpet. We could not do this without your generosity! A very big thank you to the Nurture Committee for their donation!!
