1 919/ February 16, 2017 CHURCH COUNCIL ADOPTS FIVE-STAR VISION COME TO CHURCH THIS SUNDAY TO HEAR ALL ABOUT THE VISION! The Visioning Team will be making a presentation at all three services. Upon receiving a presentation by the Visioning Team led by our District Superintendent Carol Goehring, Church Council on Monday evening, January 30, 2017, approved a Five-Star Vision for Epworth United Methodist Church. After a year of study, prayer, research, meetings, and contemplation, a vision for our church has been set forth. As we, through committees, develop plans; our goals, objectives, and activities should reflect one or more aspects of our church s vision. The Five-Star Vision follows: A CHRIST-CENTERED FAITH COMMUNITY COMMITTED TO TRANSFORMING THE WORLD ONE DISCIPLE AT A TIME EPWORTH UNITED METHODIST CHURCH FIVE STAR VISION INCREASE SPIRITUAL FORMATION Our Associate Pastor, Dr. Sangwoo Kim will take the lead in creating a basic plan/roadmap for Epworth s spiritual formation. Provide small group gatherings to meet the range of spiritual needs of our congregation: Covenant s Discipleship classes Prayer s Class on Spiritual Practices Journeying Toward Justice IMPROVE COMMUNICATION Strengthen the ability to communicate clearly and constructively among members of the Epworth community. Identify opportunities to communicate other than Etchings, website and bulletin. Design attractive and effective outdoor and indoor signage. Create rebranding for Epworth that is eye captivating and sends two important messages: Epworth is an inclusive community for all people and Epworth is known as a neighborhood church. 1

2 DEVELOP, EVALUATE AND ENHANCE MISSION MINISTRIES Serve the needs of others (within our church and outside our church). Create an interesting way(s) to share Epworth s story of outreach. Engage with Conference and District level groups. MAXIMIZE RESOURCES FOR MINISTRY Maintain and support our greatest financial needs. Improve the physical church facilities (In preparation, we have begun creating a list for the Trustees). Continue to attract, develop and maintain a skilled and dynamic staff. Encourage greater involvement and leadership of our laity in the work of the church. WELCOME, ENGAGE AND SERVE MORE PEOPLE Ensure that our actions embrace all God s children. Explore ways to effectively identify and adapt to multiple generations that exist within our congregation. Educate our congregation and others about social justice issues, create an environment at Epworth that is welcoming to all and engage with our Durham community in order to promote social justice. We served 172 persons. UNITED METHODIST WOMEN All are invited to join Epworth United Methodist Women immediately following the 11 o clock service for lunch followed by the program entitled Epworth United Methodist Women: Yesterday, Today and Into the Future. YOUNG ADULT GROUP now have weekly meetings during the Sunday School hour in the Conference Room. THE RUTH CIRCLE will meet Monday, Feb. 20th in the parlor at 1:30pm. Come learn about our mission outreach. All are welcome. WORKSHOP For the first three Sundays in Lent (March 5, 12, and 19), Epworth will offer a workshop entitled Up Close and Personal: Understanding Race, Privilege and Power. Members of New Creation UMC, Durham, will be joining us for the workshop. Our workshop leader is Dr. Zoila Airall, Epworth member and Associate VP for Campus Life at Duke University. Workshop sessions will begin at 3:00 PM and end at 5:15 PM, and are appropriate for adults and for high school juniors and seniors. Child care will be available. 4 ONLY ONE WEEK TO GO - - OUTREACH AUCTION FUNDRAISER will be after the AM service on February 26th. A meal will be provided including drink and dessert. There will be a vegetarian option. Cost will be $8 for adults, Children 12 and under $5. Available items up for bid.. vacation home "rentals" (Kiawah Island, Emerald Isle, and Hyco Lake), DPAC tickets art work a long weekend in Asheville dance lessons pottery lessons design and planting of a deck or patio garden. And MORE (We now have proxy bidding if you are not going to be here on the 26 th.) There will also be a re-gifting table, a media corner and a bake sale. If you have donated to previous fundraisers we thank you very much for your contributions. We hope you won't mind if Outreach members contact you. We would also love to have donations from folks who haven't donated in the past. We are accepting a wide range of goods and services. Some ideas for services from previous fundraisers include: handyman work, babysitting, cooked meals, car washing, lessons, professional services... We aren't accepting CRT televisions, large furniture or other items that don't function or are in poor condition. 5 FAMILIES MOVING FORWARD Epworth's next volunteer evenings for Families Moving Forward (formerly Interfaith Hospitality Network or IHN) are Monday, March 6 and Wednesday, March 8. On Monday, we will be serving the meal provided by Belo Shelton and cleaning up following the meal (5:30-6:45), helping to watch a small number of younger children while their parents are at a group meeting (6:20-7:30) and tutoring school aged children (6:20-7:30). We have 3 volunteers who will help with serving the meal and childcare on Monday. We need 3-5 additional folks to help with childcare and tutoring from 6:20-7:30 Monday also. The United Methodist Men have volunteered to cover Wednesday, March 8, along with 2 other volunteers. Please contact Jim Wilcox to sign up to help on Wednesday. FMF is now located at 300 Queen St. which is behind the Main Library, downtown. This is a ministry that helps families move from temporary homelessness to stable housing and provides much support during this transformation. Epworth has been a part of this ministry for 23 years.
