Gustafson Willie Sordillo, saxophone Erik K. Gustafson, piano Children s Song #1 Chick Corea Amy Budka, vibraphone *HYMN 561 When in Our Music God Is Glorified *CALL TO WORSHIP (from 1 John 4) One: Many: One: Many: One: Many: Engelberg John M. Edgerton Beloved, let us love one another because love is from God. Everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent God s only Son into the world so that we might live through Him. * Indicates all who are able may stand

One: Many: One: Many: Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; If we love one another, God lives in us, and God s love is perfected in us. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. *A SIGN OF OUR UNITY AND RECONCILIATION WORDS OF WELCOME We invite you to greet those around you, wishing them peace or the peace of Christ. BRILLIANT SHOWMAN ANTHEMS On a Wonderful Day Like Today Leslie Bricusse On a wonderful day like today, I defy any cloud to appear in the sky. Dare any raindrop to plop in my eye on a wonderful day like today. On a wonderful morning like this, when the sun is as big as a yellow balloon, Even the sparrows are singing in tune on a wonderful morning like this. On a morning like this I could kiss everybody, I m so full of love and goodwill. Let me say furthermore I d adore everybody to come and dine, The pleasure s mine, and I will pay the bill! May I take this occasion to say that the whole human race should go down on its knees, Thank God above just for mornings like these, for the world s in a wonderful way, On a wonderful day, a fantabulous day, on a wonderful day like today! Anthony Newley When You Wish Upon a Star When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are, Anything your heart desires will come to you. If your heart is in your dream, no request is too extreme, When you wish upon a star as dreamers do. God is kind. She brings to those who love The sweet fulfillment of their secret longing. Like a bolt out of the blue, God steps in and sees you through, When you wish upon a star your dream comes true. Ned Washington 2 Leigh Harline

FAITHFUL SERVANT OF CHRIST SCRIPTURE John 13, selected verses Virginia Lowery SOLO Take My Life, and Let It Be Harry L. Huff Adriana Repetto, soloist Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to Thee. Take my moments and my days; let them flow in ceaseless praise. Take my hands and let them move at the impulse of Thy love. Take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for Thee. Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King. Take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from Thee. Take my silver and my gold; not a mite would I withhold. Take my intellect, and use every power as Thou shalt choose. Take my will, and make it Thine; it shall be no longer mine. Take my heart, it is Thine own; it shall be Thy royal throne. Take my love; my Lord, I pour at Thy feet its treasure store. Take my self, and I will be ever, only, all for Thee. Frances Havergal (Children may leave for childcare or choir.) SERMON Beloved in Christ Nancy S. Taylor *HYMN 451 Be Now My Vision Slane Sam Ou, cello *CALL TO PRAYER One: God be with you. Many: And also with you. One: Lift up your hearts. Many: We lift our hearts to God. One: Let us pray. (You may be seated.) Anthony T. Livolsi PASTORAL PRAYER 3

THE LORD S PRAYER (unison) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. PRAYER RESPONSE Peace Horace Silver Willie Sordillo, saxophone - Zoë Krohne, vocalist When you find peace of mind, leave your worries behind. Don't say that it can't be done. A time to laugh and love with all guidance from above, And the freedom you seek is won. Peace is for everyone. Horace Silver, alt. Heaven Heaven, my dream. Heaven, divine. Heaven supreme. Heaven, come by. Every sweet and pretty thing, Life with love to bring. Heavenly heaven to me is just the ultimate degree to be. Alice Babs, Duke Ellington & Johnny Hodges Duke Ellington CALL TO THE OFFERING INHERITANT OF GLORY In thanksgiving to God and giving witness to generous hearts, our financial gifts support ministries of mercy, justice, and beauty. 4

OFFERTORY ANTHEM All You Who with Bright Hope Bruce Saylor All you who with bright hope have gathered here; Look up and see what drew the ones before: The long straight way that leads to glory clear, Beyond the cross to life forevermore. On rocky ground who sprang the Jordan s flow, The Master challenged Peter to declare What only Heaven s grace could have him know: You are the Christ, the Son of God so fair! Then on the mount with James and John allowed To see his Lord with shining radiance seized And hear the voice of God from out the cloud: This is my Son, in whom I am well pleased! Now hear within, He calls to you the same: Lift up your gaze and see that I am here; Will you love Me, as one who bears My name? Then open wide your heart to love so dear. The trumpets call, the time to yield is now; Embrace your Master, let all else recede. Go boldly forward, make your solemn vow With joyful song and soaring spirit freed. For His great plan, let Him transfigure you; Surrender self and let His will be done. Go forth, united with His Spirit true; Press towards the mark, the race is almost won! David Manuel PRAYER OF DEDICATION John M. Edgerton 5

