Would you rather always shout or always whisper? These are a couple of the questions that families were asked during Family School on February 5 th and 8 th. Read more on page 3. The Church Has Left the Building t-shirts are popping up everywhere! It is great to see our church reaching out to not only our youth but our whole community. Turn to page 3 to find out the events this month! The Holy Spirit gathers us. Gathering is something that I ve learned to never take for granted whether it s two or three gathered for prayer or study, or 400 gathered for a Christmas Eve service. This month is a time to gather. It s time to gather for worship whether it s Sunday morning as we learn that we can walk with God, loved as beloved dust. Read more on page 4. Or we gather on Wednesday nights to grow in The Lord s Prayer, and to hear people from our church and community talk about the gift of faith in life. Read more about that on page 5. We gather to talk about the calling of our church in cottage meetings. Read more about those on page 5. We gather to welcome new members. You can read about that on page 5. It s all the work of the Spirit of God, a Spirit that brings us together and keeps us walking with God.

2 PAGE 2 Little Lambs Preschool Receipts and Labels Maggie Bruns, Director/Teacher February brought us a lot of fun! We had a great time traveling to the dentist and the kids were able to see all the different tools that the dentist uses. The kids also had a fun time celebrating Valentine s Day by having a little party. We are looking forward to a lot of fun things in March! We will be celebrating St. Patrick s Day. **Thank you to all who attended and donated to our Spaghetti Supper! We had a great time singing and eating spaghetti! Keep collecting those receipts from Kessler s or Ken s and the Labels for Education! Receipts and labels for education can be placed in the containers located on the table in the Fellowship Hall. Check out the list of eligible products that qualify for the Labels for Education program located near the bins in the Fellowship Hall. 3 Youth page PAGE 3 Family School/NeSoDak Visit Families had to make choices during an activity at Family church school. They were asked would you rather questions, such as would you rather eat pizza or hot dogs. The activity focused on making choices just like Peter made a choice when he chose to listen to Jesus and walked on water. Every day we make the choice to act like a Christian. Families also learned about praying for things we normally might not think to pray for such as food, clean water, volunteers, and the sound of silence. Family school closed with family members discussing ways to encourage each other when they are sad, upset, or lonely. We are planning a special Family Church school on March 12 th and 22 nd when camp counselors from Lutheran Outdoors will visit Good Shepherd and lead church school. The camp counselors will give the kids and parents a taste of camp and get everyone excited for summer camps! A reminder that anyone registered for a camp with Lutheran Outdoors has to let Amanda Black or Pastor Liz know by or in writing no later than Monday, May 1 in order to receive campership money and/or to use family account funds. To register for a summer camp go to Youth Summer Events Annual Rummage Sale Set Up June 4 th Annual Rummage Sale June 6 th 7 th Confirmation Camp at NeSoDak with Pastor Tim: June Vacation Bible School & Day Camp: June with a kick off potluck dinner on June 18 th First Communion Milestone The fifth graders at Good Shepherd will take part in their First Communion on Maundy Thursday, April 13 th. A formal Seder supper will be served to 5 th graders, their families and special friends. After the meal, fifth graders will receive their First Communion during worship. All 5 th graders and their families are invited to the Seder Supper on Thursday, April 13th at 5:15pm with Maundy Thursday worship to follow at 7pm. Families are asked to contact Amanda Black or Barb Daberkow at to RSVP for the Seder Supper. Tickets are $8.50 per person, children ages 5 and under are free. It is a tradition that 6th Graders and their families help prepare and serve this meal on April 12 th and 13 th. More information will be sent out soon about this important milestone. Youth Acolytes Twelve 4 th graders attended acolyte training on January 15 th and 18 th. These young ladies and gentlemen have been doing an excellent job helping out congregation with worship. We thank all of our youth that have been assisting as acolytes and in other areas of worship. Anyone who is in the 4 th grade through 10th grade is invited to help during worship as an acolyte. Youth are always welcome to assist during the services as ushers, readers, greeters, and with communion. Please contact Pastor Liz, Pastor Tim or Amanda Black if your child would like to help during a service! 