WELCOME PRELUDE OPENING WORDS (Mark 10:35-45) UCC Worship Ways One: We may come here for a glimpse of glory, but Jesus asks us: Can you drink the cup that I drink? One: The cup of Jesus own life: struggle and joy; suffering and hope. Fullness of life! We may come here to get close to Jesus, and Jesus asks us: Can you be baptized with my baptism? One: Baptized into the reign of God, where the Spirit breaks down barriers among all people and creates new relationships! We may come here for honor or fame, but Jesus challenges us: To become great you must serve! One: Why are we here? To drink the cup of fullness of life; To immerse ourselves in Jesus struggle for justice and peace; To learn how to serve so that the world may be healed. *HYMN NCH # 495 "Called as Partner's in Christ Service" Tune: Beecher

Meet us here today, and fill us with confidence in your presence, that we may risk sharing Jesus cup and his baptism, so the world may become the place of love and justice you desire for all. One: Shelter us with your light, and clothe us with your heavenly garments. All: Teach us how we may best serve ourselves and one another on this daring adventure. Amen. *RESPONSE "Come, My People" James F. D. Martin A READING FROM THE CHRISTIAN TRADITION Mark 10:35-45 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to Jesus and said to him, Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you. And he said to them, What is it you want me to do for you? And they said to him, Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory. But Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They replied, We are able. Then Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared. When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the anointed one came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many. One: Understanding what is written in the Bible as fact, metaphor, poetry, myth, and story, let us appreciate the wisdom contained in these words. CHILDREN S STORY Following the story, young children are encouraged to remain in worship with their parents, or they may choose to go to the nursery (birth-3) or to Shepherds (11a.m.: ages 4-6), a playtime in the Room 21 on the upper level.

SPECIAL MUSIC 8:30 "God is Calling Us" Natalie Sleeth arr. Jean Anne Shafferman Children's Choir Abbott Archer, Django Archer, Gabriel Grundy, Deja Pierre Foster, Evan Tesch 11:00 "Let Me Be Your Servant" Stan Pethel Chancel Choir SERMON Rev. Bob Molsberry *HYMN NCH #498 "Jesu, Jesu Fill Us With Your Love" Tune: Chereponi Totenfest On Sunday, November 1, Peace UCC will observe Totenfest, the liturgical remembrance of those who have died in the preceding year. We will also celebrate those born in our community during the preceding year, thus celebrating the full cycle of birth and death. Members and friends of Peace UCC may submit the names of parents, siblings, children, and partners who have died this year, as well as the names of children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews born this year. Please submit names to the church office at: or (314) Were you there? The DisAbility Project Did you miss last Sunday and The DisAbility Project? A thought-provoking yet thoroughly enjoyable performance (dance movements, singing and humor) about what it is and is NOT to be an individual with a disability. Here s what people had to say: Katrina Hostman: It was a fantastic show, I felt moved by the material that was presented, there was so much more that I needed to know about being considerate, accepting, and respectful of others ideas, needs, priorities. It will make me a better friend, and person. Gabriel Grundy: It was a good show. There were things in it I never thought about before. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Believing that each joy and/or concern expressed is indeed a prayer, after each expression, the worship leader will say: Loving God. And the people may respond: Hear our prayer. PASTORAL PRAYER LORD S PRAYER Adapt. Schon Our loving parent who dwells both within and without us, Your name is sacred to us. May your dream for us be realized here on earth as it is in you. Give us what we need for today and let us be satisfied with that. And let us treat others as we would want them to treat us. Don t let us be tempted to the baser ways to which people often resort. Let us instead follow your dream for us. For you are the creator, redeemer and sustainer of all life. Amen Many Peace members and friends have contacted the church office wanting to know how they could support the vital work being done by the performers. To learn more about The DisAbility Project, please visit: To donate: Checks made payable to That Uppity Theatre Company (parent organization) and marked for The DisAbility Project in the memo line may be mailed to: That Uppity Theatre Company 4466 West Pine Boulevard, Suite 13C Saint Louis, MO 63108

