Please spread the word to others! St. Joseph Day of Hope Cathedral s Diaper Drive continues. What a beacon of hope our parish is! We want to provide a pack of diapers for 500 families in need. The entire month of October is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Most Holy Rosary. The history of this dedication goes back centuries. It is a pious practice, just behind Mass and praying the Liturgy of the Hours, something Fr. Hansen, Jared and I do daily. The Most Holy Rosary is an ancient practice also known as the Marian Psalter. There are 150 Psalms, and historically one would pray 150 Hail Marys. On the seventh day of the month of October, in the year 1571 of Our Lord Jesus Christ, a tremendous naval battle was fought. This is known as the Battle of Lepanto. The Ottoman Empire sought to suppress the Christian faith through overtaking land, property and forced conversion. Pope Pius V asked the faithful to pray the rosary fervently all across Europe. Churches remained open day and night so the faithful could come inside and pray for victory. Don Juan of Austria, led the Mediterranean battle which ensued. Out-numbered by some estimates as much as 7-to-1, the Christians fought bravely against these heavy odds and the formidable opponents. This was one of the fiercest battles in the history of mankind up to that point. Tens of thousands of lives had been lost and victory seemed impossible. Don Juan of Austria divided the ranks of the naval fleet he was chartered to lead; thus, achieving multiple points of attack. The Venetians fought to the left flank with the Maltese turning to the right, providing for Don Juan and his fleet to pierce the center, the very core of the enemy, forcing it into division and calamity. I invite you to do a little research on the Battle of Lepanto. How Mary became known as Our Lady of Victory, how this triumph helped to secure Christianity and our invitation to pray the rosary daily to help us in our lives. In summary, the decision to designate October as the month of the Rosary apparently stems from the Church s desire to extend its thanksgiving to Our Lady for victory in the Battle of Lepanto from one Sunday to a whole month. In addition, when Our Lady appeared in Fatima in May 1917, she identified herself as Our Lady of the Rosary. Finally, Catholic Encyclopedia adds that the practice of reciting the Rosary every day during the month of October can hardly be said to be older than the Rosary Encyclicals of Leo XIII Remember that Cathedral School receives rebates when you buy Cathedral Cash.
