1 Welcome to St. Jude the Apostle Parish We are a group of people committed to following Jesus. That means we worship him with vigor and joy. That means we encourage prayer in church and throughout life. That means we love people outside the church through generosity, invitation, and compassion. Our hope is that all people will feel loved and welcomed at St. Jude. And once here, we pray that people will meet God and as a result of meeting God, give their lives to Jesus Christ. We want that for you. Come as you are. Check us out, but more importantly, seek the truth of God that can only be known when one knows Jesus.

St. Jude Church is part of the Body of Christ; Christ is our head, leader and guide. We are all parts or members of His body and servants of the Lord. We believe that the Lord has given us, in our time and in this place, the job of sharing His name with others. We re not in this church to just meet our needs; we re here to meet that need.

3 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2018 Help S.V.D.P. provide the very basic dignities of new underwear, socks, bras. Having clean, serviceable underwear is something many of us are lucky enough to take for granted. But for adults and children who are economically challenged or homeless, even those basic garments can be difficult-if not impossible-to obtain. And that makes it hard to feel comfortable or warm or maintain a sense of personal dignity. That's why SVDP is holding Undie Sunday on July 15, 2018 We are collecting new, packaged underwear, socks, longjohns, bras and plain t-shirts in all sizes for all ages and genders. Items donated will be distributed to families who are victims of fire. Please join us in providing the most basic of needs by bringing your donations to St. Jude. Collection boxes will be set up at the doors. Donations can be brought to the church all week or dropped at the office. The deadline is July 15th. Altar Servers Wanted!!! We are now recruiting new Altar Servers; adults and children who have received their First Holy Communion are eligible. The Altar Servers form a very important part of the church and we are enriched through their dedication and service. It is a very important responsibility and requires a sincere commitment. Please only apply to be an Altar server if you can make this commitment. Summer Bible Study with Fr. Fred at St. Anthony s Taunton Starting on Thursday, July 12th Fr. Fred, will be conducting a Summer Bible Study Titled: Mary, A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother. The Study will be conducted at two different times. The times will be at 11:30am and 6:30pm. It is beautifully filmed in the Holy Land. This study is from Ascension Press, and is taught by Dr. Edward Sri. Each session consists of a 25 minute video followed by discussion. The early session will be followed by a light lunch of soup, bread, and dessert. The study is 8 weeks in length and each week we will study a different key text about Mary such as the Annunciation. Welcome to Taunton Father Fred! MASHPEE The 21 st annual FACE Summer Gala to support Catholic school students in the Fall River Diocese is set for Friday, July 13, at the Willowbend Country Club in Mashpee. With a delicious multi-course dinner, a live auction, a mystery raffle and more, an enjoyable evening for all is planned with proceeds going to FACE, the Foundation to Advance Catholic Education. FACE provides need-based scholarships to children attending Catholic schools on Cape Cod and throughout the Fall River Diocese. Boston TV and radio personality Billy Costa, host of NESN s Dining Playbook, will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the Summer Gala. Dennis-resident Gillian Lewis Milligan is serving as chairperson for this year s event. In his letter of invitation, Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha, S.D.V., writes, This is another great opportunity for the generous people of our beloved Fall River Diocese to come together and demonstrate their love and support for Catholic education. He points out that through the generosity of supporters of FACE, the Fall River Diocese has been able to provide scholarships to many children who would otherwise not be able to attend a Catholic school, adding that, the need continues to grow. For ticket information or to find out about sponsorship opportunities, please contact Jane Robin of the FACE Cape Cod office at or janer@dioc-fr.org. Reservations to attend must be made prior to the event. Tickets will not be available at the door. It is that time of year again! Any group wishing to use the hall or church should fill out the forms and return to the office no later than August 1, If there are any conflicting dates, please be advised that the choices will be made in order of priority. The forms are located in the office and are also available through Leo. If there is no form sent in the dates will not be in the book and will be available for other groups. Please contact the office with any questions or stjudesecretary@verizon.net

Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him. Mark 6:3 (NIV) Do you feel welcome when you come to church? I hope so! After all, most of the children here are your friends that you see at school each day. Some of them live in your neighborhood. You probably play together and have much in common with them. Even the adults here today know who you are and they probably know your parents too. Why wouldn't you feel welcome here? Now, let me ask you another question. If Jesus were to walk in today, do you think he would feel welcome? You would probably answer, "Yes," to that question. After all, we all know who Jesus is and all of the wonderful things he has done, but would you be surprised to know that Jesus was not welcome in the Synagogue in his hometown of Nazareth? That is what today's Bible lesson tells us. Jesus had just healed many people and even raised a young girl from the dead as we learned in last week's lesson. He left there and returned to his hometown. As he always did, Jesus went to the synagogue on the Sabbath. He began teaching, and many who were there were amazed at what they heard. They did not know that Jesus had so much wisdom and power. Some of the people in the synagogue began to make fun of Jesus. "Who does he think he is? And where does he get this wisdom and the power to do miracles? Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't he the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Don't his sisters live right here in the same town with us?" They were offended by the teachings of Jesus and refused to believe in him. Jesus responded to those who rejected him by saying, "A prophet is not accepted in his own hometown, among his relatives, on the streets he played in as a child." Not only that, but because of their unbelief, Jesus was unable to do any miracles among them except to place his hands upon a few people and heal them. Jesus was amazed at their unbelief. Jesus told his disciples to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1:8). But just as many in Nazareth rejected Jesus, they would also reject his disciples as well. If you and I tell others about Jesus, they might reject us too. They might say, "Who do they think they are? They are just a bunch of kids." Jesus told us to be his witnesses. He never promised that it would be easy. Father, just as Jesus was rejected in his own hometown, we may also be rejected when we tell others about Jesus. Help us to remain his faithful witnesses, even when it isn't easy. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. There will be no Bible Study for the summer..

