Volume 12, Issue 1 Page 1 March 25, 2018 Spring Edition St. Timothy s News A WORD FROM ANDREA Dear Friends, The first day of spring has now come and gone. Each day I look with hope, expecting to find fresh green pushing its way through the drab wintered earth. Most of the time, it still looks rather bleak and dull. Each year, around this time, if I look closely, I see little hints of new life and a slight changing in the colour of the lawn. I m always looking for the little sprouts of crocus coming up through the dead leaves. It almost feels like the earth is straining, trying to draw forth new life from within it. It s just a matter of time before warmth and moisture provide the right conditions for change and growth. This process of the earth s greening after a long winter reminds me of what some call our spiritual eastering, the inner transformation and rebirthing that comes after we ve had a long winter spell of the spirit. The dead, brown grass is there for eons in our hearts, or so it seems. No amount of hurry, or push, or desire can make the green happen any sooner. Dolls for Cuba See Page 6 I think of people in our church family who are longing for an inner greening, and are yet in the throes of a spiritual winter: a woman who struggles with the anger and hurt within her heart; a man who is entering a new career in midlife and fears his ability to cope with the challenges it requires; a volunteer whose husband who is working overseas; a man who has fallen into deep, clinical depression who is living through each day with meagre energy. Each one of us needs an eastering, a bright greening, and oh, how we long for it to come soon. But it may be a painstakingly slow process, a tiny bit of life gradually weaving through the pain and questions. Eastering isn t always a quick step out of the tomb. Sometimes rising from the dead takes a long, slowly greening time. It can t be hurried. This spring we will embark upon a new adventure - a time of eastering within our parish. In April, we will start the Growing Healthy Stewards program that we discussed at Vestry. Growing Healthy Stewards is a year-round stewardship education program that focuses not just on finances and proportional giving, but on one s whole sense of stewardship - including talents, gifts, and time. Once our Stewardship Committee is organized, the Diocese will send us a coach who will have a proven track record of leading stewardship within his or her own parish.

Volume 12, Issue 1 Page 2 March 25, 2018 One important aspect of the program is that each component has been tried by parishes in our very own diocese. Over the past ten years, more than 100 parishes have used various parts of the program. Based on their feedback, the material has been revised and collected into one manual for our use. The program has proven to give parishioners more confidence to talk about giving and a deeper understanding of the church s mission. The program helps the church set realistic and tangible goals and then work towards them in an intentional way. As some have said, the program inspires vision. While this is going to be a big commitment for us, we know that anything worthwhile requires a commitment! It is my hope for you this Easter season that you will trust the resurrection of your spirit and believe that joy and new life will come for you, even though it may not be there right now. If your soul sings with happy alleluias this Easter, may you turn often to those who are still awaiting their greening and walk hopefully with them. Every blessing of Easter! Andrea+ A WORD FROM ANDREA (Cont.) WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT In one of my " Daily Devotions", I came across this very encouraging verse for Christians to apply to daily living. Psalm 37:4 "Delight yourself in the Lord And He will give you the desires of your heart." When the Old Testament uses the word "heart", it is not just describing the physical organ that pumps blood through your body. As in English, the Hebrew concept of "heart" encompasses both the physical organ and a person's inner yearnings. To delight in the Lord, we must know Him better. Knowledge of God's great love for us will indeed give us delight. When we are walking with Jesus Christ in a surrendered relationship and our hearts have been purified by His truth and love, then the desires of our heart will be godly desires. In fact, when we are walking in a close relationship with the Lord, He will inspire us with dreams and desires that are from Him. 3 Volume 12, Issue 1 Page 3 March 25, 2018 MUSIC Rediscovering Shorter Songs At St. Timothy s, we embrace a wide variety of the rich traditions of musical worship, from the psalms of David to modern hymns composed by contemporary songwriters. During Holy Week, we re going to be rediscovering a particular musical form called