3 The Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday, September 16, 2018, with the theme "Enlisting Witnesses for Christ Jesus." Catechists will be commissioned for their ministry in handing on our faith as witnesses to the Gospel in PSR, Sunday School, Adult Special Ed, and Youth group. Pope Francis said; catechesis is not a job or task but a call or vocation of service; Jesus did not call volunteers, but disciples who answer God s call of service (Symposium on Catechesis, July 2017). Please pray for those who have answered God s call of service, for all those who attend our programs and for the year ahead. Office of Faith Formation and Religious Education Sunday School Register you child NOW for months old (by 9/30/18) through Kindergarten Parish School of Religion Grades 1-6 Saturday mornings, 9:00-10:15 a.m. We especially need an adult or teen to help our small Elementary PSR choir (Grades 3-6) learn a song or two for our Rosary on October 6, and to sing at our Masses (October 27, December 8 and April 13). Children meet to practice at the end of PSR class time, 10:00-11:00 a.m., two weeks before each celebration. Music will be provided at the Masses by our Music Ministry. SCYGA is a wonderful group of amazing and dynamic high school age students from Saint Clare and the local community, who come together to share their faith, serve the church community and give back to those in need. American Heritage Girls (AHG) American Heritage Girls (AHG) Troop OH-0433 is having their annual Open House on Thursday, September 20, at 6:00 p.m. in the basement of Sacred Heart of Jesus (Knights Hall). 5 Special Requests from Saint Clare Community Outreach Food prices from the Cleveland Food Bank are increasing. To offset the rising costs, the 15 parishes who volunteer at the Ozanam Center (Saint Philomena s Church) are asking for donations of nonfood items that are needed by clients who visit monthly. Items needed include: Bars of soap (individually wrapped), toothbrushes and toothpaste, laundry detergent (small sizes), dishwashing detergent, and toilet paper. These items are all available at dollar stores. Please mark the bagged items with St. Philomena and deposit in the white plastic containers at church entrances. Also needed are large brown paper bags needed for our own food pantry to pack food bags. Yarn is needed for winter hats. If you have yarn at home and are not using it, please consider donating it. Please place it in the above-mentioned receptacle. Any knitters interested in making these hats, please call Outreach hotline, , extension 161, and kindly leave your name and phone number. This week we will be kicking off our Magazine Drive and Chocolate sales. If you need to renew or order a subscription, contact the school at and talk with Mrs. Granito or Mrs. Perlatti. If you know a student at the Academy, you can buy the magazines or chocolate directly from them and they get the credit for their sales. Chocolate will also be sold in the Academy office and the Saint Clare business office. This year CCA will be collecting Box Tops again. 7 Church of Saint Clare Office of Faith Formation and Religious Education Children of our parish have received offering envelopes for use each week at Mass during the Offertory. Stewardship is not just for adults. It is important that young people also learn that they are greatly blessed by God and that God, in turn, expects them to share their blessings. Every day, children in our society are bombarded with hundreds of advertising messages (adults receive upwards of 20,000 advertising messages a day). For the most part, these messages tell our children that they are not good enough unless they wear the right clothes, drink the right soda or even carry the right cell phone. We think it is important that our children hear a different message. Children need to hear the stewardship message. They need to hear that God has already given them many unique and special gifts. They need to hear that Jesus loves them just as they are. And they need to realize that they are very blessed as they are right now. In fact, they are so blessed that they even have something to share with the rest of the world. For this reason, we are encouraging use of children s offertory envelopes, which will allow our children to place their own gifts to God in the Offertory basket each week at Mass. We want to be very clear about the fact that the purpose of this program IS NOT to raise more money for our parish. The purpose is to teach the children the joy of giving and the fact that they need to give back to God out of gratitude for all that God has given to them. One of the primary purposes of this effort is to teach children that it does indeed feel good to give of their time, talent and treasure. It is good for our self-esteem to know that we have something to offer back to the world. For that reason it is more important that a child puts in a nickel or dime or quarter from his or her own allowance and feels proud of that contribution than that of a child who puts in five dollars from mom s or dad s wallet, which is meaningless to the child. It is important that a child understands the lasting value of a good deed or an act of kindness in sharing of their time and talent with others. We do hope that we can count on your support. We believe that this opportunity to participate in the Offertory will be a positive experience for our children, which will mold them into stronger and more giving Catholic adults. We ask you to support the effort by first and foremost bringing your children to Mass every weekend. Remind them to bring their envelopes with them and talk with them through the week regarding their thoughts and feelings about giving of their time, talent and treasure. Envelopes for elementary age children also have a line to fill in with a good deed they have done during the week
