5 9 MINISTRY OF THE ASSEMBLY To gather as a community To listen, reflect, respond To bring our gifts We recognize the importance of welcoming by greeting one anothe in the parking lot, as we enter the church and in the worship space. With united hearts and voices we begin the liturgy. As Spirit-filled assembly, we recognize Christ's presence in our midst and prepare to encounter the Lord in word and sacrament. The Christian assembly, catechumens and faithful, are formed by the word of God Sunday after Sunday. Our stories are proclaimed, our hearts are touched, a response is given. People who share life together need to tell over and over the stories that explain God's saving action in their lives and who they are. We listen and ponder the word the Lord s peaks to each of us. We respond to it and acclaim it in faith. We bring gifts for the poor and the church. We give our very sel ves. This is a time of transition. The table is prepared for Eucharist. We proclaim our "Amen" to the mystery of faith celebrated in our midst and lived out in the days to come. We share the covenant meal. The holy communion, the bread and the cup, is the presence of the risen Christ in the gathered church. To scatter for mission Our commitment has been renewed. 7 Procedures to know 13 Procedures to know the altar server a. Holds Sacramentary (when and if desired) for Greeting, Penitential Rite, Opening Prayer. b. Prepares altar with corporal, chalice, Sacramentar after the General Intercessions and during the collection. c. Assists in the reception of the Gifts. d. Assists with the water and wine, and the washing of hands. e. Presents censer and boat, when used. f. Assists Ministers of Communion in clearing the altar and/or presenting water and wine for cleansing the vessels. g. Holds the Sacramentary for the final Prayer and Solemn Blessing Procedures to know 14 Procedures to know After the Liturgy, the altar server: a. Extinguishes the candles. b. Assists in the clean-up detail: censer, cruets, chalice, Sacramentary, etc. c. Returns alb, cassock, etc., to proper place. 7

Ritual The books of prayers for the various rites (sacraments) of the Church. Sacramentar The celebrant's book of prayers used within the Eucharistic Celebration. Sacred Vessels 16 G. Sacred Vessels (eacw, 96-97) Sacred vessels are to be made from materials which are solid and, in the common estimation of the respective country, considered noble. (GIRM, 290).. vessels which are to contain the Blood of the Lord must have a cup made of a material which does not absorb liquids. (GIRM, 291) Further information click here a. Chalice The vessel used at the Eucharistic celebration to hold the wine which becomes the blood of Christ. b. Ciborium A vessel with a cover in which breads are consecrated for distri bution and reserved in the tabernacle for distribution to the sick and for adoration. 8

9 Sacred Vessels Cont 17 c. Communion Basket or Plate The vessel used for consecration and distribution of the hosts to the people during the Eucharistic service. d. Cups and plates for use in distributing under both species f om several stations These may be kept on the credence table until the breaking of the bread. They are then brought to the altar and filled from the one large bread container and flagon(s) used during consecration. e. Monstrance A tall vessel used to expose the Blessed Sacrament. The top is u suall circular with simulated sun rays coming from the centre where the lunette is inserted. It is used for exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and at Benediction. Sacred Vessels Cont 18 f. Paten A saucer-like plate which the presider uses to hold a larger host or section of bread. g. Pyx A small vessel in which the Blessed Sacrament is placed when taken to the sick. 9

Alb The sacred vestment common to all ministers of every rank. (GIRM, 298). It is full length and of white or off-white color representing the rank of the baptized.. 10

11 Vestments - Chasuble 21 b. Chasuble The outer garment worn by the priest at Mass and services directly connected with Mass. Its color is in accordance with the liturgical season or the feast of the day. It is sleeveless. (GIRM, 299) Vestments Chasuble-alb 22 c. Chasuble-alb Full length, chasuble-shaped vestment without sleeves. May be used by concelebrants at a Eucharist. May be used by a presider (1) in Masses fo special groups, (2) in celebrations outside a sacred place, (3) in similar cases where, by reasons of the place or persons, its use seems advisable. 12 Vestments- Cope, Humeral Veil 23 d. Cope A mantle-like vestment which reaches from the shoulders to the ankles. It is open in front and clasped at the neck, having a flat hood that covers the shoulders. It is used in processions and various rites. e. Humeral Veil An oblong cloth worn over the shoulders. It is so arranged that it covers the hands and is used to carry sacred objects in procession and for Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament; its color is in accordance with the liturgica season or feast. 24 f. Ministerial Robes Special long vestments used by Eucharistic ministers, lectors, acolytes, choir members, etc. 1. Alb The long white robe used in liturgical ceremonies. 2. Cassock The long, outer, traditional gown, which may be black, white, or red. 3. Surplice A white linen, cotton or synthetic -fibre traditional garment with wide sleeves that reaches slightly below the hips and is worn over the cassock. 12

13 25 g. Stole The stole, a symbol of the liturgical leadership of the bishop, priests, and deacons, is a long band, worn about th neck by bishops and priests and over the left shoulder by deacons.
