2 The Ascension seems like a conclusion, and in some ways it is. It concludes the earthly ministry of Jesus and ends one way the disciples have known him. But the Ascension is also a bridge to another, new and surprising way the disciples will know Jesus. Through the power of the Holy Spirit they will come to know the Risen Lord in and through his sacramental presence. God s wonderful love cannot be defeated. The Holy Spirit empowers us to experience the presence of our God in our world today. So, even though it is not a liturgical feast, it is a good day to celebrate Mother s Day. Today as we honor our mothers on their special day; we honor the power of love. The love we have received from our mom s is the very power of God s love. We receive an idea of what God looks like as we look at the love of a mother. How can we not be deeply grateful to the women who gave us the very gift of life? And how blessed are those of us whose moms in a very real way gave us a second birth, a birth to eternal life, as they nurtured us in the ways of faith? It is a good day to give thanks to all the moms in our faith community and pray that through their love and guided by the Holy Spirit they will continue to make the presence of God known to the world. We offer a Happy Mother s Day to all the Mothers of St. Mary on the Hill Parish. And we offer congratulations to all the children who received their First Holy Communion this weekend! We thank their teachers and families for helping our children to be so well prepared for this important event in their faith lives. First Communion is the beginning of a life of faith that continues to be strengthened and nourished by the Eucharist every Sunday at Mass. I ve asked our first communicants to wear their first communion dresses and suits so that we can all share in their joy as they receive Jesus in their second Holy Communion today. Catholic Communication Campaign Imagine five diocesan staff members trying to accomplish the same results as all the communication professionals in all the cities in the 90 counties of South Georgia combined are doing on a daily basis. The Catholic Communication Campaign collection on Pentecost weekend, May helps the Diocese of Savannah accomplish this goal. Half the collection will remain in South Georgia to fund the diocesan website, social media channels, and the Southern Cross as well as special projects like last year s Mass from Forsyth Park in Savannah. The other half funds national projects such as the and web sites. Part of our tithe next weekend will support this collection. The journey is June from 8:30 am - 12:30 pm. Approximately 40 adults and 70 youth are needed to help with this program. Please note that all volunteers age 18 and over must have attended VIRTUS training, have a current criminal background check and a signed Code of Conduct for Those Working with Minors on file at the Church Office. School News Kelly Boudreaux, an 8 th grade student at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic School, was recently named a People to People International (PTPI) 2013 Inspirational Merit Scholar. Boudreaux was chosen for the award based on her outstanding display of courage, leadership and inspirational qualities in the face of life s often difficult challenges. As a result of the award, Boudreaux will receive $2,000 toward participation as a delegate in a People to People Student Ambassador Program to Italy, France, Switzerland, and Austria. Boudreaux is one of only 11 students in the United States to receive the prestigious honor. Congratulations, Kelly! VIRTUS Training VIRTUS Protecting God s Children is a child sex abuse awareness and prevention program sponsored by the diocese. All employees and volunteers in the diocese who work with minors in their ministries on a regular basis must attend one VIRTUS session. The photography dates will be June 25 through June 29 and July 23 thru July 27. Each family photographed will receive a free directory and a free 8 by 10 portrait. No purchase is required; however, for those interested in purchasing portraits you may do so at the time of photography. You can make your appointment by going to the church website, and look for pictorial directory link. For those who do not have internet service you can make your appointment either of two ways. First, by signing up after Masses June 15/16 or June 22/23 or by calling the church office and they can assist you in making your appointment. We need everyone to be in our new pictorial directory. Elijah Cup at the 12:15 pm Sunday Mass The Elijah Cup program is a ministry to foster and support priestly and religious vocations. The Elijah Cup is a chalice that is presented to a family, couple, or individual each Sunday at the offering of the gifts. The chalice is taken home and used as a focal point while praying for our current and future priests, deacons, and sisters. The chalice is returned the following Sunday.
