3 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT 3 Pastor s Corner / Rincón del Pastor Oh People of Zion, behold, the Lord will come to save the nations, and the Lord will make the glory of his voice heard in the joy of your heart (Isaiah 30: 19, 30). Blessings today on this Second Sunday of Advent! The Readings today remind us that we are an advent people, a church who cries out to prepare the way of the Lord, to make straight the road to salvation. St. John the Baptist is a wonderful model of faith for us; for he, in his very life, lived to serve the Lord. Unique in his personality, he prepared for the coming of Jesus. As with St. John the Baptist, we too have our personalities to make ready the salvation of the promises of Jesus Christ. Let us not give into our culture, but earnestly try to prepare our hearts for the coming of the Lord by our works of charity and perhaps by going to receive the sacrament of reconciliation. Perhaps too, we can become an instrument of peace, by welcoming the stranger to the Lord by volunteering to help with our various ministries. Also, remember to come to our bilingual celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe, on 4:45pm with a procession, rosary, reenactment of the story and ending with the 6:00pm Mass. Food and refreshments will follow. Remember, God is searching our hearts and souls. The Lord loves us so much. Archbishop s Annual Appeal 2017 If you still have a pledge balance for the Archbishop s Annual Appeal, please complete your payment as soon as possible. Your financial support of the annual appeal, and our parish, is greatly appreciated! The deadline for payments is December 31st, and any amount received above our goal will be returned to our parish assessment free from the archdiocese! Thank you again for your generosity! Make-A-Friend Ministry The Pro-Life Committee is sponsoring a Make-A-Friend Tree, that will hold the names of many of our friends and parishioners, who are homebound or live in assisted living or nursing homes. Many of these individuals would love to have some company. Beginning this weekend, December 9th/10th, you are invited to check the tags on our Make-A-Friend tree to find someone with common interests. Whether you love reading, solving crossword puzzles, playing cards or board games, or just love to chat, the idea is to increase our own personal ministries to the homebound by giving them the gift of a weekly visit that they know they can look forward to! All parishioners who sign up to visit the homebound and those in assisted living or nursing homes (vulnerable adults), are REQUIRED to attend our VIRTUS - Protecting God s Children (PGC) safe environment training and are subject to a background check. VIRTUS sessions are available here at St. Peter s on December 17th from 2:00pm - 5:00pm and January 9th from 6:00pm - 9:00pm. Volunteers must attend one of these sessions or another session offered by the Archdiocese prior to serving in this ministry. You can register for VIRTUS online at Pope Francis Monthly Prayer Intention for December Each year, the Holy Father asks for our prayers for a specific intention each month. Join us for donuts and coffee each Sunday morning following the 8:00am Mass in the Parish Hall. 5 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT 5 Advent Penance Service Schedule The Sacrament of Reconciliation is an important part of preparing your heart for Jesus. Your heart is where Christ wishes to dwell and Advent is the perfect time to make room in it for His presence. On Tuesday, December 19th at 7:00pm, join Fr. Timothy and area priests in the Sanctuary of the Church to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation at our Advent Penance Service. This is not just an Hispanic event, but a parish-wide event celebrating the apparitions of our Lady of Guadalupe to Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill in There will be a potluck following Mass and everyone is invited to bring their favorite dish! Any child, teenager, or adult that would like to be a dancer, or participate in the representation of the appearances of the Blessed Virgin is invited to attend our practice sessions. Dancers will practice every Tuesday at 7:00pm in the Parish Hall, and the rehearsals for the representation will be every Sunday at 4:00pm prior to the Spanish Mass. The monks at the Monastery of the Holy spirit believe that work done for the sake of love, as they strive to remain open to the Holy Spirit, is itself a form of prayer. It is in this spirit that the monks produce and offer their handmade food items to you and your loved ones. The monk s monastic labor at making fruitcake, fudge and biscotti is an important part of their life. Primarily, it helps provide them with the financial means to support themselves. The Knights of Columbus will be selling monastery products in the Papal Hallway following all Masses on the weekends of December 9/10, and December 16/17. At times of celebration, the monks hope you will find their quality handmade food products useful in expressing your love and thoughtfulness to loved ones in your life.
