3 09 JUL (Tuesday): SAINT AUGUSTINE ZHAO HONG and COMPANIONS, Martyrs (d. ~1815) The Martyrs of China, they were imprisoned and died for their faith and work. Augustine was a soldier who escorted Saint Gabriel John Tauin du-fresse to Beijing during his missionary work. Augustine became a convert to Christianity and a priest, working in the Sichuan apostolic vicarate. 13 JUL (Saturday): SAINT HENRY, Holy Roman Emperor ( ) ( Good King ) Henry became Duke of Bavaria upon his father s death, and ascended to the throne of Germany in He was later crowned King of Pavia, Italy and became Holy Roman Emperor in 1014, the last of the Saxon dynasty of emperors. Henry founded schools, quelled rebellions, protected the frontiers, worked to establish a stable peace in Europe, and to reform the Church while respecting its independence. He organized his many followers into 12 monasteries, including Monte Cassino, which became the birthplace of Western monasticism. The rule he wrote for his monks prescribed common sense, moderate asceticism, prayer, study, work and community life under one superior. 5 From the Holy See THE HOLY FATHER S PRAYER INTENTIONS Each month His Holiness asks for general and missionary prayer intentions. For July 2013, the Holy Father s prayer intentions are: General: World Youth Day That World Youth Day in Brazil may encourage all young Christians to become disciples and missionaries of the Gospel. Missionary: Asia That throughout Asia doors may be open to messengers of the Gospel. LITURGICAL TERMS YOU NEED TO KNOW With the new focus on liturgy, it s time to brush up on our liturgical vocabulary, so we ll know how to refer to different things connected with the Mass. Here are seven terms you may find helpful to know. Antiphon Greek, anti- opposite + phonē voice. A short text, typically from Scripture and often used as a refrain said by the congregation (e.g., during the Responsorial Psalm), though it has other uses in the liturgy. Collect One of the Introductory Rites. It is a prayer that varies depending on the liturgical day. It follows the Gloria and concludes the Introductory Rites. Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion A person authorized to distribute Holy Communion, either for a particular occasion or in a more stable fashion, due to extraordinary circumstances such as lack of ordinary ministers of Holy Communion. The ordinary ministers of Holy Communion are bishops, priests, and deacons. All others are extraordinary. Note that the term extraordinary minister of Holy Communion is the correct term. Terms such as extraordinary minister of the Eucharist, eucharistic minister, and special minister are all incorrect. Ordinary of the Mass Those parts of the Mass that do not change based on the liturgical day. Also called the ordinary. Compare with Proper of the Mass. Proper of the Mass Those parts of the Mass that change based on the liturgical day. Also called the proper or the proper of the day. Compare with Ordinary of the Mass. Rubrics Instructions printed in red in a liturgical book (e.g., the Roman Missal) that direct the actions of those participating in a liturgical celebration. Rubrics are typically scattered among the text of the prayers (which are printed in black).
