Remembrance of the past is combined with preparation for the future. Memory meets action. In a certain sense, the Mass is an Advent prayer. At the Last Supper, Jesus did not tell his disciples, Never forget what I did for you. Instead, he said, Do this in remembrance of me. He calls us to remember by doing, to combine memory with action. In the celebration of the Eucharist, remembering and doing become one. Jesus is as present in our midst as he was in that upper room, breaking the bread and sharing the cup; but it is a new kind of presence, seen only with the eyes of faith. In the heavenly liturgy, there will be no need of sacraments, for there, celebration is wholly communion and feast (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1136). Here, things are different. We have only glimpses and flashes of the beauty that is yet to be. And yet, in the liturgy, we truly participate in the heavenly liturgy. The Mass is our foretaste of the joys of heaven. We need your help with the meal, especially cooked and sliced turkeys, large packages of dressing or mashed potatoes, large cans or pans of sweet potatoes, small marshmallows, relish tray items and desserts. If you are able to help us with these items, please bring the cooked items to Noonan Hall on Saturday the 18th after 7:30AM. We appreciate your taking any non perishable items to the Church Office, before the 18 th to aid in our planning. We served a tremendous crowd at the Thanksgiving meal so we anticipate needing lots of food. Prayers accepted all the time. We try to give out bags of food on an every other week basis so we have an ongoing need all the time. You have been very generous in this regard for which we thank you on behalf of the poor. 5 Segundo Domingo de Adviento - 5 de diciembre 2010 Page 5 Segundo Domingo de Adviento 5 de diciembre de 2010 Así como las aguas colman el mar, así está lleno el país de la ciencia del Señor. Isaías 11:9 LARGA ESPERA A medida que transcurren los domingos de Adviento el foco de las lecturas cambia de la venida final del Señor a su histórico nacimiento. Las lecturas de hoy mezclan ambos. Isaías, desilusionado de los reyes de sus tiempos, imagina al rey ideal que gobernará con la aprobación de Dios y será guiado por la divina sabiduría. Por siglos el pueblo judío anticipó la llegada de ese Mesías, quien inauguraría una era de gracia cuando todo el mundo finalmente viviría en justicia y paz. Luego de siglos de creciente expectativa, la predicación de Juan Bautista sobre la inminente llegada del Mesías no hizo más que provocar un intenso interés. El mensaje del Bautista sobre el que viene (Mateo 3:11) deja claro que Jesús, de hecho, es aquel esperado por largo tiempo que inaugura la nueva era predicha por Isaías y todos los profetas.