In Our Prayers CELEBRATION OF COMMUNION 8:30AM INVITATION AND REMEMBRANCE based on our Theological Assumptions Shepherd Volunteers Needed To be in compliance with our Safe Church Policy, two adults are to be present to supervise children s activities. This includes our Shepherd Program for our children during worship service. As you know, Naomi Adair is our current Shepherd. However, we need another adult for this program. We are relying on volunteers so that we are in compliance with our policy. Please see Naomi or myself after service to volunteer. If we get enough volunteers, it could be that each volunteer would only need to help out once a month, or once every two months. We just need one volunteer each Sunday. The Shepherd time begins after the Children s Story during second service, to the end of the second service. Won t you please consider volunteering? Thank you. Lola M. Contestabile, People Team Leader ( Liturgist: Liturgist: All: Come, Holy Spirit, and move among these elements assembled at this Table. Through this sacrament, transform our hurt into healing, our fear into faith, and death into life. As this bread, sown in hills and valleys, is harvested, and now becomes one in the loaf, so we, scattered, diverse, separated and isolated from one another, hear your invitation to become one body around this Table, the center of our life together. As this juice, grown in vineyards under the sun, fills the cup, may we be filled and refreshed by this meal, and strengthened to respond to your call to reach out in compassion to all living things. In sharing this meal we remember. We remember meals Jesus shared with friends and enemies, outcasts and marginalized, fearful and earnest. He took the bread and, giving thanks, blessed it and broke it and shared it with his guests, saying, This is the bread of life, symbol of my sacrifice. As we share the bread today, we eat it as those who seek to follow Jesus. After the meal, Jesus took the cup. Giving thanks, he shared it with his guests, saying, This cup symbolizes a new relationship with God, a relationship of partnership founded on grace. As we share the cup, we seek to experience that grace in which Jesus lived fully. Come, Holy Spirit, come. Bless this bread and bless this fruit of the vine. Bless all of us in our eating and drinking that our eyes might be opened, that we might recognize the risen Christ in our midst, indeed, in one another. Come, Holy Spirit, come. The Congregation is invited to come forward by the center aisle, partake of the bread and juice, (gluten free wafers and chalice are on the table) and light a candle in prayer, and place an offering in the plates beside the table. You may also give electronically from the pews by scanning the QR code to the right. Catch the eye of a table host if you would prefer to be served at your seat. Correction: Jerry LaMont s name was erroneously excluded from the list of Job Jar participants of the last 10 years as printed in last week s bulletin. We certainly celebrate Jerry s contributions to the work of the Job Jar and apologize for this oversight.

We are invited to share our tithes and gifts to support the work of this community in the service to God. RESPONSE Peace Be With You Christopher Grundy Please remain seated PRAYER OF DEDICATION All: Parent God, may this offering assist us in continuing Christ s work in the world to heal the grief, transgressions, and illnesses that oppress and harm your creation. Amen. ANNOUNCEMENTS CELEBRATION OF GIVING 11:00AM UCC Worship Ways Peace Leadership Challenge Promise for a Future with Hope Peace United Church of Christ members and friends, who are already giving generous financial support for the church and who are ready to be challenged to step up to even higher levels of commitment, are warmly invited to an evening of celebration and hope at Eden Commons, 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, October 24 th. A hearty appetizer/dessert buffet will be offered. The program will feature an inspirational presentation from the Rev. Ann Asper Wilson, former Interim Pastor at Peace, and premier the showing of a new video of ministry highlights from the past couple of years, with testimonials by some of your friends about how they have experienced God through this congregation. Although no financial commitments will be solicited at this Event, participants will be challenged to step up in generosity during the November stewardship campaign. Peace UCC is at a pivotal moment, with new leadership on the horizon and increasing missional needs. Can we support the vision for ministry that we articulated in our Future Story? The event is free, but please register your intention to attend by calling the church office. Foundation Distribution The Peace UCC Foundation distribution to the General Fund of the Church is $7, for the 3 rd Quarter of Although the stock market is depressed at present, the distribution formula using 16 quarters average helps to maintain both the average market value and the amount of the distribution to the church through the normal ups and downs in the market. Scan and Give Supporting the work of this church has never been easier. Just scan the QR code with your smartphone and you can make donations to Peace UCC and mission moment of the month. In October we are supporting Neighbors in Need, a special offering within the United Church of Christ.

Habitat For Humanity: UCC House At a recent Habitat for Humanity Meeting we discovered that Candice will be the recipient of the UCC House that we will rehab this Fall. Candice has three lovely children, ages 28, 19, and 13, who we met at the meeting. The oldest son is a sophomore at Forest Park Community College. The house is at Fox Haven in Florissant, near the last exit on 367, across the street from Arrow Head Elementary School. Candice said it had been her dream to have a forever home for her children and grandchildren when they come. She has already started her hours of volunteering for Habitat. UCC has now built a Habitat House for the last 25 years. This fall, we will be working with Webster Groves Congregational Church who will join us for the build on November 14th. Please save that date we will be laying flooring inside the house that day. We would love to have you join us. Last year we had a Rummage Sale to raise money for Habitat. This year we decided to ask our own UCC Congregation to help us raise money for our contribution if we are not able to work on the 14th. Please help us raise the money for our church contribution to Habitat. Write your check to Peace UCC with a note at the bottom left for Habitat for Humanity you may place your check in the offering plate any Sunday. Elaine Alexander will be at the back of the church after the 11:00 service today if you would like to sign up for working on November 14th. Thanks so much for your HELP with this endeavor. *HYMN NCH "Won't You Let Me Be Your Servant" Tune Stuttgart *BENEDICTION *POSTLUDE Woodcarving Show TODAY The St. Louis Area Woodcarvers will again hold their annual show and sale on October The show will be open today from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