Shorter Songs, made popular by two contemporary religious communities, the Taizé Community in France and the Iona Community in Scotland. Some of us participated in our first experiment with this form of singing during a midweek service in Advent. The idea is to lift our heads out of hymn books and away from songsheets. Instead, we focus on experiencing the music and meditating on the deeper meaning of the words. The concept is not new: think of the ancient prayer Kyrie eleison. The words are few and simple: Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison (in English: Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy). The musical settings available range from simple to elaborate. The phrases can be repeated, three times, nine times, or more. That s exactly how Shorter Songs work. Look at the words, quickly commit them to memory, and then sing repeat as necessary. Taizé (pronounced tay-zay ) is a small village, population 184, about an hour s drive north of Lyon in east-central France, yet the larger of its two churches can accommodate six thousand people. It s become a destination for pilgrims seeking a spiritual experience. Religious travel author Lori Erikson wanders the world searching for holy sites. She describes Taizé as one of the most significant pilgrimage sites she s ever visited and she was especially moved by the music. Because Taizé songs have so few words and are repeated multiple times, it s easy to sing them even if you don t speak the language or aren t particularly musical, she writes. While Scotland s Iona Community has a pedigree tracing all the way back to St. Columba in the 6th century and includes Iona Abbey as one of its sites, it s headquartered in Glasgow and refers to itself as a dispersed Christian ecumenical community. Church of Scotland minister John Lamberton Bell is the most prolific writer of Short Songs in the Iona tradition. Do not imagine that these songs were written by the monks on Iona. There have been no monks on Iona for over 400 years. And though these songs are sung in the Abbey on Iona, they originated in an overcrowded living room next to one of the most heavily polluted arterial roads in Glasgow. Anyone who can hear the waves lapping on the Sound of Mull when singing these songs should be referred to a specialist, Bell writes, tongue firmly planted in cheek. In the Taizé Community, the emphasis is on thoughtful reflection and introspection. Singing is one of the most essential elements of worship, explains the Taizé introduction to meditative singing. As the words are sung over many times, this reality gradually penetrates the whole being. Meditative singing thus becomes a way of listening to God. Bell points out other advantages, too, [Shorter Songs] have been of tremendous advantage in enabling people to move in worship, whether to light a candle, present an offering, or move out of the church together. Such things can t happen easily if worshipers are clutching a book. Jonathan Kay, Music Director

Volume 12, Issue 1 Page 4 March 25, 2018 READING OUR BIBLES What Did Jesus Really Say When He Taught Us To Pray? Everyone has their favourite version of the Lord s Prayer that speaks to their memories, their hearts, and their relationship with the Lord. The words, even the length of the prayer, are often different but the prayerful meaning does not change. So, let s start with what and how Jesus taught. When he spoke with his disciples, he spoke Aramaic. For centuries this ancient language was the common language through much of western Asia and also Egypt. e.g. In Isaiah 36:11 Jewish officials asked the representative of King Sennacherib of Assyria to speak with them in Aramaic. Later, when Matthew and Luke wrote their gospels they translated Aramaic into Greek, the written language of our New Testament. Just for fun let s have a look at what our Father in heaven looks and sounds like in Aramaic and Greek. (Try saying the sounds like words.) Aramaic Greek Looks Like ןובא אימשבד Πάτερ ἡμῶν ὁ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς Translates To Heaven in who our father father of us who (is) in the heavens Sounds Like abun dbashmaya pater hémōn hō en tois ooranois How did Matthew and Luke translate the Lord s Prayer? (from the NRSV Bible) Matthew 6:9-13 Luke 11:2-4 Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we also have have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us to the time of trial. us from the evil one. You might enjoy praying the following lovely version of the Lord s Prayer from another old language (Syriac). Our heavenly Father, hallowed is your name. Your Kingdom come. Your will is done, as in heaven so also on earth. Give us the bread of our daily need. And leave us serene, just as we also allowed others serenity. And do not pass us through trial, except separate us from the evil one. For yours is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory to the end of the universe, of all the universe. Amen Rev. Kathy Buligan

