January 22, 2012 Third Sunday after Epiphany 11:00 am Welcome! Thank you for turning off cell phones, pagers and beepers, and for refraining from using flash photography. Please maintain a respectful and meditative quiet throughout the service, except of course when congregational participation is invited. THE GATHERING PRELUDE Through Palestine, op. 131 R. Deane Shure #1 By the Pool of Bethesda #2 The Sea of Galilee *HYMN 71 Rejoice, You Pure in Heart Vineyard Haven *CALL TO WORSHIP Ron L. Buford One: One: One: O God, you broke down the barriers when you crept in beside us. For in Jesus, your hands touched all, and touched us. You opened our eyes, to see how the hands of the rich were empty, and the hearts of the poor were full. You took the widow s mite, the child s loaves, the babe at the breast and used them to show us the Kingdom. * Indicates all who are able may stand

One: One: You gave us hands to hold, black and white, African and Asian, the clasping hands of lovers and the reluctant hands of those who don t believe they are worth holding. And when we wanted to shake our fists, you still wanted to hold our hands. Here in the company of the neighbor whom we know and the stranger in our midst, and the self from whom we turn, we ask to love as Jesus loved. Make this the place and time, good Lord, when heaven and earth become one, and we in word and flesh know ourselves beloved. Amen. *A SIGN OF OUR UNITY AND RECONCILIATION Please greet those around you, wishing them peace or the peace of Christ. WORDS OF WELCOME ANTHEM Fisherman Peter South Carolina Spiritual arr. Robert J. Powell Fisherman Peter, on the sea; drop your net, boy, and follow me. Traditional THE GIFT OF THE WORD SCRIPTURE Mark 1:14-20 Kevin Ard One: Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news. One: As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, Follow me and I will make you fish for people. 2

One: One: And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. A reading from the Word of God. Thanks be to God. *HYMN 173 You Have Come Down to the Lakeshore Pescador de Hombres vv. 3-4 (Children and teachers may leave for their Church School classes.) SERMON Fishing Nancy S. Taylor *HYMN 171 Jesus Calls Us, o er the Tumult St. Andrew OFFERING OURSELVES AND OUR GIFTS *CALL TO PRAYER One: God be with you. And also with you. One: Lift up your hearts. We lift our hearts to God. One: Let us pray. (The congregation may be seated) John M. Edgerton PASTORAL PRAYER AND SILENT PRAYER THE LORD S PRAYER (unison) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. 3

PRAYER RESPONSE Hush! Hush! Somebody s Callin My Name Spiritual, arr. Brazeal W. Dennard Hush, Hush, Somebody s callin my name. Oh, my Lord, oh, my Lord, what shall I do? I m so glad that trouble don t last always. I m so glad I got my ligion in time. Soon one mornin death come creepin in my room. Traditional CALL TO THE OFFERING Brent Damrow In thanksgiving to God and giving witness to generous hearts, our financial gifts support ministries of mercy and justice. OFFERTORY ANTHEM Lord, Speak to Me Calvin Hampton Rebecca O Brien, soloist; Erik K. Gustafson, piano Lord, speak to me that I may speak In living echoes of Thy tone; As Thou has sought, so let me seek Thy erring children lost and lone. O lead me, Lord, that I may lead The wandering and the wavering feet; O feed me, Lord, that I may feed Thy hungering ones with manna sweet. O strengthen me, that while I stand Firm on the rock, and strong in Thee, I may stretch out a loving hand To wrestlers in the troubled sea. O teach me, Lord, that I may teach The precious things Thou dost impart; And wing my words, that they may reach The hidden depths of many a heart. O use me, Lord, use even me, Just as Thou wilt, and when and where, Until Thy blessed face I see, Thy rest, Thy joy, Thy glory share. Amen. Frances Havergal, 1872 PRAYER OF DEDICATION 4

The FISH is among the oldest symbols of Christianity During their persecution by the Roman Empire in the first few centuries CE, Christians used the Detail from a Moorish lamp in our Children s Chapel fish as a symbol to mark meeting places and tombs, or to distinguish friends from foes: when a Christian met a stranger in the road, the Christian sometimes drew one arc of the simple fish outline in the dirt. If the stranger drew the other arc, both believers knew they were in good company. Christianity Today, Oct 26, 2001 FISH IN THE GOSPELS Funerary stele. Marble, early 3rd c. from the area of the Vatican necropolis, Rome. Some of the Apostles were fishermen. Jesus called them to fish for people. He produced the miracle of the great catch, cooked a breakfast of fish for his followers, multiplied a few loaves and fishes to feed thousands, and compared the Last Judgment to a fisherman sorting fish. 6

NOTES ON TODAY S MUSIC On this third Sunday after Epiphany, water imagery is prevalent throughout the service. In the Scripture reading today, we hear of Jesus walking along the Sea of Galilee, calling the fishermen Simon, Peter, and his brother, Andrew, to be his disciples. The hymns You Have Come Down to the Shoreline, Jesus Calls Us, o er the Tumult and You Walk along Our Shoreline vividly depict the scene as Jesus began assembling followers to help launch his ministry. The prelude consists of two Impressionistic sketches of watery scenes from 1925 by R. Deane Shure ( ). They are the first two movements from a suite entitled Through Palestine (Being a Little Four Day s Journey with the Master). Dr. Shure was a noted composer, organist and music educator in the Washington, D.C. area, having served as music director for Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church for many years. The postlude is an excerpt from Handel s perennial favorite, Water Music, a collection of orchestral movements that premiered on July 17, 1717 after King George I had requested a concert on the River Thames. The concert was performed by 50 musicians playing on a barge near the royal barge from which the King listened with close friends. The barges, heading for Chelsea or Lambeth, and leaving the party after midnight, used the tides of the river. George I was said to have enjoyed the suites so much that he made the exhausted musicians play them three times over the course of the outing! This transcription for organ was made in 1926 by Dr. Carl McKinley ( ), who served Old South as organist and choirmaster for several decades. The recurring biblical theme of God and Jesus calling mortals to serve is reflected in the three choral offerings today. In addition to the two traditional spirituals, Fisherman Peter and Hush! Hush! Somebody s Callin My Name, the Old South Choir will sing Calvin Hampton s jubliant setting of Frances Havergal s beloved text Lord, Speak to Me. Written in 1973, it exhibits Hampton s love for music of all genres, this one being rousing gospel songs. Especially notable are the Motown-style trio-writing in verse two, and the Mahalia Jackson-inspired solo in verses four and five. Although originally scored for organ accompaniment Harry L. Huff, Minister of Music 8

CHRISTIAN STEWARDSHIP Almost daily, I walk the streets of Boston on my way to and from work and other appointments. Along my usual routes, I have encountered the same homeless people for years. Many of these chronically homeless men and women appear to have addictions or mental health issues that may explain their long-time presence on the streets of Boston. Lately, however, with the recession and unemployment that remains high I have noticed more people asking for money. To me these new faces on the street are a daily reminder that however we choose to give now is the time for those of us with the means to help those in need. Kurt Gaertner, Stewardship Committee MUSIC CHAMBER MUSIC USIC: Sunday, January 29, 3 pm.
