Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. Daniel 12:2a,3

Saints Triumphant Sunday November 15 & 18, 2018 WELCOME TO ST. JOHN S We re thrilled that you are here today. Please sign the Friendship Register at the end of your pew so that we have a record of your visit. And please come and worship with us again. Please also introduce yourself to Pastor Kuske. He would love to meet you and to serve you in whatever way he can. OUR FACILITIES Our restrooms are located to the right as you leave the sanctuary in the Mother s Room and downstairs next to the exit. The members of St. John s believe that families should be encouraged to worship together. (Church, like much of life, needs to be taught to young children.) If your young one needs some time out, we have an A/V-equipped Mother s Room just outside the sanctuary to your right. If you need anything during the service, please feel free to ask an usher. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY As we approach the end of all things and the great Day of Judgment, we want to make sure we have it all straight; the readings for this Sunday help us prepare by their careful description of what is to come, so that we will not fear as we look and long for the day of his appearing. Rather, clinging to his grace in Word and sacraments we strive to live as though who know what to expect at the end of it all. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Lord Jesus, our Judge and King, you will come again with great power and glory to gather your people to your side. Until you return give us the strength to trust your Word which will not pass away and lead us to live in service to Christ in his purpose. In the name of our Savior and Lord we pray. Amen. Please Note Sunday service is video-recorded and will be aired on our local cable channel at noon today. If you would like a copy, please speak to pastor after the service. 2

THE COMMON SERVICE WITH HOLY COMMUNION Page 15 of Christian Worship THE RINGING OF THE BELLS and WELCOME TO GOD S HOUSE HYMN 1. Jerusalem the golden, With milk and honey blest The sight of it refreshes The weary and oppressed: I know not, oh, I know not What joys await us there, What radiancy of glory, What bliss beyond compare: To sing the hymn unending With all the martyr throng, Amidst the halls of Zion Resounding full with song. Jerusalem the Golden Christian Worship, Oh, sweet and blessed country, The home of God s elect! Oh, sweet and blessed country That eager hearts expect, Where they who with their leader Have conquered in the fight Forever and forever Are clad in robes of white. Jesus in mercy bring us To that dear land of rest Where sings the host of heaven Your glorious name to bless. 3. The Christ is ever with them; The daylight is serene. The pastures of the blessed Are ever rich and green. There is the throne of David; And there from care released, The shout of them that triumph, The song of them that feast. To God enthroned in glory The Church s voices blend, The Lamb forever blessed, The Light that knows no end. This twelfth century hymn, first conceived by Bernard of Cluny, depicts an idyllic, heavenly scene. The hymn is gloriously set to the English folk tune THAXTED. 4 M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen CONFESSION OF SINS M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. LORD, HAVE MERCY (Kyrie) ABSOLUTION M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen 4

PRAYER AND PRAISE M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. GLORY BE TO GOD (Gloria in Excelsis) 5

PRAYER OF THE DAY M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you! M: Let us pray. Almighty God and Savior, you have set the final day and hour when we shall be delivered from this world of sin and death. Keep us ever watchful for the coming of your Son that we may sit with him and all your holy ones at the marriage feast in heaven; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen COMMEMORATION OF THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED M: On this celebration of Saints Triumphant, we rejoice, give thanks and remember the members of St. John s that entered their true rest in this last year as well as others who have escaped the sorrows of this world and now, because Jesus is their Savior, are sharing the eternal banquet of heaven. M: I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; C: And whoever lives and believes in me will never die. 8 THE WORD PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 118 Christian Worship, page 108 The LORD is my strength and my song;* he has become my salvation. The LORD S right hand is lifted high;* the LORD S right hand has done mighty things! I will not die but live,* and will proclaim what the LORD has done. Refrain I will give you thanks, for you answered me;* you have become my salvation. The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone;* the LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. 8

This is the day the LORD has made;* let us rejoice and be glad in it. Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain Refrain Tune: Marty Haugen GIA Publications, Inc., Chicago, IL, All rights reserved. Used by permission. SECOND LESSON 1 Thessalonians 4: Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord s own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so, we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage each other with these words. VERSE OF THE DAY (Revelation 7:15a) M: Alleluia. They are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple. Alleluia. 9