Leacock, Deputy Rector s Warden: Anne Baillargeon People s Warden: Barry Applewhite, Deputy People s Warden: Wellington Phoa FAST FRIARS Our annual Men's Club Breakfast is always a huge success. This year, 22 members attended and shared in fellowship, stories, and were offered personal safety information. The Friars have been an integral part of St. Timothy s for almost 50 years. The Men s Club brings the men of parish together to share their beliefs, foster fellowship, and sponsor activities within the parish. The executive committee meets once a month to plan and implement a variety of events for the men of the parish. All male members of the parish, over the age of 19 are automatically Fast Friar Men's Club members and are welcome to attend any event. If you have any questions, would like to volunteer or have suggestions for an event or speaker, please contact an executive member or send an with your contact information to davidblizzard1009@gmail.com. 6 Volume 12, Issue 1 Page 6 March 25, 2018 CRAFT CLUB 415 Dolls to Cuba The Craft Club meets on Tuesday mornings in the front room of Lamont Hall to enjoy fellowship as we work together on craft items to sell at the Christmas sale, or to give as outreach items. Everyone is welcome to join us. If you re interested in knitting, sewing, or any type of crafting, you ll fit right in. If you ve visited us since the beginning of January, you ll have seen fingers flying and heard the click of busy knitting needles, to the accompaniment of much friendly chatting. We re currently working on an outreach project through which we plan to send 300 knit comfort dolls to Cuba in early April. The Rev. Chris Micks, a minister in the Pentecostal Church and the son of Doris and Bob Micks, has been going on mission trips to Cuba for four years. During his 2018 trip, he will be holding a session at which he expects 300 children to be in attendance. He asked his mom to make some dolls for him to give to the children, and when it was suggested that the Craft Club might help producing the dolls, this met with an enthusiastic response. We produced a total of 415 dolls more than what Chris hoped for and trust they will be a welcome gift to these children who have very little. We all want to express our thanks to Nora Gibson, who has been on the Craft Club s leadership team for many years. She continues to attend on Tuesdays and participate fully in our activities, but is happy to be without her former load of responsibility. Ann Aubrey and Marge Gartner remain in their positions as decision makers for the group with Mary Moriah looking after our finances. We look forward to continuing to work with together. Ann Aubrey, Marge Gartner, Mary Moriah HEALTH & SAFETY Because of the resignations and departures of some committee members, Health & Safety is looking for new members. We meet every second month on the second Tuesday at 7.00p.m. Please contact a current committee member: Cyril Singh, George Patten, Erwin Harris, Susan Frederick, Soniya Thomas, Paul George or Wellington Phoa, if you wish to be involved. The EpiPen Junior has been replaced and is good for another year until March A training session for Fire Wardens is planned for middle-to-late If you would like to become a Fire Warden, please register on its sign-up sheet on the bulletin board. Duties will include: helping parishioners to safety through the designated exit doors and assembling them in the Emergency Safety Area; assisting physically-challenged parishioners and ensuring there is no one left in the building. 7 Volume 12, Issue 1 Page 7 March 25, 2018 BELLES Women s fellowship group at a critical crossroads annual event is Ringing in Christmas. The luncheon and bazaar are always well attended and well supported by the people of St. Timothy s. In fact, the 2017 event raised more than $4,000 for the church. The Belles, St. Timothy s women s group, is in immediate need of volunteers to step up into leadership positions. After years of faithful service, several members of the Belles Planning Committee and the executive have stepped down. We have lost our longtime treasurer and secretary, and our current Chair will be leaving in June. At the same time, several members have announced their intentions to step down. While we are very grateful for their dedication and wish them all the best for their future endeavours, these departures cast an uncertain future. The Belles work to support the congregation and the church while enjoying fun and fellowship. Past initiatives have included dinners, guest speakers, bus trips, and special social events. The largest If you re a woman in the parish who wishes to contribute time, energy, and leadership to this most worthy cause, now is the time. Please don t let this venerable legacy fade away. This is the time for the women of St. Timothy s to decide what the future holds for them and for our beloved Belles. Please reach out to Peggy Perkins if you re interested in getting involved. The Belles have planned two bus trips this summer. The June 20 trip to Stratford to see The Music Man is sold out. Tickets are available for August 11 trip to Kingston for a 1000 Islands Cruise. 