8 NOTES ON TODAY S MUSIC Today is the Day of Pentecost, a feast commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus, as described in the Acts of the Apostles 2:1-13. For this reason, Pentecost is considered by many Christians to be the Birthday of the Church. In honor of this very special day, myself and Rev. John Edgerton have created a theatrical presentation that traces the entire Christian liturgical year from Advent through Pentecost, as seen through the lens of light and darkness. Conceived in the format of lessons and carols, this worship experience is an interdisciplinary excursion through the life of Jesus Christ, from the world in darkness to the spread of light into the world on the Day of Pentecost. It is a sampler of musical styles representing our four weekly services at Old South Church, with genres including Gregorian chant, jazz, spirituals, gospel, Broadway, rock, and new classical, with compositions by William Billings, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, Calvin Hampton, Thad Jones, Leon Roberts, Pete Townshend, Stephen Schwartz, and Old South Church s resident composer Erik K. Gustafson. Entitled Into the Light: A Journey with Jesus of Nazareth, this service of scripture and music was commissioned by the 2014 National Convention of the American Guild of Organists, which will be held in Boston during the last week of June. Today s presentation will provide our congregation the first viewing of the piece, which will be presented two more times during the Convention on Tuesday, June 25th and Wednesday, June 26th, each at 7:30 pm in our Sanctuary. Harry L. Huff, Minister of Music 8

12 Diana Strange, Stewardship Committee Saints in the Church On this day of Pentecost, I celebrate American poet Dr. Maya Angelou, a saint and prophet among us, who died May 28th. Angelou participated for more than 25 years in the freshman convocations at my alma mater. This week Duke invited reflections about her from alumni and students. One person wrote, She was full of grace, warmth, and welcome. Responding to Angelou s encouragement to carry around lines of poetry, one person reporting having selected this: I am a human being. [No one who] is human can be alien to me. Still another said, She opened our hearts and eyes to imagine a world richer and better than the one we are living in. I hear in these reflections echoes of the spirit of Old South Church. It is in affirmation of this spirit that I make my stewardship gift today. SUMMER CHOIR: Sundays beginning June 15, 10 am. Through the summer, the Old South Choir rehearses on Sunday mornings to prepare to sing for Festival Worship that morning. Robes are not worn, however, please wear black pants or skirt and a white or solid color shirt or blouse. All are welcome. Harry@oldsouth.org FIRST WORSHIP CHOIR: Each Sunday at 8:30 am, our pick-up choir rehearses one song to sing during First Worship. No experience is necessary. You are invited to sing as often as you like. FAMILY ORGAN ENCOUNTER DAY: Saturday, June 21, 10 am - 2 pm. Presented in joyous anticipation of the National Convention of the American Guild of Organists, the public is invited to take part in a festive day of performances, interactive activities, fun sing-alongs, silent film presentations, hands on discovery and more, all focusing on the King of Instruments: the Pipe Organ! Agoboston2014.org INTO THE LIGHT: A JOURNEY WITH JESUS OF NAZARETH: June 25 and 26, 7:30 pm. This worship experience is an interdisciplinary excursion through the life of Jesus Christ, from the world in darkness to the Day of Pentecost. Today s service was created by Harry Huff and Rev. John Edgerton for the National Convention of the American Guild of Organists. It will repeat for AGO at the end of the month. All are invited. OLD SOUTH CHURCH, LET S TALK! The Christian Service and Outreach Committee is organizing one-onone conversations between members of the church to talk about faith, our lives, and the direction of the church s ministry. From these conversations we will identify the work that we ought to be doing in the world, and focus on that for the coming year. Interested in shaping the ministry of Old South? john@oldsouth.org. ROLLING FOOD DRIVE: We are collecting oatmeal to benefit the Allston-Brighton Food Pantry. Donation baskets in the church entryway. PRISON MENTORING OPPORTUNITIES: Sunday, June 15, 12:15 pm.
