THE SHAMR CK St. Patrick Parish, Providence June 2011 Dear St. Patrick-Providence Parish Family, I give praise and thanks to almighty God for the gift of the earth. Praise God!!! Well, the farmers have finally been able to get in the fields. Thank you Lord for the break in the rains, now can we put our order for some rain in July and August. Just inquiring? June is normally filled with graduations and parties. Congratulations to all our graduates, may your future be filled with success and fulfillment. God go with you! June 11/12, we celebrate the solemnity of Pentecost, the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the church. The Sprit was sent to unify the church and give it courage and strength to face the troubles of life. The gift of the Spirit is unity and peace. May the Holy Spirit continue to guide the church today. Come, Holy Spirit, Come! On June 11, 1977, at Holy Rosary Cathedral in Toledo, Bishop John Donovan laid his hands upon my head while calling on the Holy Spirit and ordained me as a priest of the Church in the Diocese of Toledo. It doesn t seem like 34 years have passed since that date.( I do though see more gray hair on the figure in the mirror-in fact I don t see the black anymore.) It was the fulfillment of my lifelong dream, yet, it was only the beginning of a life in which I have been blessed in so many ways. The many memories over the years are such precious gifts for me. I have been able to be part of so many families on various occasions of joy and sorrow. I thank you for the opportunity to minister among you. June 18/19, besides celebrating the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, we celebrate FATHER S DAY. Yeah, thanks to our dads who have guided us along life and given us big shoes to fill. Thanks Dads!! God bless dads, living and deceased! On Saturday June 25 th, three young men will be ordained priests for the Diocese of Toledo: Michael P. Roemmele from St. Rose-Perrysburg, Jerome A. Schetter from Holy Rosary-St. Mary s, Ohio, and Philip A. Smith from St. Joseph-Tiffin. We thank God for calling these men to serve the church as priests. Please keep them in your prayers. June 25/26 we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Such a precious gift. I will be reviving St. Patrick s Providence pastoral council this summer/ early fall. In May 2010 we were to elect a new pastoral council because the terms of office for the then council was expiring. I was a little taken back and preoccupied with the twining of St. Louis-Custar and St. Patrick-Providence and was disappointed that few nominations were submitted and the majority came from one parishioner, thus I just dropped it and went on. After a year of not having a council to bounce off ideas and to solicit issues and ideas, I am determined to resurrect this important advisory board. More will be forthcoming in future bulletin inserts and Shamrock articles. Peace & Prayers

Offertory Procession Anyone is welcome anytime to bring our gifts of bread, wine and collection basket to the altar. The ushers, who do the asking, would appreciate your volunteering to them before any Mass. There is a sign-up sheet in the vestibule of the church. Coffee/rolls We will not be having coffee and rolls after the 11:00 Mass until the Sunday after Labor Day. We are grateful to Ruth Guyer (& her 11:00 helpers) during the past 9 months. And, we remain very grateful to Pat and Bob Weimer (& their helpers) who will continue to serve us each week after the 8:00 Mass. Coffee/rolls opportunities are a wonderful experience for all of us. Father s Day June 19 Fathers may this day be a happy one for you. May you hear I love you and thanks for everything you do for our family not only today but every day. May you be strong enough and self-assured enough to be vulnerable, affectionate and continually nurturing to each family member. May your children know how much you love their mother. May you pray daily with your family and by your example show them the vital importance of weekly worship. You are probably a quiet heroic figure. May God bless your inner goodness! And may all of us recognize the multi-faceted gift our own father has been to us.
Diocese of Toledo Centenary Award for Outstanding service: This year as part of our diocesan centenary celebration, Bishop Blair has asked pastors, religious superiors, and heads of catholic organizations to nominate individual/couple for a Centenary Award for Outstanding Service to the church. Nominees should demonstrate the presence of Jesus in their lives and have participated in an exceptional service to the church reflected in so many different ways in their lives. It is difficult to just nominate one, but that was the task. Our parish has many who have stepped up to the plate and given generosity to our parish family is so many ways. Thus after several inquiries and consulting, I nominated Chuck & Brenda Krukowski. The bishop has approved my nomination. This Sunday June 12 th at 5:00p.m. at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral-Toledo, Chuck & Brenda will be presented their award along with those from all the diocesan parishes. The evening will have vespers, benediction, and the conferral of the awards. Thanks Chuck & Brenda for your willing service to our parish family. God Bless You! Fr. Dave Annual Catholic Appeal Update: As of June 2 nd, Saint Patrick-Providence have had 25 individuals/families respond to this annual appeal. They have pledged/paid $2, for 25.5% of our goal ($9,848.00) Please consider a donation to the 2011 Annual Catholic Appeal. Brochures, envelopes, and prayer cards available in parish hall and main doors of church. God Bless You! Fr. Dave St. Louis 300 Club: Winners for Sunday June 5 th are: #007 Helen Zbierajewski St. Pat s ($200.00), #006 Morgan DeSmith (Custar) ($100.00) and #008 James Wagner (Custar) ($100.00). Thank You! Thank You!!!! My sincere thanks and prayers for your generous outpouring of love for the family that needed help with cremation expenses.once again, St. Patrick came across and gave generously to help folks in need. We collected more than what was needed. Thank you. These are poor economic times, yet people are willing to help when the need is there. Please be aware that we as a parish family are willing to help one another. If a need arises, please don t hesitate to call. Peace & Prayers, Fr. Dave News from Religious Education The religious education hallways are quiet for now. However, soon St. Patrick s will be alive again with children s voices as the Vacation Bible School gets under way. If you haven t already registered, this is an excellent opportunity for your child to continue learning about Jesus in a fun and faith filled way. Look for information in the bulletin. Our upcoming freshman confirmation candidate class - will soon be receiving information on their service hour requirements. Summer is a great time to get a jumpstart on completing this important requirement for Confirmation. The teachers and I are busy evaluating last year and looking at new ways to make our program even better. We welcome any input or comments you, as parents, might wish to contribute. You can always talk with me after mass or contact me here at the parish on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. There are still workbooks on the table in the Religious Education hallway that need to be claimed. I encourage you to pick up your child s workbook. There are family activity pages and lessons that we did not have time to cover. Remember, family/parents are still the primary faith educators of their children. These pages provide easy conversation starters to discussing our Catholic faith. We will be doing a thorough cleaning and reorganizing of the area this summer. So, any books still left by July will need to be recycled. And lastly, please pray for our youth who will be attending the Steubenville Youth Conference June th. Kevin Hertzfeld has done a wonderful job organizing this trip again this year. We have 16 youth who will be attending this spirit filled event. Religious Education Books If you did not take your book home from R.E. please pick it up from the table in the hallway in the R.E. area. IN OUR YEAR OF GRACE (Liturgical Year), Ordinary Time begins June 13. However, our next Lord s Day liturgies will be unique with Pentecost June 12, the Solemnity of the Most Trinity June 19 and the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 26.