9 Volume 12, Issue 1 Page 9 March 25, 2018 WORKSHOP As a result of the advertisement placed in the Anglican Journal to drum up business, the editor happened to see it and thought the shop would make an interesting article for the paper. It was an exciting time as we put together some photos of our work and they sent out a photographer to take some pictures in the shop. Pictures courtesy of Michael Hudson/The Anglican Needless to say, it was a lot of fun for us and we made some good contacts at the paper. A professional write-up of our activities sure makes a difference. Now for a small advertisement - we have repaired a number of chairs lately as there does not seem to be anyone else nearby doing this type of work at a reasonable price. Most of the chairs are antiques and are family keepsakes. The cost usually runs about $135. to $150. for the seat section. Attached is a picture of a chair recently completed. 10 Volume 12, Issue 1 Page 10 March 25, 2018 HOT LUNCH MINISTRY Celebrating 10 Years It s 1 a.m. The temperature outside is -14º c, with a lot of snow and cruel winds. A fellow is curled up in a sleeping bag under the staircase of an apartment building, where it isn t much warmer than outside. He is cold and worried that he will soon be put out to face the weather. He thinks for a moment about his buddy, wondering if he has survived this brutally cold night, sleeping in an old van. As daylight comes, he gets up, puts on his backpack, and wanders outside. He is hoping that walking will warm him up. Just weeks ago, he lost his job. Meanwhile, the chef at Agincourt Community Services Association (ACSA) is preparing lunch for about 80 needy people. It will soon be delivered to our church. Our fellow is waiting for 11:30 a.m. He is hungry and looking forward to a delicious hot meal. That is where St. Tim s comes in. By 11:15 a.m., fifteen or more volunteers have gathered downstairs in the church kitchen. They begin with prayer and are then ready to serve a nutritious lunch to guests filing into Walker Hall. But most important of all, the volunteers, often along with Rev. Andrea, will offer caring conversation and fellowship. Volunteers know that they cannot fix lives that may have been broken. But in some small way each Thursday, they can make a difference. By 1:00 p.m. guests will have gone out to brave the elements once again. Having served guests, our volunteers are weary, but most grateful for the opportunity to care for those in need, as Jesus has taught us to do. Barbara Broadbent, Janet Trim

Volume 12, Issue 1 Page 11 March 25, 2018 Fundraising over the years not only generated funds but also played a vital role in fellowship. Going down memory lane, various committees demonstrated strong leadership with the help of their members by hosting events such as a church-wide fun fair with foods of different cultures, tea /beer garden, corn roast with an auction, concerts, Caribbean dinner/dance, comedy, salsa dancing, fashion shows, many trips, and the list continues. But during those times, although it was hard work, people were dedicated, because it resulted in fun, laughter, prosperity, and accommodated the needs of all ages. Over the years, we ve seen a decline in getting help or being able to continue committees. All with with good reason: aging, sickness, retirement, moving... The younger people are the generation of the church of tomorrow. They have good ideas if given the chance, so I often wonder if a focus should be placed on recruiting some of them to pass the torch for those committees. FUNDRAISING Three years ago, after discussion regarding the status of the various committees, it was decided by Corporation to form a Fundraising Committee. This committee that would work with smaller groups were to host large events at outside venues 2-3 times a year. These events should not only appeal to the parishioners but also will attract others. Based on the last two Mystery Dinners at Peter Paul & Rembrandt and the wonderful cast of the Scarborough Players, those events were a success and a lasting memory for many who commented after attending. At this moment, plans for 2018 include: host a Dinner & Dance in the spring or fall and a Fun Fair in the summer. Volunteers are always welcome. Please use the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board if you are interested. Pearl Chandler