5 The End of Shame: The Cross PAGE 5 Life can be difficult! For example, when you fail at something and others hold it over you or you discover that you re the subject of gossip or a person who you work with, or care about, simply dismisses you. Your opinion isn t given the light of day. A family member or close friend cuts off a relationship with you. It would be so nice to get a little forgiveness, a little grace, but all that you can feel is the weight of disgrace. There s someone that is here for you. There are people who are the followers of Jesus, who have been set free from shame because of the cross. That s who we are! The cross was about more than the forgiveness of sins. This cross was a cataclysmic event that changed the world forever. Our relationship to God and one another has been changed beyond anything that would have been recognizable before. The old system, in which some were worthy and others less worthy, some were honored while others were shamed, has been turned upside down by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. There is power and authority in our worship services this lent because we are claiming, right out loud, the victory from the cross over our shame, all of it! We are claiming that it was more than our sins being forgiven from the cross. You and I are raised up to honor in this community of the crucified savior. We might be ashamed because of our past. We might feel humiliated because of our age, our looks, our physical fitness, our ability to remember things clearly or other shortcomings. We might be carrying with us hurtful words spoken to us by another or insensitive and unkind words written on Facebook for all to see. But from the cross Jesus lifts us up and honors us. This is a message worth getting out of bed for, and coming for a Sunday celebration that claims our honor as a pronouncement from Jesus Christ himself. These divine words that claim us for who we are in God s sight, are a powerful antidote to the lies that have been spoken about us. This is because the world hasn t only tried to discredit us, the world threw everything they had at Jesus to shame him. On the cross all of that shame was defeated forever. Living Spiritually It s just another day, or is it? The hours pass from our getting up in the morning to our going to bed at night. For some of those hours we are bound by promises and commitments. Other hours off more freedom and belong to us. Some hours are weighed down by weariness and toil. Other hours are filled with freedom and light but In all of our hours God is with us offering special graces. The gifts at the start of a new day are different from graces that come at the close of the day. We experience light and darkness. We have times when we are pulsing with energy and times when just putting one foot ahead of another is a chore. The Spiritual Direction small group is a place of peace and encouragement. Our eyes are opened to God s angels that are with us in different ways through a day or week. What a gift it is to become aware of God from moment to moment in all of our days. Come and join us in the chapel on Thursday, March 22, from 7:00-8:30pm as we discover God s presence with us in every hour. No Other Gospel: Adult Sunday School We are meeting Jesus, coming to know who Jesus is for us through the letters of Paul. We meet for our lessons on Sundays in the chapel from 9:40-10:30am every Sunday morning. We are going through all of Paul s letters with an eye towards who Jesus is in our world. In March we dive into Colossians, 1 st Corinthians and 2 nd Corinthians. Paul teaches us that what we do grows out of what we know about God and what we believe Christ is doing in our lives. We don t simply do the right stuff. First we become connected with God who in turn shapes what is important for us to do. You ll get the most out of these classes if you take time to read the lessons ahead of class. You ll get even more out of the classes if you can find a partner or a small group of friends to read and discuss the thoughts and ideas presented by Paul. Even if you don t have a small group, and you don t get around to the reading yourself, you will still benefit from these classes. If you go to the first service, stay one more hour. If you come to the second service come an hour early. You will find things to think about along with encouragement for your life
