2 FROM PASTOR DAVID... David Trawick Senior Pastor Sometimes conversations between business people open with the question, How s business? That depends on a prior question: What is our business? Before we can answer the question of how is the church s business, we have to ask: What is the business of the church? Is our business to get people in the pews, people in Sunday school classes, money in the offering plate? Those are things we measure. I have to make weekly attendance reports online, and the Finance Committee has to track our finances. But is that our business? Jesus told his followers to make disciples, baptizing them, and teaching them to obey all I taught. (Mt.28:19-20) The stated mission of the United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Nowhere did Jesus order that we fill pews, Sunday school classes, or offering plates. Pews, classes, and offering plates are supposed to be means to an end, the methods by which we try to fulfill our call. The end goal is the making of fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ, who then make a difference in the world. So how is business? You can help us gauge how our business is doing by sharing your stories of life-change. Oh, I know some stories. But there are many stories I ve not heard, and I d like to hear yours. So please, do me a favor. Think about the phrases at the top of our web page and worship bulletin: Worship, Building Up, Reaching Out. Consider these questions: How has worship changed your head, your heart, your hands and feet? Has your heart been stirred to deeper love for God by music or in prayer? When and how have you experienced God moving to build you up? Have you been challenged by a passage of Scripture? Held accountable by a brother or sister in Christ? How has God called and empowered you to reach out with the love of Christ, expressed in words and/or deeds, to those outside of NWH? Did someone invite you to serve and you discovered fruitfulness and fulfillment? Did you have a conversation with someone outside the church that led to discussion of spiritual matters? Have you been changed by participation in a mission trip or a Reach Out Day? I d appreciate it if you d me your stories. I d like to hear how business is! (And, if you wish, I could omit names and identifying details if I mention your story in my August sermon series, where I ll be providing a picture of what Northwest Hills is all about.) REACH OUT DAY JUNE 18: Always wondered about helping with Texas Ramp Project? This would be a great opportunity to give it a try! No special skills or tools required. Bring your willing hands and spirit, get on the spot training, meet some great people and make a difference for someone who needs access in and out of their home. Work from 8 a.m. to about noon. Taking it to the Streets is an amazing ministry to the homeless. Join us and those downtown and serve a warm dinner to those living on the street. 3 STEWARDSHIP: FREE WILL Robert Lindberg Stewardship Chair Is your life empty? Maybe half full, half empty? Maybe you are at something more or less than half/half? From the time we are conceived to the time we pass, there are responsibilities. Upon birth, we are responsible for eating and our bodily functions. As we grow, hopefully in Christ, temptations will be ever present. It can be that toy the neighbor has that you don t or the so called friend encouraging you to steal a bag of candy at the grocery store. Every day we have responsibilities and temptations. Amazing we have Freewill. No other creature on the earth has freewill. For the most part, we get to choose how we look, think, act, and interact. What attitude are you picking today: being a blessing to others and oneself or woes? Are you taking care of yourself physically, emotionally, intellectually, socially, financially, vocationally, and spiritually? As we go through life are we saying prayers or are we cussing. I know my stress level is substantially reduced when saying prayers. At the end of the day, the choices we make may give pleasure, but at what accountable cost? Have you ever felt as if a piece of your soul was torn from you? I know I have and boy does being accountable in front of God scare me. It s a good thing that through our faith we have hope because of God s love. It s a good thing Jesus died for our sins and through him only can we be forgiven, saved, and provided eternal life. 4 TEAM JESUS ON THE MOVE! Kelly Voorhies Volunteer & Mission Coordinator Malawi, Africa July 20-August 6, 2016 Our 3rd adult mission team to go will be partnering with Abundant Life Center in Malawi. This will be our third time to Malawi and second time to work with ALC. Many of you will recall our visit from Moses. He is the director of ALC. Since our time there last year, ALC has grown and duplicated into 3 more communities serving many villages and feeding thousands of children. This would not be possible if Team Jesus had not stepped up. I m so glad it was Team Jesus through NW Hills! We have a group of 7 going this year. We will be offering sewing skills for the widows and women, teacher training, pastors and spouses training, chiefs and their spouses training, girl empowerment, showing the Jesus film again in a new community, door to door prayer and evangelism, and more. As with any mission, we request your prayer support. We also invite you to help with supply costs and donations. Please see the included list and make a donation if possible. Make checks payable to NW Hills and designate Malawi. You may specify your donation to a specific need (such as Bibles, blankets, DFG kits) and it will be utilized for that purpose first; however, any excess for that need will then be applied to the other supply and ministry needs. 5 THE WAY YOUTH WORK CAMP July Chris Baxter Youth Minister This year, the Way Youth Ministry is combining its Mt. Wesley Mission Trip with summer camp. The 2016 Way Youth Work Camp will take place July at Mt. Wesley in Kerrville. Cost is $140 for two trips in one. Eligible youth are incoming 6 th graders through 2016 high school graduates. The trip will start off exactly like a Mt. Wesley Mission Trip. We will unload our gear the first day and immediately get to work. The next two days will follow the same schedule with swimming, movies and other evening activities included. The last day, when we would normally pack up and head back home, we will instead begin recreation time and transition into summer camp. Camp will follow the same basic schedule as in years past with worship, teaching, small groups, big games, messy games, etc., except there will be air conditioning and Mt. Wesley meals. CHILDREN S MINISTRY Natalie Long Children s Minister Highland Lakes Children s Summer Camp Make plans now for your children to attend Highland Lakes Summer Camp. Last year, we took 24 children and 13 adults and had a blast! We grew closer in our walk with Christ while engaging in activities such as water sports, archery, worship, crafts, engaging lessons, sports, gaga ball and much more! There are two sessions designed with the age of your child in mind. Children entering 2 nd -4 th grade- July 29 th - 30 th $80 registration deadline - June 15 th Children entering 4 th -6 th grade- July 25 th - 28 th $210 - registration deadline June 15 th SPARES & PAIRS PANIC ROOM! Saturday, June 11, If you are in the 30's - 40's age range, a "spare" or a "pair"; we would like to invite you to join us for a "night out". Our goal is to create friendships with those in a similar stage of life and just have some good fun! Saturday, June 11: We will meet at the church at 4:45 pm (subject to change, watch the bulletin for updates). We will be reserving a room at San Antonio's only PANIC ROOM! That's right! We will be locked in a room for 60 minutes; we will need to work together to solve a series of clues in order to escape! This is not a haunted house! The cost will be $20/person and space is limited! Kid's Camp Scholarship Burgers Our kids, with adult help, will be working hard to make to-go style, freshly grilled hamburger lunches, complete with potato chips, a pickle and cookies all for just $5. We will be taking preorders on Sunday, June 12 and June 19. The lunches will be available for pick up outside the foyer on Sunday, June 26. All of the profits will be going towards kid's camp cost! Class 101 is required before becoming a member of Northwest Hills. Class is led by Pastor David Trawick. AGING PARENT SUPPORT GROUP Sunday, June 12, 3 pm, Library If you are taking care of an aging parent, this is a great support group. A dad is someone who wants to catch you before you fall but instead picks you up, brushes you off, and lets you try again. A dad is someone who wants to keep you from making mistakes but instead lets you find your own way, even though his heart breaks in silence when you get hurt. A dad is someone who holds you when you cry, scolds you when you break the rules, shines with pride when you succeed, and has faith in you even when you fail.
