WELCOME RINGING OF THE CHIMES PRELUDE OPENING WORDS from John and 1 John 4:7-21 One: I am the vine, said Jesus, and God is the vine grower. I am the vine, said Jesus, and we are the branches. One: Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God. Everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. *HYMN NCH 247 Source and Sovereign, Rock and Cloud Tune: Aberystwyth Words: Thomas H. Troeger *LITANY UCC Worship Ways One: Remove the bad fruit from us, O God. Prune us with your love. One: Trim away this branch. Remove that twig. Burn it in the fire. Remain with us so that we might show your glory as we seek to grow again. One: Feed us with your words so that we might find the new life we need. We see God in the love we share. All: We grow with God in the mercy we give. Amen.

Today at Peace *RESPONSE Halle, Halle, Halle source: trad. Church School at 9:45, age 3-12th grade. Beginners through 5th grade on the lower level, confirmation in room 23, Stepping Stones (sr. high) in room 20. Adult Education at 9:45 in Room 24 - Continuing discussions of the book Convictions, by Marcus Borg. This week s focus is Borg s thinking about God. Come join us! Worship Activities for Children Activity sheets and crayons are available in the narthex, just behind the Welcome Table. The activity sheets are coordinated with the scripture readings and offered for both younger and older children. Please see an usher if you need any assistance. Shepherds at the 11am Service We are pleased to offer a supervised play time for preschool-age children following the Children s Story. How it works: Following the story, children gather with Naomi & a volunteer in the narthex (just outside our sanctuary) and walk downstairs together. To help us keep our children safe, we ask adults to sign children in (either before the service, ask an usher for the clipboard, or before they go downstairs, see Naomi in the narthex). Parents are always welcome to escort the children downstairs and stay as long as you wish. Once signed in, children stay with the adults in the Red Room. At the close of worship, adults meet children in the Red Room (lower level) and sign them out. The Shepherd Room is a tree nut and peanut free zone. ENDOWMENT TESTIMONY Norma Leuthauser READING FROM THE CHRISTIAN TRADITION John 15:1-8 I am the true vine, and my God is the gardener. God cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit God prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to God s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. One: Whether we understand what is written in the Bible as fact, metaphor, myth, or story, let us appreciate the wisdom contained in these words. CHILDREN S STORY Following the story, young children are encouraged to remain in worship with their parents, or they may choose to go to the nursery (birth-3) or to Shepherds (11am: ages 4-6), a playtime in the Red Room downstairs. 3 *HYMN NCH 347 Let Us Talents and Tongues Employ Kaan Altar Flowers The flowers that beautify the altar this morning are in celebration of Roni Branding s 80th Birthday and an expression of gratitude from her family. A Note of Thanks from Kourtney Strade Dear Peace UCC, Thank you so much for the warm wishes, the prayer quilt (beautiful!) and for all the memories I will take with me as I continue my journey. It has been a blessing to me to work in this congregation and I pray for your continued growth and meaningful quest for more questions, without the need for answers. Blessings, Kourtney PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Believing that each joy and/or concern expressed is indeed a prayer, after each expression, the worship leader will say: Loving God. And the people may respond: Hear our prayer. PASTORAL PRAYER LORD S PRAYER, NEW ZEALAND The New Zealand Prayer Book Eternal Spirit, Earth-maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver, Source of all that is and that shall be, Father and Mother of us all, Loving God, in whom is heaven: The hallowing of your name echo through the universe! The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the world! Your heavenly will be done by all created beings! Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth. With the bread we need for today, feed us. In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us. In times of temptation and testing, strengthen us. From trials too great to endure, spare us. From the grip of all that is evil, free us. For you reign in the glory of the power that is love, now and for ever. Amen.

