1 PRELUDE "Processional and Joyful Dance" Margaret R. Tucker Handchimes Ann Fessenden, Flute WELCOME OPENING WORDS Rev. Mindi Welton-Mitchell One: Great Creator, You made us in Your image, Help us to live into the fullness of Your image in our lives. Holy Spirit, You reflect Your image in us, Call us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Loving Christ, You teach us that Your image is within us, Keep us to Your ways of love, justice, and faithfulness. In this time of worship, may we rejoice that You are always present. You are here, now, forever, with us. Amen. *HYMN NCH #299 "For All the Saints" Tune: Sine Nomine

2 Today s Learning Hour Church School does not meet today, as it is the fifth Sunday of the month. Youth Group meets at 9:45a.m. in Room 20. Elementary OWL (Our Whole Lives) begins at 9:30a.m. in Room 21. This class is closed to visitors and drop-in participants, please let the church office know if you would like to receive information about a future session. Handchimes rehearsal begins at 9:45a.m. in the Sanctuary. Good Questions This fall we will spend our learning time exploring what it means to be in covenant with God, with the church and with each other. We will read the book Covenant, by Jane Fisler Hoffman. We have copies of the book available. We hope you will join us in this important study as we grapple with what it means to do God s work in the world. 9:45a.m. Room 24 Each week a member of the Peace Fisher s Circle will share a reflection from the current chapter being discussed. Here is today s reflection, written by Karen Driskill: Particular Covenants among UCC congregations Following the precedents of church-creating covenants, local churches began to write their own congregational covenants outlining how members may be removed from membership and other intricacies of local church life. Development of new covenantal agreements in any setting of the church could be a rich process that will challenge many of our churches to think in new ways, as we have become unaccustomed to having any clear expectations of members or leaders. Another type of covenant is behavioral covenant. This is the establishing of guidelines which participants promise to follow and is based on biblical guidelines. Behavioral covenant has value only if the leadership and participants are committed to it. Learning Hour on November 6th: Good Questions continues the conversation on covenant. 9:45a.m. in Room 24. Church School for children age 3 12th 9:45a.m. Elementary OWL (Our Whole Lives) 9:30a.m., Room 21. Folk Choir 9:45a.m., Choir Room. *PRAYER OF INVOCATION Rev. David Bucholtz (adapted) One: Eternal God, in every age you have raised up men and women, born to live and die in faith. Many: Forgive our indifference to your will. One: You have commanded us to speak, Many: but we have been silent. One: You have called us to do what is just, Many: but we have been fearful. All: Keep before us faithful people for us to follow so that, living with courage and love, we may bring about your kindom of justice and peace. Amen *RESPONSE "Make Us One" Carol Cymbala A MEMORIALS PURCHASED DEDICATION OF THE HANDCHIMES Nancy McDonald 5 Octave Handchimes combined memorial gifts of Earl Brown, William Oberkrom, Louise Shankland and Claire Vieth MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS RECIEVED THIS YEAR Earl Brown Louise Shankland Suzanne Stephens READING FROM THE CHRISTIAN TRADITION Luke 19:1-10 NRSV He entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today. So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumble and said, He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner. Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much. Then Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost. Luke 19:8 Common English Bible Zacchaeus stopped and said to the Lord, Look, Lord, I give half of my possessions to the poor. And if I have cheated anyone, I repay them four times as much.

3 One: For the marvelous blend of fact, myth, poetry, and story that is in scripture, we give thanks. Many: May the Spirit open us to the wisdom we most need to hear. CHILDREN S TIME Following the story, young children are encouraged to remain in worship or they may go to the nursery (birth-3). For more information, contact Gail Saxton at 314- xxx-xxxx or saxton.gail@gmail.com TOTENFEST Today we celebrate Totenfest, the German word for Festival of the Dead. It was established in 1816 by Prussian Emperor Fredrick William III as a day to remember that nation s soldiers who had died in the recent Prussian War. It was an important observance in the Evangelical Church in Prussia, the predecessor of the German Evangelical Church of America, of which this congregation was a part. Its roots go back even further to the All Saints and All Souls days of the medieval church. In recent years, many churches like ours that celebrate Totenfest have also added the listing of all babies born during the previous year, celebrating the fullness of life from birth to death. REMEMBERENCE WE REMEMBER THOSE WHO HAVE DIED IN THE PAST YEAR, CELEBRATING THEIR LIVES, EVEN AS WE CONTINUE TO GRIEVE Deborah Ban, sister of David Ban Maryann Fields, cousin of Al Schon Margaret Gabathuler, mother of Linda Kolley Leigh Alves Grass, cousin of Jo Ann Alves Diane Hug, cousin of Linda Kolley Stephen Jenkins, father of Emma and Zach Jenkins Annalea Kayar, longtime member of Peace UCC Patrick McCreary, brother-in-law of Joe and Debbie Kelly Orie Loucks, father of Ted Loucks Thomas James Mulligan, brother of Ray Mulligan John H. PASTORAL PRAYER PRAYER As I live every day, I want to be a channel for peace. May I bring love where there is hatred and healing where there is hurt; joy where there is sadness and hope where there is fear. I pray that I may always try to understand and comfort other people as well as seeking comfort and understanding from them. Wherever possible, may I choose to be a light in the darkness, a help in times of need, and a caring, honest friend. May justice, kindness, and peace flow from my heart forever. Amen. TOTENFEST OFFERING FROM THE CHILDREN FOR THE FAMILIES OF THOSE BEING REMEMBERED AND CELEBRATED Vosper

5 INVITATION AND REMEMBRANCE based on our Theological Assumptions Minister: Come, Holy Spirit, and move among these elements assembled at this Table. Many: Through this sacrament, transform our hurt into healing, our fear into faith, and death into life. Minister: As the grain, sown in hills and valleys, is harvested, and now becomes one in the loaf, Many: so we, scattered, diverse, separated and isolated from one another, hear your invitation to become one body around this Table, the center of our life together. Liturgist: As this juice, grown in vineyards under the sun, fills the cup, may we be filled and refreshed by this meal, Many: and strengthened to respond to your call to reach out in compassion to all living things. Minister: In sharing this meal we remember. Many: We remember meals Jesus shared with friends and enemies, outcasts and marginalized, fearful and earnest. Minister: He took the bread and, giving thanks, blessed it and broke it and shared it with his friends as a symbol of his sacrifice. Many: As we share the bread today, we eat it as those who seek to follow Jesus. Liturgist: After the meal, Jesus took the cup. Giving thanks, he shared it with his friends, symbolizing a new relationship with God, a relationship of partnership founded on grace. Many: As we share the cup, we seek to experience that grace in which Jesus lived fully. All: CELEBRATION OF COMMUNION 8:30 AM Come, Holy Spirit, come. Bless this bread and bless this fruit of the vine. Bless all of us in our eating and drinking that our eyes might be opened, that we might recognize the risen Christ in our midst, indeed, in one another. Come, Holy Spirit, come. The Congregation is invited to come forward by the center aisle, partake of the bread and juice, (gluten free bread and chalice available) and light a candle in prayer, and place an offering in the plates beside the table. If you prefer to give electronically, please scan the QR code to the right. Catch the eye of a table host if you would prefer to be served at your seat.
