Please maintain a respectful and meditative quiet throughout the service, except of course when congregational participation is invited. * Indicates all who are able may stand THE GATHERING *SOLEMN PROCESSION (all who are able please rise) *SENTENCES Quinn G. Caldwell One: Hear the promises of God: God is near to all who call, who call from their hearts. Many: The desires of those who fear God are fulfilled; their cries are heard; they are saved. One: I am the resurrection and the life; all who believe in me, though they die, yet shall they live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Many: When we were baptized into Christ Jesus, we were baptized into Christ s death. One: If we have been united with Christ in a death like Christ s, we shall certainly be united with Christ in a resurrection like Christ s. Many: Blessed are the dead who die in Christ. Blessed indeed, says the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!

2 INTROIT Cantique de Jean Racine Gabriel Fauré O Redeemer divine, our sole hope of salvation, Eternal light of the earth and the sky, We kneel in adoration. O Savior, turn on us thy loving eye! Send down on us the fire of thy grace all-consuming, Whose wondrous might dispersed the powers of hell. And rouse our slumbering souls with thy radiance, That they may waken thy mercy to tell. O Christ, bestow thy blessing on us, we implore thee, Who here are gathered on penitent knee. Accept the hymns we chant to thine eternal glory And these thy gifts we return unto thee! Translation by Harold Heiberg *HYMN For All the Saints (vv. 1 & 2) Sine Nomine *GREETING One: Many: Used by permission, CCLI License # The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. *A SIGN OF OUR UNITY AND RECONCILIATION We invite you to greet those around you, wishing them Christ s peace. 2

3 WORDS OF WELCOME Children and teachers are invited to leave for Church School classes. REQUIEM, OP. 48 Gabriel Fauré Introit and Kyrie Rest eternal grant them, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine on them. To thee praise is due, O God, in Zion, and to thee vows are recited in Jerusalem. Hear my prayer; unto thee all flesh shall come. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Offertory Fauré Rob Woodin, baritone Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls of the dead from punishment in the inferno, and from the infernal lake. Deliver them from the mouth of the lion, lest the abyss swallow them up, lest they fall into the darkness. Sacrifices and prayers to thee, O Lord, we offer with praise. O, receive the souls of those whom today we commemorate. Make them, O Lord, to pass from death to life, as thou of old hast promised Abraham and his seed. REFLECTION Porters All Nancy S. 5 THE 23 RD PSALM The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. Pie Jesu Amanda Shu, treble Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest, rest everlasting. GIVING WITNESS TO FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP CALL TO THE OFFERING Fauré Erin Hull Jack Davidson OFFERTORY ANTHEM Agnus Dei Fauré Lamb of God, who taketh away the sins of the world, grant them rest everlasting. Let light eternal shine on them, O Lord, with thy saints forever, for thou art merciful. Rest eternal grant them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine on them. PRAYER OF DEDICATION Libera Me Fauré Nathan Keoughan, bass Deliver me, O Lord, from eternal death, on that fearful day when the heavens are moved and the earth shall shake, when thou shall come to judge the world through fire. I am made to tremble, and I fear, when the desolation shall come, and also the coming wrath that day, the day of wrath, calamity and misery, that terrible and exceedingly bitter day. Rest eternal grant them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine on them. 5

10 NOTES ON TODAY S MUSIC All Saints Day is a solemnity celebrated on November 1 st in Western Christianity in honor of all the saints, known and unknown, commemorating those who have attained the beatific vision of heaven. Today at Old South Church we mark the observance by remembering our own beloved dead. The Requiem is a liturgical service for the repose of the souls of the deceased. It is notable for the large number of musical compositions that it has inspired, including the requiems of Mozart, Verdi, Brahms, Berlioz and Duruflé. The first known musical setting of the requiem dates from circa 1470, and was penned by the Franco-Flemish composer Johannes Ockeghem. Originally, such compositions were meant to be performed in liturgical service; eventually however, the dramatic character of the text began to appeal to composers to an extent that made the requiem a genre of its own, and today such compositions have been taken out of their sacred context and have become a perennial favorite of the concert stage. On this All Saints Sunday we will reclaim the ancient practice of presenting a composed requiem in the context of a service that will include a ritual remembering of all those who rejoice with us, but from a farther shore, and in a greater light, and with whom we are one in Jesus Christ. Of all the many requiem settings of the past several hundred years, perhaps the most enduring is the one written in 1888 by the Parisian composer Gabriel Fauré ( ). It is almost childlike in its peacefulness and serenity and elegant and subtle musical language. As it is devoid of the terrifying Dies Irae and Tuba Mirum movements found in the much larger-scale masterpieces of Mozart, Verdi, Berlioz and Duruflé, it has often been described as a requiem without the Last Judgment. Yet it is this very gentle and unassuming quality of understatement which contributes so eloquently to the work s universal appeal. Fauré created three orchestral versions of the work. The second one, which was premiered at the Church of the Madeleine in Paris in 1893, will be performed in this service. Known today as the chamber orchestra version (as reconstructed by John Rutter in 1983), it consists of strings, harp, organ, French horns and timpani. Harry L. Huff, Minister of Music 10

CHRISTIAN STEWARDSHIP The reformer John Calvin was a prolific writer, preacher and Biblical commentator. He made an astute commentary on Jeremiah 22:16 that says in part God is known where humanity is cared for. The stewardship campaign theme for this year is "Generations of Generosity. The reason we are called to be generous and supportive of any church is because it is a place where we come to know God and make God known to others. In both cases we do this by caring for each other inside and outside the church. Inside the church we preach words of hope and inspiration that guide our actions outside the church walls. Outside we work to feed the needy, take care of the sick and work for a more just and humane world. We should never give to the church merely to keep the lights on for God is not interested in that. God does want us to give so we can care for each other and receive care ourselves so we can better know our Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer.
