2 8:05a 9:35a 7:05p Litany for Our Veterans See the for formatting of the detail Litany for Veterans Day Pastor 1: Loving God, the framers of our Declaration of Independence claimed that You have endowed us with inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Yet there are those who would take these from us. Today we remember all those who have served in our country's armed forces to preserve the freedoms You have granted us, to make it impossible for those who would take away our freedoms from prevailing. On this day we pause to remember those who prepare for our defense, serve and protect our communities and citizens, and go to war in our name. Pastor 2: We ask those who are currently serving in our nation s military or have current active duty, reservists or National Guard members in their immediate families to rise and as you are able to do so, come forward to the altar rail. Those who serve in our nation s military are not the only ones who serve our country. We ask those who are currently serving our nation and communities as first responders or have a first responder in their immediate families to rise and come forward. Pastor 1: (NOTE: If any come forward there may be no one present at some services) Let us lay hands of blessing on them and quietly pray that they be strengthened and comforted as they serve God and country. (If any do come forward, Pastors lay blessing hands on them and pray for them). Pastor 2: We ask all of our veterans those who served in our nation s defense in the past to rise and join them at the altar rail. For any not able to come forward, we ask congregation members around them lay a hand of blessing on them as we pray. And now let us add to this group the families of those who have served in our nation s military or as first responders, loved ones who waited and managed homes and families during deployment, who prayed for the safety of their service member and grieved as they learned of their loved ones final sacrifice, and all who still stand today to support and bind the wounds service to our nation can bring. Pastor 1: Let us pray. For the men and women who serve our nation in the Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, PEOPLE: We give thanks for courage, for love of country, for those who work to bring peace to our world. We ask You, God of our fathers and Lord of our nation, to guard and protect them as they serve the cause of freedom. Pastor 2: For our first responders who put their lives on the line to serve and protect our citizens and communities, PEOPLE: We give thanks for courage, for love of country, for those who work to bring peace to our world. We ask You, God of our fathers and Lord of our nation, to guard and protect them as they serve the cause of freedom.

3 Pastor1: For the family members who have made great sacrifices in order to make it possible for their service members to be on watch at home or deployed and for the families who grieve the death of a member who went in harm's way, never to return, PEOPLE: We ask your blessing on our sisters and brothers in Christ, on the widow and orphan and those who seek to bring healing to the scars of war. Challenge us to love the warrior but hate the cost of war. We pray for a time when peace will reign and swords become plowshares once more, and that war be known only in history books. Pastor 2: Jesus tells us that no one has greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends. For all those veterans who have been willing to lay down their lives for us, for the veterans of wars who bear scars in their bodies and spirits, and for veterans who came home but couldn't "fit in" with their families or communities anymore and haven t found their way back after service to our country, PEOPLE: Keep all our veterans in Your care today. Grant them the peace they sought to preserve for others. As we honor our veterans, we also pray for peace. Teach all your people the ways of peace that those who have sacrificed so much for peace and freedom will not have done so in vain. May we truly be Your people and be makers of peace. We pray all these things in the name of Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. I don t know what awaits me, except that the Holy Spirit tells me in city after city that jail and suffering lie ahead. But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.
