A wise and holy priest once told me that there were times when his only felt connection to God came in listening to his conscience. Prayer is dry and without feeling, the mass becomes routine with no inspiration, the Church seems terribly slow and out of touch with real life.... God seems so distant. At such moments the only light that shown in his darkness was the light of his conscience. Sometimes God lets this happen. So let s look at Conscience to see how we might meet God. First off conscience is a judgement of reason which moves a person to do good and avoid evil. It recognizes the authority of truth pointing to God, the Supreme Good. When he listens to his conscience, the prudent man can hear God speaking. (Catechism of The Catholic Church. P 438). Think of a lantern you carry into a dark room. The light makes visible what is real and present. Reason is that light humans have in their very nature. It is our ability to swim in an ocean of truth. Reason must be accompanied by freedom and will. Without these two an act has no responsibility (morality) attached to it. Without freedom an act is coerced. Without our will we haven t chosen or owned the act; it is merely accidental or unintentional. ***************************** So how does all this connect me to God? Well... following my conscience is to experience the messenger of Him, who, speaks to us behind a veil. (John Henry Cardinal Newman 1885). The problem today is we lack the training to become sufficiently present to ourselves. There is a certain interiority required to hear and follow the voice of our conscience. It comes from prayer, quiet time with ourselves, good reading, virtuous friendships. Kids especially need help putting down their iphones to listen to their own thoughts and feelings - - their own personhood. This quiet opens the door for the Holy Spirit with his gifts to present the knowledge and practice of the interior law. Parents. You have the best seat in the house when it comes to teaching conscience. You are there to help your child listen to that voice in your heart. You are there to celebrate and praise the times your child does the right thing (thus adding to the voice of conscience that they just heard and followed). You are also there when the voice of conscience went unheeded and dishonesty or meanness came forth. Parents, you need to sit and lovingly help your child see and hear that inner voice. Not every instance require this teaching moment but sometimes God just puts it on a platter for you. Use it! Share a suitable moment from your life when you listened (or didn t) to your conscience. A true life story from mom and dad! ******************************* In the end you are giving your child a compass, a tool that will guide them in moments of temptation and confusion. You give them a connection to their true selves and to God. For man has in his heart a law inscribed by God... it is his most secret core and sanctuary. There he is alone with God whose vice echoes in his depths. (Vatican II, Gaudium et Spes #16). God s got you... quit squirming! Fr. Holy Trinity Church, Webster, New York September 30, 2018 From the Faith Formation Office FIRST PENANCE & FIRST EUCHARIST PARENT MEETINGS Parents of children that are currently enrolled in Grade Two, either in a Public School or Catholic School, should plan on attending one of the following meetings about preparing for and receiving the Sacraments of First Penance and First Eucharist (Communion). The meetings will be held on: TUESDAY, OC- TOBER 2nd and WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3rd. Both meetings begin at 7:00 pm and will be held in the Gathering Space. PARENTS ONLY NEED TO ATTEND ONE OF THESE MEETINGS! At these meetings you will register your child to prepare for and receive the Sacraments of Penance and Eucharist. You will also receive a calendar with all of the important dates you will need. Children must be registered for these classes, and have completed Grade One Faith Formation either in a Catholic School or in our Parish Faith Formation Program. CHILDREN S LITURGY of the WORD Children s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) begins on Sunday, October 7 during our 10:30 am. Mass. Children ages 4-9 are invited to participate in this special celebration where they will be led through prayers, songs and readings that are simplified just for them. After the opening prayer, Father will invite the children to go with the Liturgical Leader to celebrate CLOW in a designated classroom. The Leader will then return with the children to the assembly for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. We are currently looking for adults and teens willing to be a part of this ministry of faith sharing. Molly Ayer takes a position helping an elderly woman named Vivian and discovers that they are more alike than different as she helps Vivian solve a mystery from her past. If you have been coming to Mass for a while, but are not Catholic, or were baptized Catholic but did not receive further training in the faith, we have an opportunity that may be of interest to you. Our parish will soon begin sessions to share the richness of the Catholic faith in an open and welcoming environment. Altar Candles will burn this week for the following special intentions. St. Joseph s Altar Candle will burn in loving memory of Peter Wilbert, req. Bea Hepburn. If you would like a candle in memory of a loved one or for special intentions, please call the parish office. A REMINDER: If you need a devotional candle lit immediately for a loved one, a special occasion, or special intentions, you are invited to light the small votives that are on the side altars of the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph. They will burn for about 4-5 hours. Respect Life Month at Holy Trinity Adoration will begin Sunday, October 7 - Friday, October 12. We will never know peace until human life is cherished and respected the world over. We must pray for respect for the dignity of all human life. We must pray for peace. There are sign-up sheets at the Welcome Desk in the Gathering Space for anyone wishing to spend a quiet 30 or 60 minutes with our Lord during Respect Life Month. Your time is needed! In addition to Respect Life Adoration, we have Eucharistic Adoration every Thursday evening from 7:00-8:00 pm. Jesus says, Can you not watch with me for one hour. Blessing of Pets Bring your favorite friend for a blessing! The animals of God s creation inhabit the skies, the earth, and the sea. They share in the ways of humans. They have a part in our lives. St. Francis recognized this when he called the animals his brothers and sisters. Next Sunday, October 7, at noon, we will remember St. Francis and invoke God s blessing on our favorite companions. We will gather at the baseball field by the north parking lot after the 10:30 Mass. We will not do it if it is raining. Marian Retreat Day Experiencing the Fullness of the Gospel through the Rosary Legion of Mary is sponsoring a retreat on Saturday, October 6th from 8 am. - 3 pm. at St. Joseph s Church, Penfield. HOPE Ministry would like to express gratitude to everyone who participated in our annual garage sale. It was a week filled with fellowship, fun and hard work. This year we had 334 volunteers sign in plus the help of the Thomas football teams and Thomas soccer teams. We prayed together every morning, ate lunch together for 6 days, and priced items that we marveled over. Who knew there were can openers shaped like fish to open tuna cans? Or figures of people made from prunes? There is deep satisfaction from working together as a community. The money we raised will go to help low income people in Webster throughout the year. If you donated items, helped to set up and sell or shopped our event, we are most grateful.
