VOLUME 9, ISSUE 4 ST. TIMOTHY S NEWS PAGE 3 A WORD FROM JOHN As the beginning of a new church year dawns, we find ourselves in a world experiencing great turmoil. Our hearts have been deeply moved at the sight of the consequences of global terrorism: streams of refugees painfully making their way across the Mediterranean Sea and trudging moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas, and little children over many kilometres from Turkey into Europe. Our various levels of governments, along with other community organizations, are earnestly seeking to determine what Canada s response should be to what has been called the greatest humanitarian crisis since the Second World War. And what about the church? Should the church pull inward seeking to maintain an island of peace and tranquility in the midst of such worldwide social upheaval, or should the church be in the discussion even serving as a leader in efforts to find an appropriate response? Here at St. Timothy s, we, too, have to make a choice: should we leave refugee sponsorship to others or should we be involved? Simply put, we must ask ourselves, What would Jesus do? From Pope Francis to our Archbishop, Christian leaders have been encouraging the faithful to determine what they can do. In this Diocese, all Anglican involvement will be directed by the Anglican United Refugee Alliance (AURA). At the direction of the Advisory Board, a small task force has been formed to discover what would be involved in sponsorship and to take preliminary steps to inform our members and to help the parish discern the way forward. The members of the task force are Bob Saunders, Monica Wolkowski, and Roz Trotter with Rie Threndyle advising us from her experience of sponsorship. To date, I have attended a meeting with Ian McBride the executive Director of AURA, Monica Wolkowski has attended an AURA workshop, and the task force has met to do preliminary planning. We propose to have a Refugee Awareness Sunday in the near future and to seek input from as many members as possible. The backdrop to our efforts is the knowledge that there are now over 60,000,000 refugees in the world. This is a world-wide dilemma not just a Syrian problem. We have been counselled that refugee settlement must be done carefully; it cannot be rushed. And we have been told that there is strong support available from both the Diocese and the federal government to any parish wishing to sponsor a family. Two months ago, Carolyn and I were invited guests at the wedding of one of her young colleagues. Over the course of the evening we met many of her relatives. This family had been Vietnamese boat people; they had suffered terribly in their harrowing escape from the collapse of South Viet Nam. Now, forty years later, it was astonishing to see the accomplishments of this family: many of them had become leaders in business and in health care in their adopted country of Canada. Once again we are facing a human crisis; might it also be a great opportunity? Please pray that together we would discern God s will for us in this time. John + WARDENS It has been a busy fall, and now we are into Advent and the Christmas season. The past three months have seen a number of events that have contributed to the spiritual and social life of St Timothy s: The Fast Friars Corn Roast and their Senior s Pot Luck Supper were once again very successful events. The second annual September Dinner Dance was greatly enjoyed by all. Thanks to all who made this a success again this year. The basket raffle was concluded at the Pot Luck supper and raised over $1000 for church funds. The Cruisin quartet, that uses Lamont Hall for their practices, again gave a concert this year. Thanks to them and the organizers the concert raised over $1000 for our general funds. A monthly discussion group has been successfully started up and has had a number of speakers who have been very interesting. Our Postulant, Monique Taylor, is leading a study of the Ten Commandments on Sunday mornings before the 11 o clock service. With our lawyer s help we are proceeding with our claim to the City of Toronto for damages from the underpass construction to the parking lot and the north transept walls as well as other issues. At the special vestry meeting on November 9, we received authorization from the congregation to use up to $100,000 from the Endowment Fund to repave the parking lot and to fix the north transept wall. We expect both of these projects to be completed in time for Christmas. Within a couple of weeks we expect the City of Toronto to activate the traffic lights at the corner of Lamont Avenue. Thanks to all who pressed City Council to have these installed. As we enter Advent, we wish you a time of meaningful preparation for Christmas and many blessings. Vegetables and fruit were donated to, and gratefully received by ACSA. All Souls /All Saints Day was a very memorable time as parishioners lit candles in remembrance of loved ones. Thanks go to Kathy and Bob Saunders for the preparation and set-up of the candles. The Apostles, Gospel Writers and Remembrance Day banners adorned the nave and the front of the church. Thank you to Matthew Tandy for hanging these banners. November 29 