1 The Beacon Dear People of St. Barnabas, July- August 2014 A sabbatical is a term that comes from the word Sabbath and means seven or seventh. It means a period of rest and an intermission in labor. It is usually taken in the seventh year of ordained ministry. It is a paid leave granted for rest, study, travel and reflection. As the Bishop stated in his address to the Convocation this year this is a year of sabbatical. Our own Canon to the Ordinary as well as our Bishop have or will be taking their Sabbaticals this year as we all begin our current ministries at approximately the same time. After 13 straight years of ordained ministry, I look forward to the opportunity to pause spiritually and reflect on what has occurred over the past 13 years. It will be a time of travel and exploring God s kingdom with my family. It will be a time of spiritual nourishment and balm for my soul as I plan to retreat (literally) to my seminary for worship, reflection and study. I am looking forward to hearing the Holy Spirit s will for me and my continued ministry here at St. Barnabas. It will be a time of rest for me physically so I may continue to meet the physical demands of ministry. As I reflect back over these past seven years with you, a few milestones stand out to me. The first of these milestones is the rebirth of St. Barnabas from a church almost in mission status to a church that is healthy and vibrant. The growth has been both in numbers, as we have celebrated new families join in our worship and witness to God s kingdom, as well as families bringing forth life into this parish and the world. I have been overjoyed that our own parish has grown together as a family through the understanding of the Faith through the Sacraments of Baptism, Marriage, Reconciliation and Confirmation. The second of these milestones has been the rebuilding of St. Barnabas. We have rebuilt, restored and renovated many parts of the church proper as well as other areas of the building throughout the years. We are ever so grateful for our many benefactors as well as for all of you who helped make this a possibility. I am grateful for the flexibility shown by our parish family each time we have been displaced from our beloved church. This shows me that the Church lies within each of you, not left stagnant within four walls. We have also witnessed the rebuilding of many ministries that had fallen dormant. We have become a Risen Congregation! We are a congregation looking to share the light and flame of the Holy Spirit to those outside of these walls as well as to each other. I have witnessed the outpouring of support and love from parishioners to those on the streets, in shops and at the bedside of tho se who grow close to meeting our Lord. We have carefully looked to uphold our duty to hand the Church (both building and organism, in Word and deed) to the next generation ready to serve our Risen Lord. Allow me to dispel concerns that have begun to circulate; this Sabbatical has not been ordered by the Bishop nor by my doctors. Furthermore, it is also not a time where I will begin looking for another parish. It is a gift granted by the Church to all ordained persons and for this opportunity I am grateful. My Sabbatical Leave will begin on Sunday, July 20th and I will return on Sunday, October 19th. During this time, arrangements have been made for Fr. Wilson and Fr. Dedmon to celebrate Sunday Masses and other Rites as needs arise during my absence. Fr. James and Fr. Wilson will share pastoral care of the parish family. Please call the parish office should you wish a pastoral visit. Pax tibi, Fr. Murphy 1

2 A note from the Senior Warden, Denis Root Our Priest and Rector is the spiritual leader of our parish. He is, by our choice of calling him as our rector, in complete charge of our parish church. His word is law in all of our corporate worship and in our church community. (Read and reread our canons) At St. Barnabas, the vestry does the business part of our governance, maintaining our facilities plus other properties for our Church, and managing the treasure offered up by the congregation for our needs. Vestry decisions are sometimes totally divergent from the spiritual aspects of our life together as they are business decisions. This is the way in our Anglican tradition. Our rector now has the wonderful opportunity to learn at the feet of two Archbishops of Canterbury at Nashota house in August. We should support his desire to accomplish this course. He could have chosen to take a six month sabbatical and frittered his time away on an extended vacation, but he chose to enhance his understanding of our leaders thinking. Rectors, like anyone else, need to get away and be refreshed with new and diverse ideas. Father Murphy has a great chance for personal renewal and we will be the benefactors of his great learning experience on sabbatical. The Vestry is proud of our priest and happy for this opportunity for him. I will now leave you with one of my favorite Bible verses Rejoice in the Lord always : and again I say, Rejoice. Philippians 4 : 4 KJV We all need to rejoice more - - quibble less. First Friday Dinners Because the First Friday fell on the 4th of July, the group will meet instead on the second Friday, July 11th. First Friday Diners will be meeting at Fulin's Asian Cuisine in the Avenue Shopping Center, 2615 Medical Center Parkway, 6 p.m. The menu is quite extensive and includes sushi, as well as many vegetarian dishes. Please contact Sharon Maby at or maby@bellsouth.net to make your reservations. 3 OUTREACH COMMITTEE: Robbie Williamson Recently Outreach was gifted the opportunity to be interviewed by our local Channel 6 along with Stephan Fudge, proprietor of Philliagos sandwich shop. Stephan wanted an opportunity to give back in some way to our community. He came up with the idea to have his customers bring in a canned good in exchange for a percentage off their lunch. The canned goods are delivered to St. Barnabas and we then give to those in need. It s a win -win for all. We are very thankful to Mr. Fudge for thinking of us and giving us the opportunity to be interviewed locally. St. Barnabas Episcopal Church Greeters As summer begins to get hotter and hotter, it seems that it's harder and harder to not sleep in on Sunday mornings... Be assured you are missed. Set those alarms and come enjoy the Sunday Church Services (and coffee hour to follow) with us. Now that we are back in the church proper, with the beautiful new décor and pews back in place, we can once again take delight in worshiping together each Sunday morning. Don't wait for fall... We look forward to seeing your bright and smiling faces throughout the summer. God Bless, Lee and Marianne Cavett, Greeter Co-chairpersons Thank you for serving as a Greeter after our Sunday Services. You are greatly appreciated. If you cannot serve on your scheduled date, please trade dates with another Greeter; then notify Marianne Cavett (by phone or by < macavett@aol.com > ) and our Church Secretary, by the Wednesday before the Service you are scheduled for; so change(s) can be made in the Sunday Church Bulletin s Worship List and also for the future date of the Greeter you traded with. Thank you and God Bless, Marianne and Lee Cavett, Greeter Co-Chairpersons 3

4 ORDER OF THE DAUGHTERS OF THE KING It s BABY TIME! Crawford and Fran Parrish are about to be grandparents twice! Daughter Jennifer Wilson and daughter-in-law Stephanie Parrish are expecting a girl (Cassida) and a boy (Tripp), respectively, within weeks of each other. The Daughters of the King celebrated the happy news with a DOUBLE BABY SHOWER! All the decorations were hand-made by members during a special craft day at the church. FLOWERS, A WISHING TREE AND TAGS, SERVING PLATES, BABY JAR FAVORS AND MORE WERE HAND-MADE BY SEVERAL MEMBERS OF THE DOK. THE BIG DAY (AND BELLIES) ARRIVE! JU LY 20 Stephanie and Jennifer bumped baby bumps; the luncheon table groaned under the weight of goodies; two mothers to-be, two grandmothers-to-be and one big sister-tobe at the Honor Table; Twenty-one well-wishers joined in the fun and literally showered the Mommies-to-be with gifts and love. 14 4
