2 Welcome We warmly welcome you to worship at The Presbyterian Church in Basking Ridge. We pray that you will be encouraged in your journey of faith and drawn closer to God by your experience with us. Children and Families Childcare for infants and children ages 2 and younger is available in the church nursery during our Sunday morning services. Pagers are used to contact parents during the worship services when necessary. Oak Table Service We believe that worship nurtures children and that children enrich our worship life together. If your children become restless in worship, please feel free to quietly move around with them or join them on the carpet for young children behind the seating area. Sunday Worship Services 9:00 a.m. Nursery care is available for children age 2 years and younger. 10:15 a.m. Nursery care is available for children ages 2 years and younger. Children ages 3 grade 5 may go to Sunday School after the Message for Children. Middle School Students are invited to Bibles & Bagels in the Church House Library after the Message for Children. The first Sunday of the month, children in grades 3 and up are invited to remain in worship with their families. Online Sermons Recorded audio sermons from most Sundays are available on the church website at To access, click on the Sermons link under Worship and Music on the main menu. Amplification Headsets So that all may enjoy the worship service, sound amplification headsets are available from the ushers for those who need assistance with hearing. Who Does God Call Us to Be? We are a vibrant, warm and welcoming community of faith. Those who worship here come from a diverse range of backgrounds and would describe themselves in a rich variety of ways. We acknowledge our doubt, our struggles, and that we are all quite human and imperfect and that we are each at a unique place on our faith journey. We find our unity, our common identity, in Jesus Christ and together we seek to joyfully worship God and energetically minister to the needs of the world on God s behalf. We gather in anticipation of being transformed by the power, purpose and presence of God among us, and go forth equipped to love God and neighbor more deeply and more wholeheartedly. We believe that faithful leadership of a church requires being open to new possibilities, taking risks and learning from mistakes as we try again. Elise Bates Russell is the executive director of Johnsonburg Camp and Retreat Center in northwest New Jersey. Johnsonburg is the outdoor ministry serving all of the Presbyterian churches in NJ and beyond. The camp provides children and youth with fun, safe, professional outdoor experiences that grow them spiritually, physically, emotionally and socially. The center offers programmed retreats for youth and a space for groups to hold their own events as well. Elise loves working with the young adult staff in leadership development, caring for creation, improving the facilities, and making connections across the region and nation about the importance of these experiences! 7 Spiritual Formation Adult Small Group Jesus: First Century Rabbi Led by Rabbi Debra Smith Sundays, April 29, May 6 and 13 at 9 a.m. in the Church House Parlor Jesus lived and died as a Torah-observant Jew, working among many other great teachers in his era. Research shows that he was devoted to his Jewish practices, and was part of the emerging movement of rabbis that would eventually become "rabbinic Judaism." We will explore the first century world of Judaism and the Jewish roots of Jesus' teachings. Join us! This meeting is called for the purpose of hearing the Annual Report, for the election of new Trustees and members of the Financial Review Committee, and for the transaction of such other business as may properly come before the Congregation. ~April 22, Bill Emmitt President of Trustees Annual Congregational Meeting and Potluck Dinner Sunday, May 6 at 5 p.m. Enjoy a family potluck dinner featured as part of the Annual Congregational Meeting on Sunday May 6 at 5 p.m. in Westminster Hall. Together, we will celebrate the accomplishments of our ministry, acknowledge the individuals serving in leadership positions, and elect our new leaders. The evening will also feature music, opportunities for fellowship with old and new friends, and the sumptuous cuisine. Please note: There will be a rehearsal for the musical during the congregational meeting on May 6. Fellowship Take Me Out to the Ball Game NEW DATE! Our church was selected to use the Community Box at the Somerset Patriots on Sunday, June 17 at 1:05 p.m. We were lucky to be given a better date! Note: Tickets and great fellowship are free, but food and drinks are not included. Membership Interested in Becoming a Member? Next Class, May 20 We extend a warm invitation to our Exploring Membership class and luncheon on Sunday, May 20 from 11:15 a.m.-1:45 p.m. (immediately following the 10:15 a.m. worship service) in the Church House Parlor, located across the street from the Sanctuary building. This is an excellent opportunity to share your faith journey and learn more about the beliefs and ministry of our church. Lunch will be served and childcare will be provided, if requested in advance by calling the church office, Charter Day Volunteers The Welcome Team are seeking volunteers to help represent the church during Charter Day on May 19th during the celebrations in downtown Basking Ridge. This is a great way to show the caring and welcoming face of BRPC. 9 Opportunities to Give and Serve St. Thomas Mission Trip May 5-14, 2018 Can YOU Break Away From Work For a Week on a Vacation Island With Free Lodging? We have a great package for you! Join us May 5 on St. Thomas You ll come back reinvigorated and feeling really good about yourself after helping the hurricane victims recover. NO skills are required. There are still openings! Contact Mike Rountree at MikeRountree56@gmail.com or (908) Homeless Solutions Dinner Coordinator Four times a year BRPC provides dinner at the Homeless Solutions shelter