4 PAGE 4 Series: Beloved Dust When it comes to prayer we should settle for nothing less than a life lived with God. Lent begins with the sobering Ash Wednesday words, You are dust and to dust you shall return. We are beloved dust, dust loved by God. That means everything changes, everything is made new. We ve planned a spiritual worship series that is developed from the book Beloved Dust// Drawing Close to God by Discovering the Truth about Yourself. Here s what to expect. Wednesday, March 5: Scripture Matthew 4:1-11. I Am Dust, Now Everything Changes. True, we are mortal and we are dying even as we live. But in God, Jesus becomes dust for us! That is not only a promise. Christ becoming human becomes the reality that changes our prayer by putting life into our prayer. Now prayer ushers us into the place where healings happen, where there is a party going on, where forgiveness is discovered and lived, and where we are joined together. Sunday, March 12: Scripture John 3:1-17. Called to be with God: Connection beyond Pretending. Discover the art of the Sabbath rest. We often live driven lives. When we do rest we seek rest in escape. Actually rest is not about escape but about connection. When God rests, God doesn t check out or desert us. God rests, right here, in this creation. We were created for life with God and in our rest we rest with God. We are renewed to be connected to one another and God. Sunday, March 19: Scripture John 4:5-42. Hiding in the Dust: About Sin. To prove that we are good people and worthy of love, we devise countless ways to be self-righteous. We try to ground our reality on anything other than God. When Adam and Eve sinned, they were filled with shame as they realized their nakedness. God comes down and dresses them, and in that act, rehumanizes them. We might use prayer to show that we are holy people and hide who we really are. But prayer is not a place to hide, but a place to abide. Sunday, March 26: Scripture John 9:1-41. Stuck in the Sands of Time. We are ever aware of the passage of time and think that we can manage time to change the world around us. But time management can become a form of idolatry. When we wait, when our lives slow down to walk with God instead of fly through our tasks aiming at difficult goals, do we feel like we are wasting time? Or can we accept what it is to live with God in time? We know what it feels like when things aren t working out. We know the fear of failure. Our prayer may turn frantic, What s wrong with me? Why aren t I enough? What is plan B? But those are the wrong questions. The question that can lead to a new, liberating experience of prayer is What s God doing in this mess? Where is Jesus in this life around me? What is the Holy Spirit Guiding me to live? Sunday, April 2: Scripture John 11:1-15. Unlimited Limitation. Jesus, the Resurrection and the Life comes to Lazarus to bring him out of the tomb alive! This same Jesus comes down to us finite, weak and broken people. God comes down, we don t go up! Technology is often misplaced hope to transcend our limitations. But then we re surprised by our frailty. Paul proclaims promise to us in 2 Corinthians 12:9, My grace is sufficient for you. My power is made whole in weakness. In our prayer we are connected relationally to God who keeps lifting us up out of the dust. Sunday, April 9: Scripture Matthew 21:1-17. Jesus and the Cross: Triumphant and Riding on a Donkey. The temple was the place that people went to to be with God. Now Jesus enters our lives and we are formed together into the spiritual temple that is made not with hands. In prayer everything that comes out from our hearts, in the presence of God, is an invitation to be known by God. Prayer can be difficult when we try to work our way into God s presence. Every emotion, task, relationship, and event in life is an invitation to be with the Lord. Jesus enters Jerusalem on a donkey. Jesus enters into the temple of our lives today. Maundy Thursday, April 13: Scripture John 13:1-17, 31b-35. Love and Service: Wash One Another s Feet. Jesus time was growing short and he was preparing them for life after he would go away from them.. Our service to one another itself is founded in prayer. We serve, we pray, we hold together. This is not about fixing another person. This is a time of simple trust as we pray humbly and profoundly with Jesus, Not my will but your will be done. Good Friday, April 14: Scripture John 18:1 19:42. The Cross, Suffering and Death. Our prayers rest on the intercessions of Jesus. As Jesus moves to the cross, we come to a time of silence before God. In this silence we are weak. There is love in this weakness. There is hurt, frustration and anger as we witness this unjust suffering and death and in this event we see suffering and death continue in our lives and the world around us. Our prayer is sitting silently with God by entering into God s rest. In prayer we follow Christ s example. We lay down all we have to rest in Christ and his prayers on our behalf. We wait for God s next word. Sunday, April 16, Easter. Scripture John 20:1-18. Resurrection. Christ is alive and appears to Mary Magdalen and also to us. God creates our new community by giving us his presence in abundance. The resurrection brings us to the presence of God. We are filled with hope that overflows in love as our prayers express the language of thanksgiving. This is the fullest picture that we have of joy! We find him standing outside of the tomb. He is alive and he is calling out our names!

