1 When We Hate. It s scary sometimes how deeply we can feel anger or resentment toward someone or some situation. I m not talking about being annoyed or frustrated, something you wish were different but hey, we ll deal with it. No this goes deeper. It surprises us with how hot it gets us; our reactions can be so strong that we say or do something that has devastating effects, sometimes for years. Try this one out - - did this ever happen in your family? It did mine. I was a teenager (I m guessing 13 or 14 yrs. old). I can t even remember the issue now (some minor no to something I wanted to do); but I remember the flash of intense anger I felt and the words I spoke to my mother. I hate you! I said. I wish I had a different mother! (I m feeling the shame of those words as I type this). My mother of course, being the adult and knowing her son could be a spiteful boy, walked away from this awful moment (perhaps to cry). I look back on this incident some 50 yrs. ago and wonder how my parents didn t put me up for sale! How can anger be so strong? How does it completely overwhelm our reason and better instincts? I don t know. It just does. It may go back millennia to the fury we needed to survive in the hostile environment of the animal wilderness. What I do know is... it is NOT God s will that we act that way. Rather, Get rid of all bitterness, passion and anger, no more hateful feelings. Instead, be kind and tenderhearted to one another, and forgive one another. Ephesians 4:31. ****************** This is exactly what my mother did. And in doing this selfless act of parenting she saved her son. Years later I would recall that moment to her and how her sad but silent walking away showed how much she loved me. For some it has been years since family members have spoken to each other. As I say, it s frightening how one moment of heated exchange can cost a lifelong friendship or worse, a brother or sister or parent. ****************** This same toxic anger is afflicting our political conversation. Both sides are infected, Democrats and Republicans. Each sees the opposing side as not just wrong or misguided, but they are seen rather as the enemy whose heart is wicked and whose intentions are cruel. So long as we see our opponents as lacking character or moral goodness, there is little hope we can work to solve our common problems. New effort must be constantly put forth to repair or renew tattered relationships no matter how many times it takes. This is hard work and requires a basic trust in our neighbor s goodness. Where do we get the will to start again with that stupid Democrat or blind Republican or foul mouthed child? It comes in knowing that, despite present appearances (!), this is a Child of God. Christ shed his blood for them and for me. So as scripture tells us we now have peace through the blood of Christ. With his own body (Christ) broke down the wall that kept them enemies. Eph. 2:14. In other words he died for us all. If he refuses no one his redeeming love, can we? Lord help us to turn the other cheek. It is your beloved child who strikes us. God bless your week. Fr. They are beginning to pile up. Please claim your dish as soon as possible. Thank You. College 101: Planning, Preparing, and Paying Seminar Sunday, November 2:00 pm. College is expensive, but knowledge is power! With that in mind, it is critical for parents to be informed about the many ways to reduce the expense of higher education, especially loan debt, while at the same time finding the best college fit for their children academically, socially, and for future career goals. Holy Trinity Church invites all parents of high school students to a free, one-hour educational seminar called, College 101: Planning, Preparing, and Paying for College on Sunday, November 18 at 2:00 pm. at Holy Trinity Church in the Gathering Space. It will be presented by Dean Condon of College Assistance Plus, a national college consulting company based in Honeoye Falls, NY. Learn about college selectivity, applications, college costs, financial aid, and scholarships. Take home real-world solutions for mitigating the cost of sending your student to college without jeopardizing your family s financial future! Registration is requested. All are welcome! Holy Trinity Church, Webster, New York From the Faith Formation Office There is a basket of the blue Children s Envelopes outside the Faith Formation Office. Each box contains a full 12 months of offertory envelopes for children to use for their very own act of giving. This is a wonderful way to teach children how to give back to their community...not only through their time and talent but also to set aside and give some of their treasure. Please take only one box per family to share as there is a limited supply. GETTING READY FOR ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS Advent begins on Sunday, December 2 and we are inviting all families to play a special role in our celebration each week by lighting the candles on the Advent Wreath before Mass. If your family would like to participate in this beautiful ritual, please see the sign-up sheet in the Gathering Space, or contact the Faith Formation Office. The Children's Christmas Pageant will be held on Sunday, December 16 at 12:15 pm. in the church. All ages from 3 years old and up are welcome to be in the pageant. We need angels, shepherds, animals and especially the Holy Family! We are also looking for narrators and singers...as well as Parent Volunteers willing to help. Practices begin on Sunday, December 2 at 11:45 am. in the Gathering Space. There are only 2 practices (Dec. 2 and Dec. 9). There is a Sign-Up Sheet at the Welcome Desk in the Gathering Space for all who are interested. Take some time out during this busy time of year and spend it with these precious children as they re-tell the story of the birth of our Savior. BRINGING FAITH HOME What is your Story? One of the best ways to share our faith with our children is to tell them our story - a personal story about you and God. Don t think you have one? We bet you do think of a time when you were confronted with something bigger than yourself. It could have been something happy or scary, exciting or daunting, momentous or simply calming. But in there somewhere was God. So we encourage you to find your story and then share that with your children. Creating a Safe Environment Education for Volunteers All volunteers who work with children, youth or vulnerable adults must participate in Creating a Safe Environment (C.A.S.E.) Training before they begin their ministry, and must renew their CASE certification every 3 years. We offer in-person C.A.S.E. Training every month at Holy Trinity. If you volunteer in any capacity in our parish or related ministries and you are not sure if you need to take this course, or if you need to register for an upcoming training session, contact our Safe Environment Coordinator, Tricia Kull, at (585)

They will burn for about 4-5 hours. Adopt a Family at Christmas Christmas time causes us to think of gathering friends and family together for a delicious meal. We look forward to opening bright packages. But this season can be especially stressful for those who struggle all year to make ends meet. HOPE Ministry provides Christmas food and gifts for children. Would you be willing to adopt a family this Christmas? Many area businesses, organizations, scout troops, clubs, individuals and families have adopted a family by providing food and gifts for the children. We share the wish list and guidance; you supply the Christmas spirit! We are asking for some help in pulling out old hymnals and replacing them with new ones. If you would like to help, please meet in church on Wednesday, November 28 at 9:30 am. (after the 9:00 am. Mass) Thank you! Hopefully everyone has received the Catholic Ministries Appeal mailing by this time and has had a chance to review the materials. Extra copies of the brochure are available in church. The theme for this year s campaign is Sharing Our Blessings. The CMA affords each of us an opportunity to support the larger Church so that it can meet real needs throughout the Diocese. Your support enables the Church to be responsive and caring.