in Morristown. This is a fun and engaging mission for families and individuals Mission Council is currently seeking someone to act as coordinator for these dinners who will be the liaison with Homeless Solutions to determine menu choice and numbers and recruit volunteers to shop and serve the dinner. We have a group of committed volunteers who are active with this ministry. Please contact Maureen Paterson if you are interested in learning more or would like to serve in this important role. God's Co-Op Pantry Do you live near Bernardsville? Would you be willing to help out twice a month to pick up baked goods from a local store and repackage them prior to the Sunday evening pantry hours? This would be a perfect family project! Please contact Maureen Paterson for information. Collection of Gently-Used and New Women's Clothing As you are bringing out your warmer-weather clothes, please consider the opportunity to help women transitioning from prison to the community via the Bo Robinson Transitional Center in Trenton, by providing clothing for their new life. The women need new or gently-used spring and summer clothing of all sizes especially jeans, slacks, tops, sweaters, and sweat suits (pants and top). New underwear, bras and socks, any sizes, are particularly needed. Please leave donations in the box in Westminster Hall, or in the coat rack near the parlor in the church house, by May 28. Friends of the Shelter Friends of the Shelter Kentucky Derby Day In 1987 several women in our congregation saw the need for a shelter for families affected by domestic violence. Accordingly, they founded Friends of the Shelter, an affiliate of Safe and Sound, Somerset. Since then, the Friends have painted, shopped, manned the 24 hour hot line ( ), been legal advocates and raised over two million dollars! The chief source of that money has been a result of an annual Kentucky Derby Day event which this year will be held at Roxiticus Golf Club in Mendham on May 5. 10 Youth and Young Adult Ministries Youth Summer Mission Trips *Senior High Youth (grades 9 12) Maine Workcamp ~ July 14 22, 2018 Join us as we spend an amazing week serving others by repairing homes for low income families, organizing games and crafts for children and visiting a senior center. Maine Workcamp Rally Sessions Learn how to Use Power Tools! Today from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, April 29 from 12-2 p.m. *Middle School Youth (grades 6 8) Morristown Mission Trip ~ August 9 12, 2018 Join us for a great week of service at Market Street Mission, serving food, playing games with residents, making no-sew fleece blankets, sorting food supplies and running a car wash. In addition, we will share stories, games, songs and crafts at Neighborhood House Pre-school. Middle School Youth Middle School Fellowship Dinner, discussion and games downstairs in the Youth Center of the Church House. Join us on Wednesday, April 25 from 6-7:30 p.m. Middle School Bibles & Bagels start at 10:15 a.m. worship then head to the church house library for bagels and a lively discussion We will meet on Sunday, April 22 but not the 29th. Young Adult Scholarships Each year, the Youth and Young Adult Ministry Council offers scholarships for college juniors, seniors or graduate students. The scholarships are granted to aid education at an accredited college, university or seminary for individuals dedicated to working in helping professions such as the pastorate, psychology, psychiatry, medicine, nursing, law and social work. Church members and Somerset Hills residents are eligible and can obtain applications in the church house or our website (ww.brpc.org). Applications due: May 21, Youth Sunday Weekend May 5 and 6 Join us at worship as our youth lead our services and share inspiring messages of faith! Note: Wednesday, May 2 Middle School Rehearsal from 7-7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5 Senior High Rehearsal from 11 a.m. 12 p.m. Trustees Sanctuary Front Window update Now that spring has arrived, the Trustees are moving ahead with the restoration of the front Sanctuary window. A contractor recommended by our Historic Architects, Connelly and Hickey, expects to begin the project by the end of this week. The process will include removing the window for restoration and temporarily closing the opening with plywood. The work is estimated to take about 4 weeks. We expect there to be temporary scaffolding both inside and outside the window area while the restoration is proceeding.

This year, they will also spend a day visiting a retirement home and leading games and crafts at a children s center.

11 Youth Workcamps & Retreats This year, we are offering 2 Workcamps and 6 Retreat weekends! July Senior High Maine Workcamp The Senior Highs of BRPC travel to Maine each summer to live out their faith in Christ by repairing the homes of people in need. This year, they will also spend a day visiting a retirement home and leading games and crafts at a children s center. August 9-12 for Middle School Morristown Workcamp Spend a long weekend living at the Presbyterian Church in Morristown and help at Market Street Mission serving food, playing games with residents, making no-sew fleece blankets and running a car wash. We will also serve the Neighborhood House Pre-School by leading games, songs and crafts. September-June: Retreats for Middle School, Senior High & Confirmands Each year, our mission outreach depends on the support of the entire congregation. Here s how you can help: Pledge to pray daily for a particular student or advisor. Pledge to write a letter to a camper - we ll give you a name before we leave. Donate Money: $20... will help offset gas costs for our rental vehicles $40... will pay for fleece for a blanket for men in recovery $50... will pay for three gallons of paint or meals on a retreat weekend $75 will pay for craft supplies for pre-school children $ will provide round trip transportation for one Maine Workcamper $ will subsidize the cost of one Senior Youth Advisor I d love to help!