PLEASE STAND GOSPEL Mark 13:24-27 After the announcement of the gospel, the congregation sings: C: Glory be to you, O Lord! 24 But in those days, following that distress, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; 25 the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken. 26 At that time men will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens. After the Gospel, the congregation sings: C: Praise be to you, O Christ! 10

NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. PLEASE BE SEATED 11

HYMN OF THE DAY Like the Golden Sun Ascending Christian Worship, Like the golden sun ascending, Breaking through the gloom of night, On the earth its glory spending So that darkness takes to flight, Thus my Jesus from the grave And death s dismal, dreadful cave Rose triumphant Easter morning At the early purple dawning. 2. Thanks to you, O Christ victorious! Thanks to you, O Lord of life! Death has now no power o er us, You have conquered in the strife. Thanks because you did arise And have opened paradise! None can fully sing the glory Of the resurrection story. 3. You have died for my transgression; All my sins on you were laid. You have won for me salvation; On the cross my debt was paid. From the grave I shall arise And shall meet you in the skies. Death itself is transitory; I shall lift my head in glory. 4. Grant me grace, O blessed Savior, And your Holy Spirit send That my life and my behavior May be pleasing to the end, That I may not fall again Into death s grim pit and pain, Whence by grace you have retrieved me And from which you have relieved me. 5. For the joy your advent gave me, For your gospel s great reward, For your baptism which has saved me, For your supper and your Word, For your death, the bitter scorn, For your resurrection morn: Lord, I thank you and extol you, And in heav n I shall behold you. Text: Thomas H. Kingo, , abr.; tr. George A. T. Rygh, , alt. 12

SERMON Daniel 12:1-3 Shine Like the Heavens! You can shine because God has sent Michael. You do shine because he has written your name in the book. You will shine because of the Resurrection. At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people everyone whose name is found written in the book will be delivered. 2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. PLEASE STAND 13

THE SACRAMENT PREFACE M: The Lord be With You. C: And also with you. M: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up unto the Lord. M: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. C: It is good and right so to do. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: 14

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY (Sanctus) WORDS OF INSTITUTION M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread. When he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. 15

PAX DOMINI M: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen O CHRIST, LAMB OF GOD (Agnus Dei) PLEASE BE SEATED DISTRIBUTION 16

HYMN Blessed Are the Saints of God Christian Worship, Blessed are the saints of God; They are bought with Christ s own blood. They are ransomed from the grave; Life eternal they shall have. With them numbered may we be Here and in eternity. 2. They are justified by grace; They enjoy the Savior s peace. All their sins are washed away; They shall stand in God s great day. With them numbered may we be Here and in eternity. 3. They are lights upon the earth, Children of a heav nly birth. One with God, with Jesus one, Glory is in them begun. With them numbered may we be Here and in eternity. Text: Joseph Humphreys, b. 1720, alt. HYMN I Know of a Sleep in Jesus Name Christian Worship, I know of a sleep in Jesus name, A rest from all toil and sorrow; Earth folds in her arms my weary frame And shelters it till the morrow. My soul is at home with God in heav n; My sorrows are past and over. 2. I know of a morning, bright and fair When tidings of joy shall wake us, When songs from on high shall fill the air And God to his glory take us, When Jesus shall bid us rise from sleep How joyous that hour of waking! 3. God s Son to our graves then makes his way; His voice hear all tribes and nations; The trumpet of God will sound the day And shake all the earth s foundations. He calls out aloud, O dead, come forth! In glory we rise to meet him. 4. O Jesus, draw near my dying bed And take me into your keeping And say when my spirit hence is fled, This child is not dead, but sleeping. And leave me not, Savior, till I rise To praise you in life eternal. Text: Magnus B. Landstad, , abr.; tr. The Lutheran Hymnary, Decorah, 1913, alt. 17

M: O God the Father, source of all goodness, in your loving kindness you sent your Son to share our humanity. We thank you that through him you have given us pardon and peace in this sacrament. We also pray that you will not forsake us, but will rule our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit so that we willingly serve you day after day, though Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen 18

BLESSING M: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace. C: Amen. Amen. Amen HYMN Lord, when your glory I shall see And taste your kingdom s pleasure, Your blood my royal robe shall be, My joy beyond all measure!