5 Wednesday Lenten Services 2017 PAGE 5 Ash Wednesday is March 1. We will have a service of Ashes on that night at 7:00pm. This service is an opportunity for us as a church, and as individuals, to reflect on our lives of love to God. We are invited to lives of repentance, performing acts of kindness, prayer, and fasting. We examine our own lives and measure how we are living when it comes to prayer, study of scripture and faith, worship, acts of encouragement and invitation to others, serving, giving, practicing forgiveness, and awareness of gratitude leading us to praise. Ash Wednesday gives us opportunity of private confession as we think of the places where our lives are stuck in sin. After reviewing our own lives, we make a public confession. You are encouraged to make private confession as well during this season. Select a friend who is encouraging toward you, or come and see Pastor Liz or Pastor Tim. This season of Lent is an opportunity to grow in love. After our confession on Ash Wednesday, we will place ashes on our foreheads, a reminder of our mortality and our need of God. There will be no communion that night. Instead we will renew our confession in the Lenten services to follow. On Maundy Thursday we will celebrate our faith journey with words of forgiveness and acceptance from God and joyfully receive Holy Communion. Lenten services will be at 6:20 each Wednesday beginning March 8. Area pastors will visit us and lead us in growing more deeply into the Lord s Prayer. You may leave after that service or stay as a variety of speakers will talk to our confirmation students about the gift of faith in our lives. These half hour talks are not limited to confirmation students alone, you are all invited and encouraged to attend these half hour talks. Our speakers this year are John Papendick, Wende Lewis, Derik Budig (director of the Aberdeen Y.M.C.A.) and MJ Johnson. These talks, begun last year, were memorable. People continued comment and talk about them for months afterward. There will be no talk on March 15, because it is Spring Break. Collegians in Christ s Service Annual Celebration Collegians in Christ s Service Annual Celebration is April 1 st It s no joke! Collegians in Christ s Service (CICS) is the Lutheran Campus ministry group at Northern State University. They are a group of students that meet weekly for worship and fun. They are holding their Annual Celebration Dinner and Dance on April 1 st at the Ramkota Hotel in Aberdeen. The silent auction begins at 5:30pm with dinner and dance to follow. Tickets are $35 a person or $250 for a table of 8. If you would like to purchase tickets, students from CICS will be in worship on March 19 th or you can talk to Pastor Liz. We are planning a series of Cottage Meetings through These meetings will provide opportunity for open discussion what people are feeling and experiencing at Good Shepherd. What about the church is important to you and what makes that possible? Where is Jesus active in our church? What are we doing well and what could we be doing better? How do we continue to reach out into a changing community and world? You will receive an invitation to a gathering. You will be invited to RSVP so we can have a good group at each meeting. We will gather in family homes for refreshment, conversation and prayer. Watch for your invitation to come. If you re eager, give us a call to get you invited earlier in the year.

7 PAGE 7 WELCA NEWS and NOTES Mother, Daughter, Friend Salad Luncheon will be held on Sunday, April 30 th at 2:00pm at Good Shepherd s Fellowship Hall. All women of the church and their daughters, mothers and friends are invited! We will be looking for a dozen women to host a table. The hostess will choose a theme (a book, a holiday, a party, a cartoon character use your imagination) and be responsible for setting a table for 8 using that theme. Paper plates may be used or if you prefer, dishes. Please have a centerpiece for your table (it can be something pretty, a stuffed animal, paper art, a cowboy hat, something silly, anything that fits your theme ). We will have tablecloths available, unless you want to bring your own. Please call me with your theme, so we don t double up! Closer to the event we will be asking for volunteers to bring salads or desserts. We have a speaker or two in mind, but will welcome your thoughts. Do you know someone who would be educational, funny or otherwise entertaining? Call Sharon Bossert / with questions, comments, speaker ideas Tickets will be $5.00 each with all profits going to Missions. Mark your calendars now for a FUN, FELLOWSHIP TIME!!! The WELCA Spring Gathering will be on April 22nd (storm date April 29) at Trinity in Mobridge. Call Sharon Bossert at by April 16th if you want to ride along! Cost is $12.00 which includes lunch. In service and fellowship, Sharon Bossert, President Good Shepherd Women of the ELCA New Member Sundays The first Sunday of every month will be new member Sunday. This means our next opportunity for new members will be April 2. The next one after that will be May 7. This allows flexibility. If a person is unavailable to join the church on one date there is always another date coming. We will also offer classes that explore the range of possibilities of being a Christian built on a Lutheran foundation. These classes will take place approximately one week ahead of the new member Sunday. New members will also be welcomed into the congregation for our Wednesday evening service as well as Sunday. SHARING YOUR BLESSINGS As you ponder the enclosed Time and Talent signup, please prayerfully consider how God has blessed you with time and with unique abilities that are meant to be used and shared. AND, serving side by side with other members of Good Shepherd, you will meet some wonderful people! He said that a budget was a moral document that defined our identity. He worked as president to cut out those things that confused and spread out our identity. After reading his biography I will never look at budgets in the same way again. Sometimes budgets become glorified wish lists. We include too much in place of asking the important questions of who we are and what our goals are. This year we are working to cut down our budget, not only to make it affordable, but also to focus on what we are called to do. As I write this our last completed month is January. We need almost $10,000 a week to meet the budget. In January we were at that magical $40,000. Thank you so much for your part in helping us to reach this goal. In January we were giving the funds to meet our payroll, send benevolences out to the South Dakota Synod, visit with the sick and shut ins, have a presence at community events, and provide education and growth for youth and adults. I am grateful for you faithfulness. Pastor Tim Library News This month we would like to bring to your attention to books written by Karen Kingsbury. The church library has several sets of series that she has written like the 9/11 series that includes One Tuesday Morning and Beyond Tuesday Morning (both are in the library). She also has written many stand-alone books. Unlocked is one of them. This books deals with a child who has autism. He was a normal happy child until he was three and then he began to change. He was diagnosed with autism noncommunicative. He is now eighteen and in high school in a special needs program. It deals with how other kids react to him, how he is bullied because he is different, and the positive results when he connects with a childhood friend and a musical drama. This is not a true story but is based on a child that Karen Kingsbury encountered. We thoroughly recommend this book as a must read.