NEWSLETTER COMMITTEE Changes in the parish and in the church leadership require changes in our newsletter. To go forward one must reflect on the original goals and purpose of the Newsletter: to inform; to educate; and to inspire. The editors have made changes in format that will make the copy easier and more enjoyable to read. Although we have reduced our costs by printing in-house, decreasing the number of issues per year, and stopped mailing out issues, costs can be reduced even further if those who are on-line put their names on the list (see Danielle), or by go to the website ( to read onscreen or to download a copy. For those who do not have computer access, a few hard copies will be available. We appreciate your ongoing contributions and look forward to hearing from some new contributors in this year. We welcome the addition of Peg Cassidy Kay as a member of the editorial committee. She will be an inspirational and skilled contributor. Thank you to Les Birmingham, Ron Benson, Wellington Phoa, Shauna Van Hoof, for your many hours of work and patience in the production of the past year s issues. Peggy Perkins

Volume 12, Issue 1 Page 12 March 25, 2018 YOUTH & CHILDREN Summer Camp Just sit right back and you ll hear a tale, the tale of a fateful trip The story of Gilligan s Island is a shipwreck tale told for laughs, and there certainly are plenty of laughs. For many years growing up, it was my after-school TV show and I yearned, along with the castaways, for their rescue which, after nearly 100 episodes, did happen. However, they discovered that the world had moved on in their absence and then, on a reunion cruise, found themselves marooned back on the same island. Being shipwrecked sounds like fun when we think of it in Gilligan s Island terms, but in reality it is a rather terrifying predicament when one desperately needs to be rescued. Metaphorically, we have all been shipwrecked on the shores of sin and are desperately in need of rescue. But, thanks be to God, He has rescued us in the person of Jesus! Shipwrecked Rescued by Jesus! is our theme for summer camp this year. There will doubtless be plenty of Gilligan s Island-type fun, but at the core will be the rescue mission of Jesus. Plans are already well underway and registration is open as of April 1, so please keep camp and the families of our campers in your prayers. 13 Volume 12, Issue 1 Page 13 March 25, 2018 Q & A Why do we celebrate the peace in the middle of the service? Each Sunday at St. Timothy s, and indeed, in all Anglican Churches, people take part in a practice called the passing of the peace. The Peace is sandwiched between the liturgy of the Word (the Scripture readings, sermon, and prayers) and the liturgy of the Eucharist. For Anglo-Catholic churches and cathedrals, this time is brief, with people greeting those around them with the simple words peace be with you. In more informal or liturgically lower churches, this time may take up to five minutes, with each person making sure they greet everyone in the congregation. Whatever shape this takes, the theme of peace is central to the liturgy. While the passing of the peace has become a time of greeting and fellowship in many churches, the theological significance of these moments extends beyond handshakes and hugs. Within Anglican services, the passing of the peace comes immediately after a time of corporate confession and absolution. At St. Timothy s, we confess our sins to God and corporately cry out for mercy together. The Priest then declares God s word of forgiveness over the congregation. The community has peace with God, but we have yet to attain peace with one another. Having made peace with God, the congregation is now instructed to reconcile with each other before taking communion together. The Table of the Lord is not a meal eaten among enemies but among family and friends. Because of this, the passing of the peace is not a nicety or passive moment; it is a bold act of declaring our reconciliation as children of God. Why are there no longer memorial flowers on the altars? For many years, the Altar Guild provided a flower ministry. Each week, money for flowers was collected and donated to the church to purchase flowers, make floral arrangements, and then prepare the arrangements to be delivered to those who were sick or in need. Over the past couple of years, several challenges have surfaced and the committee decided that to be able to sustain the honour, dignity, and integrity of this ministry, a procedural change was needed. With the current expectation for the Greening of Worship Space in churches, the timing couldn t have been better for making a change in the process and moving forward in a more eco-friendly manner. We are delighted to tell you about the plan that has very recently been put in place. Parishioners who have chosen