1 Good News Letter Walking in His Light -together 26 th Sunday of Ordinary Time 30 th Sept 2018 Year B In today s Gospel we hear how Jesus reprimanded the disciples for their jealousy and suspicion because someone they didn t know was doing good in His name. Sometimes, like the disciples, we can refuse to acknowledge God s good work in the lives of others because they are not one of us, or because they belong to a different church, religion or ethnic group. We can also be dismissive of the good someone else is doing simply because it is not the way we would have done it, forgetting that the Holy Spirit works in many different ways in people s lives. Jealousy, envy, fear and suspicion are things we re all capable of, and can be seen when we feel insecure or threatened. All these are opposite to love. We were created in love, so that we could grow in love day by day looking out for each other s needs rejoicing when we see the goodness in others. May the Lord free us from any anger, jealousy, or obstacle that prevents us from building the kingdom of God in our community. May we try to be angels of light sowing hope, spreading our faith and rejoicing when we see anyone doing good. Then the Spirit of God will truly shine through our lives bringing His love to those we meet. May we imitate Jesus who always welcomes...heals and rejoices! Praise Him!! 4 On Family Fast Day (Friday 5 th October), CAFOD invites us to eat simply perhaps having a bowl of soup instead of a meal and give the money to help those in need. CHURCH CHUCKLES Doctor Simon is known throughout London as one of the best consultants on arthritis. He always has a waiting room full of people who need his advice and specialist treatment. One day, Hetty, an elderly lady, slowly struggles into his waiting room. She is completely bent over and leans heavily on her walking stick. A chair is found for her. Eventually, her turn comes to go into Doctor Simon s office. 5 minutes later, to everyone s surprise, she comes briskly out of his room walking almost upright. She is holding her head high and has a smile on her face. A woman in the waiting room says to Hetty, "It's unbelievable, a miracle even. You walk in bent in half and now you walk out erect. What a fantastic doctor he is. Tell me, what did Doctor Simon do to you?" "Miracle, says Hetty, "he just gave me a longer walking stick!" CHILDRENS CHUCKLES Q: What did the judge say to the dentist? A: Do you swear to pull the tooth, the whole tooth, and nothing but the tooth? Q: Why did the banana go to the hospital? A: He was peeling really bad. Q: What do you call a group of disorganized cats? A: A cat-tastrophe.

5 LIGHT FOR LIFE Southport Charity Light for Life for local homeless people are holding a fund-raising event at All Saints Church Hall, Park Rd, on Friday 19 th Oct at 7.30pm. Entertainment will be a Musical Evening by John Andrew s Ukelele Band and the U.3.A choir. Please support this very worthy cause by buying tickets 6 including refreshments, or giving a donation. Tickets are available at St Patrick s Parish Office and donations may be left there. THANK YOU May we thank Fr John and all our friends at St Patrick s for the beautiful flower arrangement and bottle of wine, cards and best wishes on the occasion of our 60 th wedding anniversary. 8 LIFE AND SOUL An evening of prayer and praise before the Blessed Sacrament. St John Stone, Sandbrook Way, Southport, will hold an evening of praise and worship music with scripture and reflections before the Blessed Sacrament on Tuesday 2nd October starting at 7:00pm and ending at 8:00pm with Benediction. The evening will be led by Animate, the Archdiocesan Youth Ministry Team. 9 Novena to the Immaculate Conception In the Papal Mass in Dublin August 26 th I stood with nearly a quarter of a million followers of Jesus as Pope Francis spoke these astonishing words "sustain and increase this state of shame and give us the strength to work for justice"...these words, accompanied by asking the Lord for forgiveness 7 times, were in response to the devastating news of the abuse that has taken place in Ireland and many other places in the world. My eyes fill with tears with Pope Francis for all those who've felt hurt and betrayed by people representing the Church...and as I remember the spontaneous applause from the crowd to this heartfelt prayer of the Pope, expressing 'we agree, approve, love, care'. A few days before this Pope Francis wrote a letter to all the People of God across the world addressing the reality of the stench of abuse in some parts of the Church and how we must combat it together. He proposes two gifts we can use to bring healing to so much suffering :- prayer and fasting. We can do this individually of course but I would like to offer the following as our communal response as the People of God of St Marie's and St Patrick's - a Novena of Healing, 9 Friday's before the feast of the Immaculate Conception (October 5, 12,19, November 2,9,16,23,30 and December 7th), 7-8p.m. at St Patrick's in the form of a Holy Hour. Joined in prayer with Mary, the Immaculate Mother of God, may our prayer and fasting bring healing and peace to all who suffer...and may it help our beloved Church to shine brightly as a beacon of hope!

10 We will be celebrating the start of the Christmas season again this year with the annual Fair on Saturday 1st December in St Pat s hall and club. The money raised from this will go to the redecoration of St Patrick's Church and the new boiler for St Marie's Church. Volunteers both for the day and to help in the run up are much needed. Please call Nicky on and we can chat through what help you can be. Thanks again in anticipation for the usual volunteers and donations. What makes it a great day are the kind gifts you all donate - bakers we need cakes, traditionally bottles from the gents for tombola and from the ladies a fancy gift for the stalls. We will put a list of items that go into the hampers at the back of the churches if you can help in any way with these. Toys if in good condition - we have had very little take up on books in previous years so please no books / cd and dvd's as they prove difficult to dispose of. Thanks to St Pat s school for the mufti days on the 3 Fridays in advance. We will be at the back of church selling raffle tickets and watch this space for more updates.
