3 Our Lady of Fatima: Celebrating a Century of Her Message May 13, 2017 marked the 100 th Anniversary of Our Lady's first appearance to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. To commemorate this great event, Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Grand Rapids is holding a six-month series. The evenings begin at 6:30 PM and include an address on the Fatima Message, the Rosary, Solemn Benediction and convivial activities. For more information, visit: Speakers: Tuesday, June 13: Fr. Robert Sirico Tuesday, July 11: His Eminence Francis Cardinal Arinze Sunday, August 13: Sister Mary Anne Zuberbueler, O.P. Wednesday, September 13: His Excellency Bishop David Walkowiak Friday, October 13: Marian Concert: Singing Our Lady s Praise (celebrating the life and virtues of Our Lady through music) Thank you all to who contributed to this year s Catholic Services Appeal. Through your generous contributions we have over $130,422 pledged. The only disappointing part to this is that we only have participation from 35% from the parish. I would still challenge those who have yet to make a contribution to this important ministry that serves so many in so many areas of our Diocese and beyond to take a leap of faith and either give a one time donation or make a pledge. Make a sacrificial pledge as I know it will make you feel good. Again, it is not too late and we are still accepting donations and pledges. So if the spirit moves you, drop your envelope in the basket at church or drop it by the parish office. As I mentioned back in April at the start of the campaign, the dove (Holy Spirit) on our poster has flown off the board since we made our dollar amount, but you can make your heart fly a little higher by helping us raise the participation rate! Thanks again for giving! Our Coffee and Donut Ministry is taking a break for the summer months and will return after Labor Day. Thank you to all of those who helped serve coffee and donuts this past year. What Makes a Dad God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle's flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities, When there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it... Dad We are looking to recruit additional help for next fall. Many hands are needed to help continue this very popular ministry. If you can pour coffee and lemonade, set out boxes of donuts and empty a garbage can once in awhile this ministry is something you could do! Please contact the parish office to inquire about volunteering. Protecting God s Children Awareness Sessions All adults (18 or older), who have contact with children here at Holy Family Parish, MUST attend a Protecting God s Children Awareness Session. Spend time educating yourself in the prevention and awareness of sexual abuse, it is well worth the time. If you are a grandparent, parent or childcare provider, it will benefit you. Upcoming Sessions: St. Robert of Newminster Parish June 8 at 6:30pm Holy Family Parish October 26 at 6:00pm To register for this session, please go to click on registration listed on the left side of the screen, and follow the prompts. If you don t have internet access or have questions, contact Jim Beauchamp at

4 Liturgical Reasons to Celebrate June! The Feast of Pentecost (June 4): the coming down of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles; considered the birthday of the Church. The word Pentecost is Greek and means 50th day. We celebrate Pentecost 50 days after Easter The Most Holy Trinity (June 11): always celebrated one week after Pentecost; honors the fundamental belief in our Triune God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) (June 18): commemorates the institution of the Holy Eucharist The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus (June 23): falls 19 days after Pentecost, on a Friday; we celebrate Christ s Love for humanity The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist (June 24) Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles (June 29) Want to be part of a Holy Family Legacy? Since July 1983, Holy Family has sponsored blood drives for Michigan Blood. This life saving community service has collected 6,319 pints of blood over the last 34 years. Currently Holy Family hosts six blood drives a year, collecting over 300 units. The blood drive is run by a chairperson, whose job is to oversee the blood drive, recruit donors thru bulletin articles with four churches and coordinate volunteers who assist with the drive. We are currently looking for a new chairperson to take over the blood drives starting in Nov The time commitment is about 10 hours each month: Jan, Mar, May, July, Sept and Nov. The current chairperson, Char Mello is willing to assist and mentor anyone who is interested in this life saving ministry. If you are