An answer from Catholic Tradition needs to start with reminding ourselves that respect for the dignity of the human person, who is a union of body and soul, is a core moral principle. We must keep this in mind as we make decisions throughout life and into death. Cremation is not forbidden by the Church, but the scattering of ashes is. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, The Church permits cremation, provided that it does not demonstrate a denial of faith in the resurrection of the body (CCC 2301). The scattering of ashes represents a denial of our Christian belief in the resurrection of the body in both its communal and individual elements. The cremated remains represent the human person and are a sign of how God blessed us through this person. Dispersing these ashes over a lake or field is inappropriate because final closure to our earthly life should include remaining with the community of faith, even in death, as we await the resurrection of the body. The remains also symbolize the individuality of that person, and burying them in consecrated ground or putting them in a columbarium honors the unique sacredness of the person s life. That s why Catholic cemeteries provide space for the remains of those who are cremated. It also provides a place where loved ones can show respect for the remains a place and space that doesn t exist when cremated remains are scattered. Source: Liguorian, February 2011 Sundaybulletin@Liguori.org A Word From Pope Francis Let us ask ourselves...in adoring Christ who is really present in the Eucharist: do I let myself be transformed by him? Do I let the Lord who gives himself to me guide me to going out ever more from my little enclosure in order to give, to share, to love him and others? Brothers and sisters, following, communion, sharing. Let us pray that participation in the Eucharist may always be an incentive: to follow the Lord every day, to be instruments of communion, and to share what we are with him and with our neighbor. Lighthouse Media - Catholic CD s Thank you for all you are doing to support this important trip. Friendly Reminder The Presence of Jesus Christ in our sanctuary elevates the holiness of our worship space. In reverence for Christ present in the tabernacle, and in respect for brothers and sisters who may be praying, we can help each other maintain the Sacred Silence of our space both during and outside Mass. If conversation is necessary in the church, please whisper. Visiting with each other before and after Mass is a good thing! But when socializing begins in the church, smile and gently remind each other to carry it into the narthex or hallway. Found in the Narthex - inventory changes regularly. Featured CD of the week ~ Love Sacrifice Trust by Fr. Michael Schmitz $3.00 per CD Eucharistic Adoration Jesus loved each of His Apostles very dearly. In the Garden of Gethsemane on the night before He was to die, He invited His friends to stay with Him, to watch with Him, and to pray. He knew His earthly suffering and death was drawing near. He also knew that His friends would face very difficult times ahead, and that they would need the strength that only He could provide. Jesus Christ offers us that same strength, comfort, and peace in the challenges and difficulties we face in our lives today. He calls us, and yearns for us to draw close to Him, to seek His Peace, and to rest in His Presence. Accept His invitation. Come spend some time with our Lord in Eucharistic Adoration: Thursdays following the 9am Mass until 7pm. For more information, contact Barbara in the parish office: directorofworship@holyfamilycaledonia.org ext. 238 Diocesan Publications Representative Coming to Holy Family! Next week, Bill Cross, a representative from our bulletin publisher, Diocesan Publications, will be seeking new and renewing present parish bulletin ads. If you are interested in advertising please call the parish office for contact information. We feel this is an excellent opportunity for local businesses to increase their visibility in the community. Advertising in the bulletin allows this publication to be printed each week at no cost to the parish. Men! Here is a Great Way to Start Your Saturday Morning! Men s Prayer Group meets every Saturday morning 6-8 AM at the church and includes time of Eucharistic Adoration, praying the Rosary, reading the upcoming Sunday readings, listening to a homily by Bishop Barron, and good fellowship! Come join us! Please Patronize Our Sponsors This bulletin is furnished to the parish without charge. Please patronize our sponsors and thank them for their generosity. Advertisements that appear completely defray publishing costs, which the church would otherwise incur.