5 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2018 Sunday, Jul 08, 2018 FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME No excuses If only I had more money, more me, more assistance, more talent. We all have a pre y impressive laundry list of why we can t be of more service to God and to others. Even Saint Paul had his thorn in the flesh, some private difficulty that seemed to hold him back from being the apostle he sought to be. Paul kept praying for its removal so he could be free of this impediment. Finally he reinterpreted the thorn: not an impediment, but an opportunity to let God be God. Maybe it s me to stop protes ng and start serving! TODAY'S READINGS: Ezra 2:2 5; 2 Corinthians 12:7 10; Mark 6:1 6a (101). My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness. Monday, Jul 09, 2018 MEMORIAL OF AUGUSTINE ZHAO RONG, PRIEST, AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS The whole world in God s hands The gospel arrived in China in the fi h century, and Chris anity flourished during the T ang dynasty ( ). By the 13th century Beijing had its own bishop. In the 1500s missions to China were common, but growing suspicion of the West led to persecu ons and the destruc on of churches. One hundred and twenty Catholics, including Augus ne Zhao Rong (d. 1815), were martyred in China between the years 1648 and They were children, parents, catechists, laborers, and four priests. Thirtythree were foreign born missionaries. Pray for the courage of Chris ans everywhere. TODAY'S READINGS: Hosea 2:16, 17b 18, 21 22; Ma hew 9:18 26 (383). Courage, daughter! Your faith has saved you. Tuesday, Jul 10, 2018 Think unto others... A woman once refused to extend her hand at the Sign of Peace during Mass. At the me it seemed unfriendly, even rude to the woman next to her. But a er Mass, she explained that her arthri s was paining her terribly and shaking hands would have hurt her. The woman si ng next to her felt embarrassed that she had taken offense so wrongly. How o en do we, like the Pharisees, leap to a nega ve assessment of the mo va ons of another only to find out they meant nothing of the kind? Think gently of others, as you would like them to think of you. TODAY'S READINGS: Hosea 8:4 7, 11 13; Ma hew 9:32 38 (384). When the demon was cast out, the Pharisees said, By the ruler of the demons he casts out the demons. Wednesday, Jul 11, 2018 MEMORIAL OF BENEDICT, ABBOT Be moderately holy The main elements of Saint Benedict s famous monas c rule are sleep, prayer, and manual labor. Chapter 48 of the Rule states: Idleness is the enemy of the soul. Therefore, the brothers should have specified periods for manual labor as well as for prayerful reading.... They must not become distressed if local condi ons or their poverty should force them to do the harves ng themselves. When they live by the labor of their hands, as our fathers and the apostles did, then they are really monks. Yet, all things are to be done with modera on on account of the.fainthearted. Remember Benedict s concern for modera on. It is the key to all aspects of Chris an piety. TODAY'S READINGS: Hosea 10:1 3, 7 8, 12; Ma hew 10:1 7 (385). "Sow for yourselves jus ce, reap the fruit of piety. Thursday, Jul 12, 2018 Love is bigger than hurt Joseph had it tough as the second youngest in a family of 12 brothers. Picked on and hated because he was his dad Jacob s favorite, Joseph ended up sold into slavery by his brothers. A er many years of separa on from his family, he again meets his brothers, only this me the tables are turned: Joseph is in a posi on of power, and his brothers are the vulnerable ones. It wouldn t have taken much for Joseph to tap back into those feelings of hurt, betrayal, and rage and respond measure for measure. But he went beyond that, back to the sibling love he so cherished, and reacted with not only kindness but an outpouring of generosity. We, too, have that capacity and power for a love that is bigger than hurt. TODAY'S READINGS: Hosea 11:1 4, 8e 9; Ma hew 10:7 15 (386). But [Joseph s] brothers could give him no answer, so dumbfounded were they at him. Friday, Jul 13, 2018 Get smart, but keep it simple Some mes it may seem that the gospel s call to simplicity doesn t stand a chance. Popular spiritual writer Henri Nouwen expressed this dilemma well: So o en the problems of the world seem so complex and intricate that your word strikes me as embarrassingly simple, he wrote in a prayer that con nued, but you, O Lord, said, Be clever as serpents and innocent as doves. Let me retain innocence and simplicity in the midst of this complex world. That s a good prayer for all of us as we try to balance spiritual life and daily life. TODAY'S READINGS: Hosea 14:2 10; Ma hew 10:16 23 (387). "I am sending you out like wolves among sheep. Saturday, Jul 14, 2018 MEMORIAL OF KATERI TEKAKWITHA, VIRGIN Witness respec ully In his poem Exploding Chippewas, poet Mark Turco e writes of his Na ve American ancestors, In my bones some of them weep, / strapped with their own braids / to slowly swinging crosses, / their meatless faces ght / with skin, / while others stomp down / the grass in quiet circles, / gripping shards of starry cloth / between their teeth, / dripping / blood, white, and blue. Kateri Tekakwitha is said to have been shunned by her people when she became Chris an, but North and South American na ve peoples have also suffered countless indigni- es at the hands of well meaning Chris ans. Spreading the word depends onprofound respect as much as it does on zeal. TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 6:1 8; Ma hew 10:24 33 (388). Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. Invest just
