Reid (b. 1923) SCRIPTURE Philippians 2:5-13 Jan Monsma On this Hymn Festival Sunday, we celebrate that even in the earliest days of the Christian church, the faithful would sing hymns as a part of their devotion. Below, the so-called Christ Hymn is drawn from Philippians 2, in which Paul quotes an apparently well-known Christian hymn. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Creator. 3

9 NOTES ON TODAY S MUSIC This is the seventh annual Hymn Festival Sunday at Old South Church. For the past six years this service has afforded the congregation the opportunity to sing a plethora of hymns in various styles and from a wide range of history. Today we will honor the work of just one man whose hymns have inspired congregations of many denominations throughout the United States for the past four decades: Calvin Hampton ( ). As this is the 30 th anniversary of his death and he would have been 75 this year, concerts of his music are taking place in churches throughout the country. He is perhaps more widely known as a composer of solo organ and choral works; however, as early as the late 1960s the renowned British hymnologist Erik Routley ( ) dubbed him the greatest living writer of hymn tunes. In the beginning, Hampton was led to create hymn tunes for existing texts as a kind of game or experiment. He felt that tunes often did not really express a text and was frustrated when attempting to encourage a choir or congregation to communicate a given text if the tune did not seem to enhance it. So experiments took place in his studio and were played for the entourage that was often around, occupied with other projects. A test of a tune: if he played it on the organ, and later discovered that one of the sextons who had been working in the church was humming it that was a success! Memorability was an important element in all music to him, but particularly in hymn tunes which, while being easily remembered, must be able to be repeated a number of times and still be interesting to hear or to sing. His serious writing of hymn tunes began in the late 1960s when a number of tunes were written and tested at Calvary Church in New York City. Thus began a major component of Calvin Hampton s compositional output. In 1980 a collection of his original tunes paired with traditional hymn texts was published in The Calvin Hampton Hymnary (G.I.A. Publications). The Foreward to that rich treasury states, This collection offers hymns and hymn anthems for an educated organist looking for unison, two-part and three-part anthems the application of a fertile imagination will reveal manifold possibilities. He died in 1984, leaving a vast canon of unpublished works, including a number of hymn tunes that were not incorporated into that collection. For some of these, Hampton himself had assigned texts and named the tunes for his friends. What remained were a few gems microcosms of ingenuity that were simply given metrical designations. It was the great joy of this executor to match new texts and dub the tunes in honor of individuals who have been instrumental in the preparation and propagation of Hampton s music posthumously. Sixteen of these were published in 2008 in The Calvin Hampton Hymnary II (Wayne Leupold Editions, Inc.). 9

10 All of the music sung today is taken from these two collections: MacDougall, detar, Pike, St. Helena, and Lukkason are from the 1980 Hymnary; Sniffin, Huff, and Henderson are from the 2008 Hymnary. The offertory anthem, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, will be sung today in its original form (with baritone and mezzosoprano soloists) as the centerpiece movement of a full cantata for chorus and orchestra entitled Live or Die: A Celebration of Life, which was commissioned in memory of gay and lesbian victims and survivors of the Holocaust. This particular movement was so tuneful that many of Hampton s friends encouraged him to turn it into a hymn tune. He obliged, naming it Huff. A Repeating Alleluia, which is sung every year in our Easter services, will also be sung today at the end of the service in its original form as a final refrain to the hymn tune Henderson, which was composed for the ordination of the Rev. Jane Henderson, a former Calvary Church Seminarian. The organ prelude, In Praise of Humanity, was originally the third selection of Hampton s Suite in Five Movements, dating from This scherzo, in a marvelously ingenious 10/16 meter, was developed in its final form in response to a commission from Rev. Ronald Miller, Pastor of Christ & St. John Lutheran Church in West New York, New Jersey, in The kaleidoscopic splashes of color resulting from the strictly notated swell box indications make this dance come to life. It first appeared in 1988 in the award-winning Anthology of American Organ Music, published by the American Guild of Organists. The organ postlude is a delightful Edwardian romp on Charles Villiers Stanford s beloved hymn tune Engelberg. Paired with Fred Pratt Green s 1972 text, When in Our Music God Is Glorified, it has become something of an unofficial anthem for the American Guild of Organists. The genesis of this organ setting of it can be traced to a special worship service for the NYC Chapter of the AGO at Church of the Heavenly Rest in Various chapter members were asked to be organists for parts of the service; Hampton s task was to improvise on the final hymn (Engelberg). Never wanting to be heard in public in less than his characteristic perfection, he opted instead to craft in advance a prelude and fugue on the tune, then made copies of it to give to every member attending!
