Secularism is a philosophical movement that has its roots in England in the 1850s. The movement began because some felt religion and the Bible were inadequate sources for explaining many aspects of modern life. Secularists believe you can find all motivation for living a moral life in what is readily observable. Thus, secularism sees the Christian religion, and in fact all religions, as worthless. Some might argue that secularism is the same as the separation of Church and state, that public schools should give a secular education, that they shouldn t be teaching the Christian, or any, religion. At first glance, that may sound right, but it isn t. A Catholic second-grade public school teacher should not teach Catholic doctrine to her class in the same way that a Baptist second-grade public school teacher should not teach Baptist doctrine to his class, but the faith of the Catholic or the Baptist should influence the way they teach their class. They might not teach specific doctrine, but the way each approaches the class should be done as one who has faith in Jesus Christ. The same is true of a politician or someone who works at a fast-food restaurant. In implicit ways, our faith in Jesus should always influence what we say and do. A Word From Pope Francis Fr. Patrick Keyes, CSsR Sundaybulletin@Liguori.org Don t forget this! The Ascension of Jesus into heaven acquaints us with this deeply consoling reality on our journey: In Christ, true God and true man, our humanity was taken to God. Christ opened the path to us. 5 AROUND THE PARISH AND COMMUNITY May 21, 2017: The Ascension of the Lord A Family Perspective by Bud Ozar As Jesus appointed apostles, he also appoints parents to represent Him in the family; make disciples of your children, baptizing and teaching them all I have taught you. Don t worry, I am with you always. Coffee and Donut Ministry Our Coffee and Donut Ministry is taking a break for the summer months and will return after Labor Day. Thank you to all of those who helped serve coffee and donuts this past year. Charity Baseball Game Save the Date! Fr. Loc will be playing in the Catholic Charities West Michigan Padres vs. The Media Giants game. Thursday, June 15 at 6:30pm at Fifth Third Ball Park. Join us in cheering for him as well as many other local priests! All proceeds benefit Catholic Charities. Friendly Reminder The Presence of Jesus Christ in our sanctuary elevates the holiness of our worship space. In reverence for Christ present in the tabernacle, and in respect for brothers and sisters who may be praying, we can help each other maintain the Sacred Silence of our space both during and outside Mass. If conversation is necessary in the church, please whisper. Visiting with each other before and after Mass is a good thing! But when socializing begins in the church, smile and gently remind each other to carry it into the narthex or hallway. Why Not Today? Many people strive to leave behind something of worth. Roberta King s father was no exception. When he died, his Estate was well planned, and Roberta was tasked with distributing the money he d left. The process of doling out the checks to the organizations her father loved not only brought joy and pride to her heart it helped ease her grief. Of the experience Roberta wrote, Yes, I did receive a nice inheritance, but the gift my dad gave me was a deeper understanding in a very personal way the importance of volunteering and financially supporting a community that you love. Have you considered the legacy you ll leave behind? And if so, why wait until after you're gone to impact the ones you love? Harness the power of today with these ideas: 1. Give together. Include your loved ones in giving. Introduce them to worthy ministries and organizations and share your passion. 2. Choose today. What about giving to your loved ones now? Why not bless the people you care about when you can see the blessing and reaction it creates first-hand? For the full version of this article, request a FREE copy of 3 Ways to Harness the Power of Now by contacting Mark Morrow of the Catholic Foundation of West Michigan, at (616) or mmorrow@catholicfoundationwm.org - or bless your family today with a Christ-centered will at Volunteers Needed: Prison/Jail Ministry Attend an Information Session We are currently seeking volunteers to serve at Kent County Jail Muskegon Juvenile Detention Center Muskegon County Jail. Any person having reasonable cause to suspect sexual abuse of a minor by a member of the clergy (bishop, priest or deacon) or by any person acting under the authority or apparent authority of the church, is urged to contact the Victim Assistance Coordinator: Diocese of Grand Rapids Cathedral Square Center, 360 Division Avenue S, Grand Rapids, MI Individuals who believe they were sexually abused as a minor by a priest or deacon are urged to follow the same reporting procedure. The report should include details of the suspected abuse, such as the name of the minor, the name of the abuser, names of witnesses or potential witnesses, date and place of the occurrence and any other relevant information. As an alternative, a report may be made to the Department of Human Services for the applicable county.
