4 PAGE 4 Lenten Worship 2016 I hope that our Worship themed services were meaningful to you as we passed from Christmas into Epiphany to Lent. God is a giving God who showers our lives with gifts of peace (the baby lying in a manger), hope, forgiveness, joy, community (the gift of protection, safety), love, home (the gift of relationship with God and one another), and Jesus (the gift of communion, and the gift of power in our lives to transform the lives of others around us). Each morning as I tied one of my bow ties I was reminded of these great gifts. It warmed my heart! Were You there? Love That Stirs What s next is our Lenten/Easter series, Were You There: Love that Stirs. We pastors will be creating first person sermons to help immerse us in this great story of Jesus. I hope that we don t learn facts about these days in Jesus life. I hope that we will feel the stories. As we feel the stories we may be changed, transformed to grow in love of God, love of each other, and love for people in the community around us. Here is what is to come in John s Gospel: March 6: The Crowd, John 18: Jesus healed and taught individuals. Jesus also healed and taught crowds. March 13: Pontius Pilate, John 19:1-16. Who really has power? Is it Pilate with all his armed soldiers and police? Or Jesus whose kingdom is not from this world? March 20: The Soldier, John 19: He was sent on a mission to confirm that Jesus was truly dead. He pierced his spear into the side of Jesus and there flowed forth water and blood. The soldier was changed to never by the same again but became a witness to the events of God. March 24, Maundy Thursday, John 13:1-20. Jesus washes the feet of the disciples and expresses his deep love for his disciples. Worship service is at 7:00pm. March 25, Good Friday, Jesus, John 18:1 19:42 Jesus goes to the cross. ELCA combined worship service is at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at 12:00pm, worship service at 7:00pm at Good Shepherd. March 27, Easter Sunday, Mary, John 20:1-18. Mary mistakes the Living Lord for the gardener. Worship services are at 6:30, 8:30, and 10:45am. April 3: Thomas, John 20:19-31: Thomas amazed at the living Lord proclaims Jesus My Lord and my God! April 10: Our new community, John 10:1-18: We the sheep of Jesus are empowered to live, and love one another. Liesl Hovel from Lutheran Social Services will be our guest that day! April 17: Peter, John 21:1-19: Jesus recently raised from the dead comes to raise his disciples to new life. Jesus was very definitely human but he was so much more than that as his words attest. The Gospel of John collects several sayings by Jesus known as his I am statements. This Lent each I am statement is picked up by one of our ELCA pastors from Bethlehem, Zion and Good Shepherd. Come and hear a different I am statement each week. Following the evening service we will have a Faith and Life message from guest speakers coming to talk with our confirmation students, and you are welcome too! Each talk runs from 7:00 to 7:30. Caramel Rolls WELCA thanks all who purchased Caramel Rolls on Valentine's Day! We will have another sale with double the Caramel Rolls, weather permitting, on April 24th, the last Sunday in April! Come ready to eat fresh rolls!