marked the first Sunday of Advent, the beginning of a new church year. Our Advent wreath holds five candles: three purple, one rose, and one white. Hope, Peace, Joy and Love candles mark the four Sundays in Advent. The white candle is the Christ candle and is lit on Christmas Eve. May the Advent season be a time of inner quiet as you prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Christmas Blessing to all. 5 VOLUME 9, ISSUE 4 ST. TIMOTHY S NEWS PAGE 5 CRAFT CLUB Many thanks to our faithful supporters who attended St. Timothy s annual Christmas Sale. We are glad to see happy shoppers from past years and to welcome newcomers. We hope they will become regulars and enjoy the fellowship while getting a start on their Christmas shopping. The ladies in our group contribute their time and talents all year towards the success of the Christmas Sale, working at Lamont Hall as well as at home. Traditional projects and a search for new ideas are already in the works for the 2016 event. One-of-a-kind Christmas ornaments made every year for residents at Shepherd Lodge will be delivered by John at their Christmas service. This year a small hand-decorated wooden JOY ornament will sit nicely on a night table. These gifts are always gratefully received and treasured. We wish you and your families the blessings of Christmas and a Happy Healthy New Year. Ann, Eileen, Marge and Nora GIFT SHOPPING MADE EASY St. Timothy s gift card program makes it easy to pick up a gift while helping our church. Gift cards can be ordered for a wide range of retailers, including major department stores, gas stations, coffee shops, restaurants, and home improvement stores. A full list is available at the gift card table each Sunday. Our plan is to have orders placed (and paid for) each Sunday to be delivered the following Sunday. So far that arrangement has been possible, but we encourage you to place orders early for delivery before Christmas, preferably by Sunday, December 6, and absolutely no later than December 13. St. Timothy s will receive a percentage of each card s purchase price to support our ministries. Barbara Broadbent, Joan Marshman HEALTH & SAFETY The Health and Safety Committee have been working on a directive handout on the proper procedure for Emergency Evacuation. It is anticipated that this directive will be available in the pews in the new year, and in the next newsletter. In order to prevent confusion, it is important that we all read it in order to be prepared in the event of the need for an evacuation. Carolyn Stephenson

VOLUME 9, ISSUE 4 ST. TIMOTHY S NEWS PAGE 6 Kids and Youth Connect with Liturgy Members of Kids Connect and Youth Connect are hard at work preparing for the first intergenerational service of the school year. It fell on November 29, the first Sunday of the new Church year. Our Family Ministries Pastoral Associate Elaine Vanderwerf is sharing her musical gifts with the young people and together they ll be ringing in the new Church year in a very special manner during the 11 o clock service. The children also will participate in the service by reading, leading prayers, and job-shadowing some of the adult volunteers such as the Sidespersons. The idea behind intergenerational Sundays is to include our younger parishioners in Sunday worship. When they graduate from the Kids Connect and Youth Connect programs, we hope they ll have developed a habit of participating in church. Most Sundays the young people continue with their own lessons and activities separate from the rest of the congregation. We join together for Holy Communion on the first and second Sundays. On the third Sunday (normally Morning Prayer), we stay downstairs, and on the fourth Sunday, a member of the clergy comes down to celebrate the Eucharist with the children in a more informal setting. During the school year, in the three months that have five Sundays, the fifth Sunday is designated intergenerational Sunday. It s been a rich learning experience for all of us. It s easy to lose sight of how difficult it can be for someone not familiar with Anglican liturgy to follow along. In May, during our last intergenerational service, we were very pleased to see how familiar our young people have become with the Liturgy of the Eucharist. However, they still found the Liturgy of the Word a bit confusing because they re not generally present for that part of the service. We ve been working to include components of the Liturgy of the Word in our downstairs Celebrations of the Eucharist. We re very appreciative of the choir members and sidespersons who encourage the students to job shadow and assist them. The experience gained from these opportunities may lead to new volunteers and also make the younger members of our parish feel part of the community. Please contact Elaine or Peg Cassidy Kay if your group would like to be involved on an intergenerational Sunday on January 31, and/or on May 29, Peg Cassidy Kay The lesson was about Samuel selecting David to be the next king and the children learned that God sees differently and more clearly than people do. Then they made these fun glasses out of pipe cleaners. From left: Charlize Smellie, Emma Smellie, Shaniah Douglas and Elizabeth Hogg.

