4 Congratulations to Deacon Jacob Rouse one of our parishioners who was ordained a Catholic Deacon for the Archdiocese of Dubuque. Jacob was ordained on Friday Night at 7:00 p.m. at St. Raphael Cathedral in Dubuque. Jacob will still have another year of seminary training at Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein, Illinois. He will return to the Archdiocese to be ordained to the Priesthood on May 26, Please keep Jacob in your prayers. Archbishop Jackels opened the diaconate ordination celebration by welcoming the parents, families and friends of the candidates before beginning the Rite of Ordination, which is rich with meaning and symbolism. The ordination ceremony starts-out like every Mass. There is the opening prayer and the usual Mass readings. After the Gospel came the Election of the Candidates, whereby each candidate is formally chosen for ordination and becomes referred to as the elect. Father Schatz, diocesan vocation director, presented each candidate to Archbishop Jackels. Father Schatz testified to the worthiness of each candidate, after which Archbishop Jackels formally accepted the men to be ordained as deacon. The Archbishop then preached a homily about how the role of a deacon is to assist the bishop and priests in divine worship, prepare the Eucharistic Sacrifice and distribute the Lord s Body and Blood to the faithful. Secondly, the deacon proclaims Jesus to the people through the Scriptures, baptizing infants and presiding at weddings. After the homily, the elect declared their intentions to assume the responsibility of the office of deacon, and promised celibacy, as well as obedience and respect to Archbishop Jackels and his successors. During the Litany of Supplication, the candidates lay prostrate on the sanctuary floor of the cathedral while the intercession of the saints and angels was invoked. After the Litany of Supplication, Archbishop Jackels laid his hands on the head of each elect in accordance with the apostolic tradition and solemnly recited the Prayer of Ordination. Each of the newly ordained was invested with the stole and dalmatic the proper liturgical attire of the diaconate. Archbishop Jackels then handed each man the Book of the Gospels, symbolizing the task of the deacon to proclaim the Gospel in liturgical celebrations and to preach the faith of the Church in word and deed. Archbishop Jackels then bestowed the traditional liturgical gesture known as the fraternal kiss of peace, and thereby welcomed the new deacons into their ministry. The other deacons present also welcomed the newly ordained, and the order of the Mass continued. A reception was held in the Cathedral Center at St. Raphael Cathedral for Jacob Rouse and his classmate, Andrew Upah. It was a celebration to acknowledge their many years of seminary preparation. As wonderful as this celebration was I m sure that Jacob and Andrew are looking forward to their priesthood ordination next year. We congratulate Jacob and his family on this wonderful event in their lives. Let us continue to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. God calls men and women in every age to serve as priests and religious. Please encourage your children and grandchildren to consider this noble call. Sincerely, Sunday Eucharistic Adoration Fr. 5 New to our Religious Education Program this Fall: Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for 3-6 year olds!! Would you like to help your 3-6 yr old enjoy a deeper relationship with God? Catechesis of the Good Shepherd The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori-based approach to the religious formation of children, rooted in Sacred Scripture, Liturgy, and respect for the child's rich relationship with God. Central to CGS is the atrium, a room containing beautiful materials that focus the child's attention on key scripture passages or liturgical moments. Beginning their work in 1954, Dr. Sofia Cavalleti and her co-worker, Gianna Gobbi, developed the catechesis by observing and working with children between the ages of three and twelve. It is the joyful, peaceful response of the children themselves that inspired and determined the content of this unique program. After an introduction by the catechist, the children are invited to work with a material on their own to continue their meditation. Because children learn by using their hands, working with materials allows them to enter more deeply into meditation, nurturing their relationship with God. Course sessions include prayer, presentations of materials, background information, discussion of album pages, and work in the atrium. About the catechists: CGS catechists receive 90+ hours of training before leading a CGS class. Age Requirement: This program is for children between ages of three and six. When are classes: Wednesday evenings beginning September 13 from 6:00-7:30pm Thursday mornings beginning September 14 from 9:30-11:00am Contact info: If you would like your child(ren) to experience their faith through this hands-on approach, please contact Geralyn Ward, DRE, or gward@stpatrickscr.org Read More: To read more about Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, you can visit their website at: CGS registration for parishioners begin May 19 Registration for non-parishioners begin June 2 Tuition must be paid in full to secure your child s registration.