In Our Prayers INVITATION AND REMEMBRANCE based on our Theological Assumptions Liturgist: Liturgist: Come, Holy Spirit, and move among these elements assembled at this Table. Through this sacrament, transform our hurt into healing, our fear into faith, and death into life. As this bread, sown in hills and valleys, is harvested, and now becomes one in the loaf, so we, scattered, diverse, separated and isolated from one another, hear your invitation to become one body around this Table, the center of our life together. As this juice, grown in vineyards under the sun, fills the cup, may we be filled and refreshed by this meal, and strengthened to respond to your call to reach out in compassion to all living things. In sharing this meal we remember. We remember meals Jesus shared with friends and enemies, outcasts and marginalized, fearful and earnest. He took the bread and, giving thanks, blessed it and broke it and shared it with his guests, saying, This is the bread of life, symbol of my sacrifice. As we share the bread today, we eat it as those who seek to follow Jesus. After the meal, Jesus took the cup. Giving thanks, he shared it with his guests, saying, This cup symbolizes a new relationship with God, a relationship of partnership founded on grace. As we share the cup, we seek to experience that grace in which Jesus lived fully. All: Come, Holy Spirit, come. Bless this bread and bless this fruit of the vine. Bless all of us in our eating and drinking that our eyes might be opened, that we might recognize the risen Christ in our midst, indeed, in one another. Come, Holy Spirit, come. The Congregation is invited to come forward by the center aisle, partake of the bread (gluten free wafers are on the table) and juice, and light a candle in prayer, and place an offering in the plates beside the table. You may also give electronically from the pews by scanning the QR code to the right. Catch the eye of a table host if you would prefer to be served at your seat.

COMMUNION SONG Plenty of Bread source: Haugen About out Bread Today s communion bread was baked by Bridge Bread, a vocational bakery staffed by workers from The Bridge, an organization that provides sanctuary for homeless and at risk persons in St. Louis. If you placed an order for Bridge Bread last week, it is now available in the narthex. Bridge Bread orders are collected on the last Sunday of the month and distributed on the first Sunday of the month. Any orders that are not picked up will be placed in the freezer on the lower level. Thanks to all who ordered last Sunday, we sold 19 items of Bridge Bread, which provided 3.5 hours of paid employment this week. Peace UCC Foundation Update 1st Quarter 2015 As of 31 March 2015, the assets of the Peace UCC Foundation are $784, The Foundation quarterly contribution to the church operating budget was $7, PRAYER OF DEDICATION Seasons of the Spirit One: We dedicate ourselves to love, to recognize and realize the connections that bind us to each other, that make us one with one another like branches on a tree or like fruit on a vine. We dedicate ourselves to the source of love, to knowing that if we love one another, God lives in us and love is perfected in us. One: Perfect love casts out fear; May it be so in us. Amen. Scan and Give Supporting the work of this church has never been easier. Just scan the QR code with your smartphone and you can make donations to Peace UCC and mission moment of the month. In May we are supporting Lydia s House, an organization that provides transitional housing, community, and spiritual support for women and children experiencing domestic violence. ANNOUNCEMENTS

You can honor your Mom and Grandmom by purchasing a baked item while at church that morning. Thanks for your support of Lydia's House. - Servant Team Garden Planting Happening TODAY Join us in the yearly planting of the vegetable garden! Roll up your sleeves and help to plant tomatoes and beans at noon in the garden boxes just off the lower parking lot. All the food grown will go to a local food pantry. Summer Special Music Would you like to share your musical talents in church? While our choirs take a break over the summer, musicians are needed to provide special music during worship. Please pick a Sunday that works for you and sign up in the narthex. If you need help picking music, please see Darcy Swanson. New Installation in the Peace UCC Fireside Art Gallery For the month of May, the Peace UCC Fireside Art Gallery is featuring the works of the Archer family. The cross stitch and needle point pieces were done by Kelly Archer s Aunt Marilyn and Grandma Alice. Their colorful, folksy craft legacy inspired Django at the age of 5 to make his own marker samplers as he copied scripture out of his bedtime devotional book each night. Kelly Archer had always wished she could follow in her matriarch s footsteps, but having lived with arthritis for most of her life the fine needle work proved difficult. She was then overjoyed to learn basketry while at Moon Beach church camp, a craft with larger movements that are much friendlier on the hands. Kelly dyes her own reed to make colorful baskets that are in constant use around the Archer home, for fruit and dinner rolls, Legos and matchbox cars. If you would like to show your art work in the Fireside Art Gallery, please contact Gail Saxton or Brenda Detrick. *HYMN "Mothering God, You Gave Me Birth" Tune: Maryton Words: Jean Janzen Bulletin recycling: Though we invite you to take your bulletin home to review the prayers and opportunities throughout the week, if you choose to leave your bulletin after the 8:30am service, place it in the basket and we will use it again. Bulletins placed in the basket after the 11:00am service will be recycled. Notes: Sources for words, images, and music are noted where available. Permission to reprint music and words from sources other than The New Century Hymnal is granted under OneLicense.net, license no. A , and/or LicenSing.org.