VOLUME 9, ISSUE 4 ST. TIMOTHY S NEWS PAGE 7 YOUTH EVENTS My name is Jacob Chung and I have been going to St. Timothy s for as long as I can remember since I was born pretty much. My parents, Kevin and Michelle, have also volunteered numerous times at this church especially with the Sunday school program. I will talk about my first two experiences at youth events as well as some of the reflections experienced. The first youth event I attended would be Board Game Night. This was held from 7-9 p.m. at the church. Board Game Night was an event where anyone could come and play board and card games with one another for 2 hours just to get to know each other. I ended up bringing a friend from my school whose house I went to before the event. Alex (Alexandra) brought one other friend too. About 10 people including me showed up. There were refreshments like popcorn, chips, and soda drinks. All youth participated and my friend said he enjoyed his time when we discussed our highlights at the end of the event. The other event I went to would be the Halloween event where the youth were to carve pumpkins, eat pizza together (free pizza and dinner!), and give out candies to people who came to the church. Once we arrived we joined Elaine, Shauna, and the other youth at Walker Hall to eat the pizza that they had ordered. When we got there Shauna told us where the candy was kept and that we would be handing out candies by the door on Sheppard Ave. Before we went to the Sheppard Ave. door several families arrived at the door beside the parking lot, so we gave them candies and told them to go to the Sheppard Ave. door. We handed out candies, to about kids and hot chocolate to a few adults. Still it was nice to hang out with other youth on Halloween. I enjoyed the first 2 youth events of the year and look forward to these coming events: Jacob Chung Friday, November 27: The Great Prayer Adventure, Youth Night 7:00-9:00 p.m. Sunday, November 29: Intergenerational Service 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 11: 'Twas the Youth Night Before Christmas 7:00-9:00 p.m. Sunday, December 20: Pageant 11:00 a.m. service LIBRARY Once again we gear up for the busyness of the Season. Let s take time to remember what this most demanding and exciting time of the year is really all about. On display in the library are some of the books, CDs, and DVDs with Advent and Christmas themes, including Daybreak Daily Reflections on Advent and Christmas and an Encyclopedia of Christmas everything you ever wanted to know about Christmas traditions, Christmas around the world, and more. Look for Christmas fiction too. Recently added are CDs from the Gaither Gospel Series and a DVD fresh from PBS, Ancient Roads from Christ to Constantine. There is the new Jan Karon Come Rain or Come Shine, additions to The Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency series and lots of things for the children, downstairs in the kid s library. Of a more practical nature is Parish Works: Tips and Templates to Revitalize Your Church by Ward McCance at 254 in the Non-fiction area, and Prayers for the Domestic Church, a Handbook for Worship in the Home by Edward Hays at 249. One can never have enough socks. Another Christmas has come and gone and I didn t get a single pair. People will insist on giving me books. J.K. 8 VOLUME 9, ISSUE 4 ST. TIMOTHY S NEWS PAGE 8 MUSIC Our observance of Advent at St. Timothy s traditionally involves a few musical changes. For example, the joyous hymn Glory to God (Gloria in Excelsis in Latin), temporarily retires from our services, to return with great fanfare on Christmas Eve. In its place, we sing a hymn with a solemn and repentant tone: Holy God, holy and mighty, holy immortal one, have mercy upon us (Trisagion in Greek, meaning thrice holy ). In addition, we re going to try something new this year: we re going to set aside our familiar musical setting for the Communion Service and employ one with a mood suitable for Advent. Advent has an expectant, watchful character. The focus is on Christ s return to Earth and, on a personal level, our state of preparedness for that monumental event. We adjust the liturgical colours, the readings, and the prayers to match the season and it's appropriate to fine-tune the music, too. At St. Timothy s, we re especially familiar with two Communion settings: one by John Merbecke (c.1510-c.1585) and the other by Richard Proulx ( ). We use the Merbecke setting (arranged by famed Toronto organist and composer Healey Willan in 1934) whenever we follow the Form in the Language of the Book of Common Prayer 1962 on page 230 of the Book of Alternative Services, generally on the first Sunday of each month. At other sung Eucharistic services, we use the Proulx setting. Richard Proulx (his last name rhymes with new ) composed more than 300 works, including congregational music, sacred and secular choral works, operas, and organ music. He composed A Community Mass in 1971, especially to accommodate the newly-revised words of the English language liturgy developed by the Consultation on Common Texts, an ecumenical group of scholars who produce liturgical texts for common use by North American Christian Churches (and used in the BAS). In addition, Proulx adapted existing, much older Communion settings for use with the new words. One of those adaptations is the one we ll be singing at St. Timothy s during Advent: Franz Schubert s Deutsche Messe (German Mass). Schubert composed the work in 1827 and intended to appeal to broad congregational use as opposed to those settings designed to be offered by a highly trained choir. At St. Timothy s, we have an enthusiastic, singing congregation and we ve quite deliberately chosen a Communion setting suitable for all to join in and sing. The words remain the same but the music accompanying the hymns Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord (Sanctus et Benedictus in Latin) and Jesus, Lamb of God (Agnus Dei in Latin) will be different. You ll find both selections in the Common Praise hymn book at #735 and #747. Jonathan Kay, Music Director He worked in Minneapolis, Seattle, and Chicago. FAVOURITE BIBLE QUOTES Psalm 23 [1]The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want; [2] he makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters; [3] he restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. [4] Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. [5] Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies; thou anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows. [6] Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. Luke 6.31 [31] Do to others as you would have them do to you. Luke 6.35 [35] But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Corinthians [4]Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant [5] or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; [6] It does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. [7] It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. [8]Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end.

