Brief History of Hymns and Music Songs Singing Liturgical Texts Some Practicalities Choosing Music
Brief History of Biblical Foundations Books of Chronicles 1 Chronicles 15.28, 16.42, 2 Chronicles 7.6, [28] So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouting, to the sound of the horn, trumpets, and cymbals, and made loud music on harps and lyres. [42] Heman and Jeduthun had with them trumpets and cymbals for the music, and instruments for sacred song. [6] The priests stood at their posts; the Levites also, with the instruments for music to the LORD that King David had made for giving thanks to the LORD for his steadfast love endures forever whenever David offered praises by their ministry. Opposite them the priests sounded trumpets; and all Israel stood. [25] He stationed the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, harps, and lyres, according to the commandment of David and of Gad the king's seer and of the prophet Nathan, for the commandment was from the LORD through his prophets. [26] The Levites stood with the instruments of David, and the priests with the trumpets. [27] Then Hezekiah commanded that the burnt offering be offered on the altar. When the burnt offering began, the song to the LORD began also, and the trumpets, accompanied by the instruments of King David of Israel. [28] The whole assembly worshiped, the singers sang, and the trumpeters sounded; all this continued until the burnt offering was finished. [29]
Brief History of Biblical Foundations Ephesians 5.19 Colossians 3.16 [19] Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, [20] giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. [16] Let the word of Christ * dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. *
Biblical Foundations Psalms Brief History of List the instruments and postures mentioned in Psalms 47, 81, 95, 98 and 150. Then make a list of the instruments and postures used in your normal main Sunday service. Compare the two lists and discuss. Psalm 98 [98:1] O sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things. His right hand and his holy arm have gotten him victory. [4] Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises. [5] Sing praises to the LORD with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody. [6] With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the LORD. [7] Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who live in it. [8] Let the floods clap their hands; let the hills sing together for joy [9] at the presence of the LORD, for he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity. Psalm 150 Praise for God's Surpassing Greatness [150:1] Praise the LORD! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty firmament! * [2] Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his surpassing greatness! [3] Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! [4] Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! [5] Praise him with clanging cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! [6] Let everything that breathes praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!
Brief History of Plainsong Plainsong or Plainchant dominated Christian Worship between AD 400 to AD Unaccompanied musical phrases sung in free speech-like rhythm. (Pope Gregory )
Brief History of Anglican Chant MY soul doth magnify the Lord, * and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. After the Reformation in England plainsong adapted through introduction of harmony and more rigid framework known as Anglican Chant method of singing psalms & canticles For he hath regarded * the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth * all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me; * and holy is his Name.
Brief History of Development of Hymns Continental Europe during reformation Lutherans adapted melodies in to Chorales (hymn-like compositions) and to write words for them in native language rather than Latin! Chorales arranged to more rigid pattern of syllables (called a metre) and often had rhyming lines. (e.g O Sacred head sore wounded) Calvin & followers set versions of psalms to fixed metres (metrical psalms) e.g All people that on earth do dwell The Old Hundreth, The Lord s my shepherd Crimmond C18th new hymns produced by non conformists Isaac Watts & Charles Wesley (wrote 6000+) Hymn singing became characteristic music used in Protestant Worship Hymns Ancient & Modern (1861) Various hymn books published since!
Brief History of Development of Hymns
Hymns and Music Songs Similarities What they do! They UNITE WORSHIPPERS fosters sense of belonging/team spirit cf football They EXPRESS CHRISTIAN TEACHING in memorable way (when sung) They CONTRIBUTE to the MOOD of Worship can evoke various moods through melody/harmony/rhythms/dynamic contrasts etc They help pick up the SEASONAL or THEMATIC EMPHASIS can help give coherence They assist the THEOLOGICAL, DEVOTIONAL and/or PRACTICAL FLOW from one part of the service to another e.g. preparation for prayer. They can help us to express FEELINGS and EMOTIONS in a deeper way than words alone Which of the above uses of hymns and worship songs do you think is most important and why?
Hymns and Music Songs How they differ! HYMNS Sung about God? Doctrinal & cerebral Several verses logical progression Lasting Classical music roots Harmony driven Assumes organ SONGS Sung to God? Emotive little theological content One simple theme often repeated of the moment Black Gospel/Jazz/Rock roots Rhythm driven assumes improvisation What are the strengths & weaknesses of the two types of composition? Which do you prefer to sing and why?

Singing Liturgical Texts Hymns & Songs one opportunity to use music! Liturgical texts/words can also be sung In Church of England worship hymns used as optional and additional elements inserted into a spoken liturgy In Free Church service hymns themselves are the building blocks of the worship with other elements inserted between them (readings/prayers) In modern Roman Catholic worship (and now increasingly with Anglican worship also) music not something which happens between items of liturgy but as a way of enhancing those elements
Singing Liturgical Texts
Singing Liturgical Texts For example at the EUCHARIST there is a tradition of singing The Kyrie eleison The Gloria (with easy refrain - e.g. The Thorne Mass Setting) The Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy) The Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) Gospel Acclamations (e.g. Celtic Alleluia s) Responses before and after the Gospel reading The Eucharistic Acclamations Christ has died. Bishop David used to sing the Collect and the whole Eucharistic Prayer!
Index from COME ALL YOU PEOPLE Shorter Songs for Worship John L. Bell (Iona Community) Singing Liturgical Texts or using music liturgically Taize & Iona chants, Margaret Rizza Chants and numerous other sources (hymns & worship songs too!) can be used in Non Eucharistic worship
Singing Liturgical Texts or using music liturgically An example! Handout Order of Service Handout Music
Some Practicalities Choosing Music Hymns & Songs Questions to ask when choosing appropriate music Seasonal / Theme - How does this fit into the season / overall theme of the service, or the readings? Biblical is it/does it need to underline a point in the reading(s) Liturgical - Appropriateness for a particular moment in the service - How does it fit into the shape of the service, e.g. is it suitable for the gathering, or the offertory, or a prayerful response? Mood - Is this appropriate at this point? How does the music fit with the overall style of the service, e.g. is it a celebratory Eucharist or a meditative Evening Prayer? Length - How much time do you wish this hymn/song to take up? Is it long enough for the action that is taking place? Variety - Taking all the music in a service together, are too many items similar? Novelty - Old favourites versus learning new stuff. Is the music well known to the congregation, or does it need to be introduced to them first? Resources - What resources do we have? What is achievable by our musicians and congregation?