5 Prayer Vigil PAGE 5 We will be having our third Good Friday prayer vigil. Congregation members are encouraged to sign up for a time slot to pray from 8:00am on Friday morning through 8:00am on Saturday morning. Youth from 8 th -12 th grade are invited to stay all night with us. They will experience prayer stations and different activities throughout the night. Sign up sheets will be available on the Welcome Desk. Newlywed Game/Easter Breakfast On February 11 our boards came together in staggered meetings which simplifies our calendar of board meetings taking place throughout the month to bringing us together like a monthly board retreat. Here we can communicate with one another. It also simplifies the schedule for Pastor Tim and Pastor Liz. A week later we come together at church council to move our dreams and plans forward. What s next? Many of our boards will meet again on March 10. For the second year in a row Fred and Rachel Hemke came out on top of our Newlywed Game! All of our couples did amazing. Thank you to Joe and Amanda Black, Chad and Amy Nilson and Simon and Sydna Odland and Pastor Tim and Nancy Sersen for participating. This was a fun evening full of laughter and a great way to support our youth. What s next? Our youth will be providing a Easter Breakfast for our next fundraiser. They will be serving the breakfast from 7:30am-10:30am on March 27 th. Please look out for our board to help donate items to the breakfast as well as youth please sign up to help! 7 PAGE 7 Campus Ministry - Collegians In Christ s Service (CICS) at Northern State University Ashley Geist-Cusick, Director Greetings from Northern State! It has been a year filled with many blessings here at NSU and I am honored to share some of the highlights from our year with you below. Our Service Learning trip to Texas was again, a highlight of our year. The trip included nine student members and two leaders serving at the Bokencamp Children s Shelter for unaccompanied migrant youth from Central and South America. Our group had the opportunity to share in praise music, crafts, Bible stories, and praying with these amazing youth. We also learned a great deal about immigration and had the opportunity to provide encouragement and support to the staff at the Bokencamp shelter. We also served at the Food Bank of South Texas by packing food boxes and at Metro Ministries by helping clean in their medical clinic, organizing donations, cleaning and organizing in the women s shelter, and conducting an evening of crafts and Bible stories at the shelter for women and children. Every one of our participants also led devotions during the trip. Above: Students at the Bokencamp Shelter: Cody Folden, Alicia Lorig, Brandon Vockrodt, Olivia Forman, Cody Klein, Megan Vockrodt, and Charles Sersen. Above Right: Brandon Vockrodt of Pierre visits the Gulf of Mexico at Malaquite Beach, National Park. While in Texas the students also visited several learning locations including the USS Lexington Museum on the Bay, the Art Museum of South Texas, the Texas State Aquarium, and Malaquite Beach National Park. Each student who has been on these trips has said that they are life changing! We thank our supporters including all of our local personal donors & ELCA congregations, Support to Ministries and the Northern Plains Conference for making these trips a reality for our NSU students. These learning experiences would not be possible without the generosity of many, and we are thankful for this support. Other Highlights Include.. -Celebrating the graduations of nine senior members. -Winning the NSU award for Service Project of the Year for the third year in a row and were nominated for outstanding senior, outstanding student leader, outstanding freshman, outstanding advisor, and outstanding program. -10 of our students plus our leader attending the Peer Ministry Training workshop with Lyle Gienger presented at Bethlehem Lutheran in October. - Donating over 52 hours of service to the Aberdeen community between our Fall Food Drive and the Christmas Day of Service which included Christmas caroling at nursing homes, making blankets, and more, all in one day. -Conducting a campus wide donation for toiletry items for our local women s shelter this Christmas. -Worshipping, learning & having fun with Wednesday worship, three Bible Studies per week, and a fun social event on most Fridays. We have also welcomed four faculty & staff guest speakers from the NSU community at our weekly services and many of our local ELCA pastors. -Collaborating with other NSU ministries for a welcome back picnic in the fall and a Christian music night on campus. Coming up at CICS. We would like to extend a special invitation to join us at this year s Gala on Saturday, March 19 th. Tickets will be available in our local ELCA church offices or by calling Ashley at Tickets must be purchased in advance. All proceeds will go towards this Spring s Service Learning Trip to Washington D.C. which will focus on hunger and homeless children in our Nation s Capitol. At Lower Left: CICS group photo of students attending the Annual Celebration Gala in The gala will include conversation between students, board members, parents and donors, a slideshow presentation of the year s activities, recognition of our graduating seniors, a silent auction, and an evening of fellowship complete with dinner and live music. Funds raised at the gala will be used to defray expenses for our Service Learning trip in May to Washington, D.C.

It is wonderful to be a part of a loving and caring church. We felt the thoughts and prayers of everyone at Good Shepherd and for that we are most grateful. Last September, Wes and I were on a cruise to Alaska when I was stricken with seizures and what first appeared to the ship's doctor to be a stroke. After a CT scan at a hospital in Anchorage, it was diagnosed as a brain lesion or tumor. It later was found to be a hematoma the size of a hen's egg. We flew home and went to Mayo Clinic. As the blood dissipated, I improved, but heavy doses of steroids had affected my mobility, so extensive therapy was required. Thank you to everyone for your cards, thoughts, and prayers as we felt the hand of God touching us during the recovery. I am home and mostly recovered. Daylight Saving Time begins on March 13th. Remember to turn your clocks ahead an hour. Arlene Elliott
