Verse 7: all) Introduction to Climate Change Sunday Prayer of confession (from the Eco-Congregation movement in Scotland) Loving God, as we celebrate your creation we know how much You have given us. We come before You today recognising the times when we have failed to acknowledge You and do our best. You have invited us into relationship with You, and others. For the times when we have turned away and broken the bonds between us. Lord have mercy Lord have mercy You have given us many gifts to share with one another. For the times when we have used them without regard for others. Christ have mercy Christ have mercy You invited us to be to be Your disciples in the world. For the times when we have rejected Your invitation and taken our own path. Lord have mercy Lord have mercy Children come to the front Baptism of Genevieve Foster (family please come forward) Baptism elder: Rosemary Troughton Baptism song: Child of Blessing (Tune: Ode to Joy) 1. Child of blessing, child of promise, baptized with the Spirit s sign, with this water God has sealed you, unto love and grace divine. 2. Child of joy, our dearest treasure, God s you are, from God you came. back to God we humbly give you; live as one who bears Christ s name. 2

3 4. Child of God, your loving Parent, learn to listen for God s call, grow to laugh and sing and worship, trust and love God more than all. Children may go out to Kowhai Lounge or Family Room Reproduced with permission under CCLI licence # Notices Passing the Peace: We share the peace of Christ with each other. Hymn 82: God who made the earth Bible Reading: Psalm 148 (page 621 in pew Bibles) Congregation reads even numbered verses. Gospel Reading: Mark 9:42-50 (p.59 NT) Alan Simson Talk on Climate Change, Bronwyn Hayward Offering: Our freewill offering to support the mission and Church of Jesus Christ will be received. Dedication of the offering (please stand) Prayer Song (remain seated) These hills where the hawk flies lonely (FFS 63) 1. These hills where the hawk flies lonely, beaches where the long surf rolls, mountains where the snows meet heaven, these are our care. Pastures where the sheep graze calmly, orchards where the apples grow, gardens where the roses cluster, these are our prayer. 2. Forests where the tree ferns tower, rivers running strong and clear, oceans where the great whales wander, these are our care. Race meeting race as equals, justice for age-old wrongs, worth for every man and woman, these are our prayer. 3

4 3. Cities where the young roam restless, lives brought to deep despair, homeless and powerless people, these are our care. Places where the Word is spoken, hands held in serving love, faiths of our many cultures, these are our prayer. 4. All that the old world gave us, all that the new world brings, language, ideas and customs, these are our care. Life finding joy and value, faith seeking truth and light, God heard and seen in all things, this be our prayer. Colin Gibson Reproduced with permission under CCLI license # Prayers for others (from the Eco-Congregation movement in Scotland) We pray together (Change prayer, by Leunig): Loving Father, help us to change, to change ourselves and to change our world; to know the need for it, to deal with the pain of it. to feel the joy of it to undertake the journey without understanding the destination. Amen. Closing Hymn: O Lord my God (How great thou art) 1. O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the works thy hand hath made, I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed. Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee, How great thou art! How great thou art! Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee, How great thou art! How great thou art! 2. When thro the woods and forest glades I wander, I hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees; when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur and hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze. 4

5 3. But when I think that God, his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in, that on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, he bled and died to take away my sin. 4. When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation and take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! Then I shall bow in humble adoration and there proclaim, My God, how great thou art! An Uncomfortable Blessing from Iona (Mark Wilcox). May the Spirit bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half truths and superficial relationships so that you will live deep in your heart. May the Spirit bless you with anger at injustice and oppression, the exploitation of people and earth so that you will work for justice, equity and peace. May the Spirit bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer so that you will reach out your hand to comfort them. May the Spirit bless you with foolishness to think that you can make a difference in the world so that you will do the things which others say cannot be done. In the name of God the Creator, God the Christ, God the Holy Spirit, Amen. Amen, amen, amen (sung) Please remain standing as the Bible is processed out. Thank you for sharing in worship this morning. Please come through to the hall for morning tea. 5