interested in continuing this rewarding legacy, please contact Char Mello at or the Holy Family office. Make a Connection That Could Heal Donate Blood Thank you to all who gave the gift of life by donating blood at the Caledonia Community Churches drive on May donors attempted to donate, with a total of 50 (4 over goal) pints of blood collected and one first time donor. We are blessed to have such dedicated blood donors. A special thank you to all volunteers who support this lifesaving ministry: Anna & Jean Stover, Jill Wolfe, Marilyn Overbeek, Shirley Campbell, Emily Bishop, Jim Shoaf and office staff at each church. Congratulations to those who earned their respective blood donation gallon levels: Frank Baron (5 gallons), Beth Bouman (4 gallons), Steve Feuerstein (2 gallons), Rhonda Kribs (3 gallons), Pete Murray (6 gallons) and Wendy Rigley (3 gallons). Eight donations = one gallon. The next community blood drive at Holy Family is to honor Katie Fairchild with the 2 nd Annual Kind Like Katie drive on July 11 (Tuesday). Did you know that by signing up for the blood drive a month before will assist the blood center in assigning the correct number of staff to support the blood drive as well as reduce recruitment calls to you. If interested in donating blood you may sign up in the ministry hall, online at or call Char Mello, chairperson Please join us for good fellowship and trail mix. Childcare provided by appointment. 4

5 I recently received this from a Catholic Church evangelization initiative: Is your parish bringing new members into the Catholic Church each year? Are your parishioners inviting and welcoming inquirers with no church family? Many Catholics treasure the gift of their Catholic faith and are open to sharing their faith with others. But when asked if they have ever invited an unchurched person to explore the Catholic way of life, they respond with remarks and questions like I m not sure what to say! Isn t that the job of our pastor and staff? I feel uncomfortable discussing my faith with others. What if someone ask a question that I don t know how to answer? In the midst of this Catholic hesitancy to invite, many seekers with no church family would welcome an invitation to learn more about the Catholic faith. If you are living your faith, sharing how the Lord works in your life, and open to conversations, then you can do this! If you have found a new great restaurant, you won t keep it to yourself! If you are a fan of a certain sports team, you don t keep it to yourself! Share your faith! Jesus commissioned us to tell the Good News, to bring others to Him! Always feel free to invite someone to Mass with you or to a parish event. Introduce them to others in the Catholic Faith. Give them some good Catholic websites, blogs, pamphlets or books. And, if you ever need a little help or want some encouragement or direction for the next step in sharing your faith with someone, feel free to contact the Parish Office and we would be happy to show you a few things that might help you along. Talk to your co-workers about your faith, talk to the person next to you at your kids ballgame about your faith, post about what God is doing in your life on Facebook, ask someone where they go to church. More people are seeking than are not. Be Christ in their life, guiding them to the Truth they are seeking. Sometimes the person we begin talking to was raised in the Catholic Church and for no big reason, wandered away from the faith. Other times, the person we begin talking to has always felt a connection to the Catholic Faith and just needs to be invited to learn more. While we have the Inquiry or PreCatechumenate phase of the RCIA to explore Catholicism and faith and discern whether becoming Catholic is for the seeker, the first step is usually a conversation with a Catholic that makes them realize their desire to learn more. If you have an inkling or call about anyone around you, start talking and nudging now. Feel free to contact me with any questions. Prayers for you to courageously and lovingly share your faith so that others may come to know the Christ we proclaim! Christine Shafer AND YOU ARE, dear brothers and sisters, the face of Jesus. Pope Francis Food Pantry Volunteers Needed Our food pantry has grown to serve nearly 75 families a month! We need help to provide this important work of mercy. Volunteers are needed to pick up food from stores and partner non-profits twice a month, organize and stock shelves weekly, shop for non-food items once a month, and to keep track of client database. We also need an overall coordinator for our service to these families. If you are able to help or would like more information, please call the parish office at WESTERN WEEK IS COMING JUNE 20-23, 2017 Lots of family friendly events planned for this year. 5
