5 From Sunday School to Bible Fellowship Bible Fellowship is an integral part of what we are all about here at First Baptist. An excerpt from our Mission Statement reads: We are an open fellowship of free and faithful Christians committed to a journey characterized by serious study, intentional worship, loving and compassionate fellowship and hands-on ministry. In my own faith journey, the early impact of what we define as Bible Fellowship remains indelibly with me. I was an army brat and the army base where I grew up held worship services in a World War I barrack converted for that purpose. Bible Fellowship was called Sunday School, a term, I think, that provides a psychological barrier to participation by some of my generation no matter what it is called. My first Sunday School teacher was a retired World War I aviator. When I was eight years old he organized a Sunday School for kids on the base. Other than one story about King David, I really do not remember much of what he taught. More than what he said, however, I remember the man and how he taught through example. He took us on camping trips, swimming trips, nature walks and many other activities. He used these occasions to teach indelible life lessons on justice, fairness, cooperation, honesty, duty, etc. Those lessons have served me well. The Bible has been and still is my manual for connecting all the dots that provide clarity to what being a Christian is all about. The Old Testament, very simply stated, deals with mankind s break from God and the need for reconciliation. The New Testament tells of God coming to earth in human form in the person of Jesus. He taught in both word and action, died on a cross to redeem humanity, was resurrected, and abides with us as the Holy Spirit. On my faith journey I often wrestle with doubt, a great motivator, I find, in my search for understanding. Perhaps we all have a little more Thomas in us than we care to admit. Thomas doubt led to a spiritual revelation. However, the more we know the less we doubt. Each Sunday, interacting with other Christians, I learn something new; sometimes a little, other times a lot. I am only ninety years old. I am confident that by the time I reach the century mark, I will know a lot more than I know now. No matter what your age is, there is a place for you in our Bible Fellowship program. Ray Casner, Tapestries Class