VOLUME 9, ISSUE 4 ST. TIMOTHY S NEWS PAGE 9 PROPERTY The Property Committee continues to be very busy. The job jar remains full; however, thanks to the positive results from the Special Vestry held November 8, two major projects have been approved. Paving of the parking lot and repairs to the wall in the north transept will both be moving ahead. As well, many small maintenance projects have been completed over the past three months. Thanks to Mathew for making sure repairs were made to the boiler and for arranging to have the catch basin in the parking lot cleared. We no longer have the small pond in the south end of the parking lot after every rainfall! Some of the tasks that still require attention are: - redirecting the downspouts - installing a new door for the handicap washroom with a power-assist opening - painting the interior and exterior of the church - rebuilding the stairs to the south entrance of the Walker Hall Doug Peers FAST FRIARS We wish to thank all those who have supported the Fast Friars over the past year and we look forward to working with everyone in We hope that everyone has a safe and happy holiday season. As always, the Men s Club is open to all men of the parish. If you would like to make sure you are on our mailing list, contact a member of the executive, or you can call me David Blizzard, , or us at ffriars@gmail.com, and we will make sure you are contacted for our next event. Respectfully submitted, We are near the end of fall and into Advent and the Christmas season. The Men s Club hosted our Annual Senior s Pot Luck Dinner with over 90 people in attendance. This year we had Doug Peers grandchildren entertaining with Celtic dancing. David Blizzard, President We have started planning for the upcoming New Year with our first event slated for February - the Men s Club Breakfast. Watch for further information to become available. BELLES The Belles wish to thank all those who supported the Christmas Event. It was a joy to see all the familiar faces and share the fun and laughter. St. Timothy s Café was a new venture which we think may take a little time to catch on. Lunch was enjoyed, gifts were purchased, jams and preserves were stocked up for the winter, and we had a good time. As we look forward to a new year we wish you all a Merry Christmas. Peggy Perkins

VOLUME 9, ISSUE 4 ST. TIMOTHY S NEWS PAGE 10 An Anglican Moment + Outreach + The Five Year Outreach Kitten Update Anglicans have always had a strong mandate to live the Gospel. One of the ways we do this is through outreach to those needing hope, encouragement, and a hand up in life. Throughout the years, Anglicans have started hospitals and schools; have initiated a yearly social justice conference and supported through Faithworks, a wide variety of community ministries such as the Downsview Youth Covenant and refugee support offered by AURA. Thanks to your support, St. Timothy s is a vital part of this Anglican tradition. Your support for our food drive and food support for children and youth, Out of the Cold, support for Aboriginal programs, the Hot Lunch and our own Wednesday Breakfast Program is making a difference in our community. Would you believe that our Wednesday Breakfast Program has been operating for six years now? For the past six years we have offered a safe, welcoming, and supportive place as well as a nutritious breakfast for those in need in our community. Our guests have the opportunity each Wednesday to sit quietly or connect with each other. In the midst of the challenges in their own lives they care for and help each other. The six-year mark is easy to remember because we were in operation for almost a year when a conversation with Snake, one of our guests, led to an adorable kitten, Timothy, joining the Buligan household. Six months later Snake gave us Tabitha, Timothy s adorable halfsister. Despite the challenges in his own life, Snake took such good and responsible care of those kittens that our veterinarian and her assistant commented on how well-cared-for they were. So... here they are... in a five-year -update (hard to believe) on the Outreach Kittens Rev. Kathy Buligan Timothy (a.k.a. Mr. Mischief) I am SUCH a good boy Tabitha (a.k.a. The Princess) I am S-O-O-O in charge ADVENT OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES Out of the Cold for 2015 Bringing Hope In Our Community The shorter days and dropping temperatures are a reminder that the homeless in our Scarborough community face greater challenges during the cold months. (Think of last February with its month long below zero temperatures!) Knox United Church, with the help of many local churches and service agencies, hosts Out of the Cold from November to the end of March. This program provides a warm and safe place to sleep, a nourishing supper, breakfast, and much-needed fellowship to the homeless in our community. St. Timothy s will host one session this year: Friday evening dinner on December 18 and Saturday morning breakfast on December 19. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to reach out and contribute your time, talent, or resources to meet an ongoing need in our community. You would be welcome to help serve meals, chat with guests, help with set-up or clean-up, bake a cake or cookies, make a donation to help with food costs there are so many ways to help with this still-needed, 27-year-old program.