Today s music pays tribute to our beloved Harry Lyn Huff, Minister of Music at Old South Church from The selections represent the many facets of Harry s musicianship: his diverse musical vocabulary, drawing from Broadway, jazz, gospel, country, and classical genres; his championship of innovative composers, including Hampton, Saylor, DeBlasio, and Gustafson; his own creative voice, seen in his compositions, arrangements, and innovative programming; and his remarkable ability to touch our hearts. Each musical selection reflects the fond memories of our church members, and the special closeness of our musicians to Harry. We hope this day of music will allow you to celebrate anew your own relationship with our extraordinary Minister of Music. Happy Birthday, dear Prince Harry! 7

WELCOME TO OLD SOUTH CHURCH PHOTOGRAPHY: As we prepare to revise our website, we are joined today by photographers from BearWalk studio to capture the beauty of our life together. Welcome to Old South Church in Boston. We are a progressive Christian church first gathered in The Church played a significant role in early American history. Today, Old South Church continues to outfit itself for mission and ministry in the 21st century as a thriving urban church in the heart of Boston. Join us immediately following worship for fellowship and refreshments in the Gordon Chapel. Today s flowers are given in loving memory of Catherine Dauber by her grandchildren, Pam and Ian Holland, and her great-grandchildren, Nolan and Aine Holland. The flowers on the table by Harry Huff s picture are given in great thanksgiving for the life and friendship of Harry Lyn Huff by the Rev. Shawn Fiedler. If you need to stretch your legs during worship the Gordon Chapel has full audio of the Sanctuary service throughout. Name tags facilitate community and help newcomers feel welcomed. If you don t see a tag with your name on it, let us know. For LARGE print bulletins or hearing assistance devices ask an Usher. HEARING ASSISTED DEVICES Old South has installed a Hearing Loop in the Sanctuary, the latest technology in hearing assisted devices. 1. If you have a hearing aid: the loop works directly for those whose hearing aids have a T-Coil. 2. If you are hard of hearing but don t use an aid: ask for one the devices that is paired with the loop. Note: The sound will be best if you sit further inside the pews, away from the aisles. The loop does NOT work in the upper galleries. GARAGE PARKING VALIDATIONS We have arrangements for discounted parking with two nearby garages for Old South Church worship or church business (excluding weddings and concerts): 1. Park at the Garage@100 Clarendon (behind Back Bay Station), have your ticket validated at our Front Desk, and you pay the discounted rate of $7 for up to 3 hours. Old South bears no cost. 2. 13 ADULT EDUCATION SUNDAYS at 10:00 am between First and Festival Worship LECTIONARY BIBLE STUDY: Engage the preached scripture text for the week in depth and detail and enjoy the lively discussion facilitated by our Boston University School of Theology Seminarian Rebecca Bowler. COMMUNITY HOUR Meeting John Calvin Again for the First Time TODAY and October 29 In marking the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, we will explore the life and theology of the reformer upon whose thought our own tradition rests: John Calvin. He was (in)famously preoccupied with questions of sinfulness and predestination so we aren't supposed to like him! and yet, so much of the intellectual liveliness and activist spirit of the Christianity we love and practice at Old South Church owes itself to him. Join us as we ponder his questions, puzzle over his conclusions, and reapply his thinking in new ways. Old South Church Finances 101 November 5 (10:00 am and 12:30 pm) Want to understand Old South Church s financial picture? Budget? Mission? Endowment? Spending rule? Income? Expenses? Join the church s financial leaders (Treasurer, and reps from Trustees, Finance, Stewardship, and Planned Giving) to hear presentations and ask all your questions. Transparency is our middle name. Moderated by Kathy Wade, chair of the Stewardship Committee. WEEKDAYS THEOLOGICAL BOOK GROUP: Beginning Monday, October 30. Next up: themes of the Reformation, begun 500 years ago, including: the nature of Grace, the Scriptures, Faith, and the Protestant Principle, using a study guide published by the UCC ($5 at the Front Desk) and a brief online biography of Luther. Only a few spaces remain. Sign up for these four sessions at the Front Desk, or Don Wells at granwell@comcast.net. FUN-AND-NOT-SCARY, AT-A-SNAIL S-PACE READ THROUGH OF THE WHOLE BIBLE STUDY: Thursdays, 7:00 pm. This time around we ll tackle the Book of Deuteronomy.