A Blessing for Father s Day Blessed are You, Lord and Father of All Life, who has given to us the gift of the father of our family. Today, we honor him, and we thank You for the numerous good things that are ours because of him. His love for us has been a sign of Your divine affection and a sharing in Your holy love. His continuous concern for our needs and welfare is a mirror of Your holy providence. And so, as we honor him, we praise You, Father of all Peoples. Bless him this day with Your strength and holy power that he may continue to be a sign of You, our God, and a priestly parent to our family. May we who have the honor of bearing his family name do so with great pride. May we, the members of his family, assist him in his holy duties as a parent with our respect, our obedience and our deep affection. Bless him, Lord, with happiness and good health, with peace and with good fortune, so that he who has shared of his very life may live forever with You, his God and heavenly Father. This blessing and all graces, we pray, descend upon the father of our family: in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Renew Theology on Tap for young adults in their 20 s & 30 s. June 21 Does It Really Matter?, topic is going beyond the pews to really wrap up the previous sessions. It will be held at Dos Hermanos on South Whelling St. in Oregon. It will begin at 6:15 for food and registration. Speakers will start at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome. Divine Mercy Talk Wed. 5 Solemnity of Pentecost May Pentecost 11 be a great experience for us. May we be animated by the Spirit to deepen our essential actions of a Bible-based parish: evangelization, discipleship and stewardship. At another time we can reflect further on these three basic components of the Bible. For now just a word about those frequently misunderstood words. Evangelization is about sharing of the Good News with others, who hear the word and become disposed by God s grace to accept it. Discipleship occurs, at baptism, people became members of Christ s body and when they make a sustained commitment to live the Christ-life daily. Stewardship according to the Bible, means responsible management of God s freely given gifts; gratitude for these free gifts prompts the receiver to express thanks by serving others. Renewed by the Spirit may St. Pat s be unmistakably a people living and breathing evangelization, discipleship and stewardship. Come Holy Spirit to our parish; help us be a people of integrity, a people fully alive with love, compassion and a zeal to spread the Good News. May we be a parish who accepts our empowerment to set some needed fires in our individual environments. Pray for each other this week. May our hearts be wide open to all the new beginnings and surprises offered us by the Spirit. HAPPY PENTECOST This day the Father of light has enlightened the minds of the disciples by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. May he bless you and give you the gifts of the Spirit forever. May the fire which hovered over the disciples as tongues of flame burn out all evil from your hearts and make them glow with pure light. God inspired speech in different tongues to proclaim one faith. May he strengthen your faith and fulfill your hope to see him face to face. Pentecost 11 With your prayer to the Holy Spirit, please reflect on the following questions and discuss them with others. 1. What does it mean for us to be the People of God? 2. What does this parish need to be doing to build and to be a sign of God s kingdom of truth and life, of holiness and grace, of justice, love and peace? 3. What is needed for our parish to be a sign of Christ s presence in our parish area? 4. What needs to happen in order for our parishioners to experience genuine community? 5. What do we need to do in order to herald the good news of Jesus Christ to our parish area? 6. What needs to happen in order that our parish easily and clearly serve the hungry, the naked, the thirsty, the ill and the imprisoned of our parish area and beyond? 7. How can our parish follow Jesus? What does discipleship mean to our parish? HOLY TRINITY SUNDAY JUNE 19 One God. Three Persons. That s the doctrine. Scholars try to wrap their minds around it. Skeptics try to debunk it. Preachers sometimes try to explain it with illustrations of shamrocks or triangles. Today s liturgy does none of those things. Today the church celebrates God, who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Today we rejoice that such an amazing God loves us. We believe in the God who is, who was and who is to come. We marvel that such a God wants us to be sons and daughters. The Trinity truly is a mystery, in the religious sense of the word. It is not a puzzle to be solved; rather, it is a truth to be embraced in faith. SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY OF CHRIST JUNE 26 Thus, as we celebrate the last of a series of feasts at the end of the Easter season, we sense the cycle beginning over again. Jesus died and rose once for all. But we remember the mystery of our faith over again in the liturgy, each time bringing us closer to that final day when we, too, will drink of the fruit of the vine and drink it new in the reign of God.
Please keep the priests of our diocese in your prayers Enjoy your summer and be safe.