to beautify the church with flowers and plants have made one annual donation that replaces the weekly and festival donations. The name of each participant will be on the donor list that will be on display on the Narthex wall all year long. A year from now, this new approach will be assessed and appropriate modifications will be made. We are very pleased with the new arrangement and we appreciate and thank you for your support and encouragement. Sheila Martin This is not always easy. Healing wounds, hurts, and broken relationships is a difficult task, but with God s help we are asked to seek out healing and reconcile with our family (God s family.) And each time we make peace with each other, we point to that triumph of love. Not only have we been reconciled to God; we have been reconciled to each other. Rev. Andrea

Volume 12, Issue 1 Page 14 March 25, 2018 Q & A (Continued) Why do we have two different versions of the Lord s Prayer? There are actually many versions of the Lord s Prayer. At St. Timothy s we use two versions. Some prefer the traditional wording and style of language of the 1661 Book of Common Prayer. Some prefer the more contemporary wording and style of language. Both versions are theologically sound and bring us into closer communion with God. We use both versions to respect the views and preferences of our diverse congregation. A look at just one aspect of the Lord s Prayer gives us an idea of how different versions come about. The doxology we say at the end of the prayer, for thine is the kingdom, is not found in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. However, the Bible sometimes finishes a prayer with a hymn-like verse or two praising God. A good example is the ending of David s prayer in 1 Chronicles 29: In the early church, as early as the first century CE (Common Era), Christians in the eastern half of the Roman Empire added the doxology when reciting the prayer. Greek scribes sometimes added the doxology to the original Gospel wording. DID YOU KNOW?? The English wording also has a long tradition. Henry VIII, for example, decreed a version that did not include the doxology. In the reign of Elizabeth I, the Lord s Prayer was changed to include it. Even though the doxology is not in the Lord s Prayer in Matthew and Luke Gospels, it is theologically sound because it praises God. It is biblical and it has a long tradition in worship. It is a matter of choice. The one who includes the doxology is fine. The one who does not is fine. Rev. Kathy Buligan Seven members of our parish take time every week to pray for you. Every Thursday, the Cyber Prayer Group receives petitions and prayer requests from the Incumbent to pray on behalf of parishioners and the homeless in our community; for staff requests for visioning, stewardship, and planning; to offer thanksgiving for all the prayers that have been answered by God. This group of parishioners takes this task very seriously. They are passionate about God and about the health of St. Timothy s. Please remember to give God thanks for these faithful individuals in your daily prayers!

Volume 12, Issue 1 Page 15 March 25, 2018 A POINT OF VIEW. When you give do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing (Matthew 6:3). There are some people who only do good when it can be seen. Their goal is to be recognized for their generosity. But where is the reward for efforts done for the sake of recognition? They are left right here on earth, where they occur. Jesus makes clear that those who seek recognition get their reward here, not in heaven. Their reward is the praise of other people, and the gain of power. Those who give out of a desire to be recognized i.e. having our names listed on plaques and on furniture, or mentioned in services etc., are really seeking popularity. And popularity is a tool of power, earning people the respect of peers and their local community. For Jesus, it s all about intent. Our guiding principle should be giving privately. While we will at times make exceptions to the principle, we must only make exceptions for the sake of God s glory and ministry. It must have a larger purpose and intent in mind. And we must continue to glorify God whenever recognition comes. We must also trust God with our giving - and that might mean giving where it is needed, not where we would necessarily like it to go. We must trust God with our donation to his ministry. We must watch the intent of our heart and make sure we are in a place of generosity. We must give out of a desire to do good for others and to glorify God in the process. This is Jesus way. J O H N B A R R Y, A U T H O R C E O, P R E S I D E N T A N D F O U N D E R O F J E S U S E C O N O M Y We need to ask ourselves: Why are we giving? When we expose our giving to others, why do we do so? Are we seeking God s glory or our own?
