Saint Joseph's Carpenter The Newsletter of the People of Saint Joseph s Episcopal Church 3300A South Seacrest Blvd., Boynton Beach, FL (561) [ info@stjoesweb.org] EASTER 2007 Volume 22, Issue 2 From the Rector I wasn t sure of the focus for our meeting, but it sounded urgent from the frantic tone of voice on the other end of my cell phone. We agreed to meet in my office in a few hours, but they arrived at the parish office a little ahead of our mutually agreed upon Fr. Marty Zlatic time. Upon entering the church office that Thursday morning, they squeezed by the boxes on the floor and the two visitors already occupying the chairs in front of Parish Administrator Charlotte s desk. We know we re early, but we re here to see Fr. Marty at 10:00am, they said. Since there was no where else to sit in the front office, the office volunteer suggested that they sit in the finance office. However, all the space in that office was already occupied by the other volunteers who were busily preparing the weekly offering deposit. Peering into that office, they noticed the finance volunteers walking sideways to squeeze past each other, trying to navigate the boxes of small group materials, A/V equipment, and various filing boxes that filled the floor space. Looking back quizzically at the office volunteer and shrugging their shoulders, they seemed to ask with their facial expression, Where do we wait? Instead, what one of them vocalized was, Could you tell me where the restroom is located? Yes, replied the volunteer. Just go through to the back hallway, and turn left. You ll see it down past the kitchen. You ll see a huge stack of paper goods just before the door. Navigating past the finance volunteers required her to imitate the side-stepping she had observed the finance volunteers do. Squeezing past the open file cabinet, she entered the back hallway. Immediately her gaze fell upon boxes upon boxes of paper, various boxes and containers of kitchen goods, anything from dried pasta to tablecloths. She softly sighed as she made it to the bathroom door, as she silently congratulated herself on making it through the maze without tripping. Upon opening the bathroom door, an Oh My escaped from her lips as she was astounded to see more boxes filling the space beneath the wash basins. 1 She wedged her way back down the hallway to notice that the back door to the rector s office was now open, and her husband stood inside the door. Entering the office, she saw me picking up boxes and relocating them on top of other boxes, in order to make a place on the couch for them to sit. When I make eye contact with her, I smiled and extended my hand as I said, Please excuse the mess. She responded with, Do you mean the mess in your office, the office out there, the finance room, the back hallway, or the bathroom? I continued to smile, and just answered, Yes. Is the above a true story? You betcha! It gets relived almost each day now in some way or another. Our ministries have outgrown our physical space. What an exciting problem we have! It is in the midst of this excitement that our lay leadership met early in March to discuss our facility needs to support our ministries. Almost two years ago, I wrote the following in this newsletter: With increased programs, small groups, and outreach efforts comes a corresponding need for facilities to support them. How often have you tried to call the church office to reserve a meeting space, only to learn that the earliest you can get the parish hall is next month? Again, such a problem is one that many churches would love to have, but nevertheless the reality causes us to consider what we must do to accommodate both our present and future needs. A small group of vestry and lay leaders have been looking at possibilities for facility expansion. This involves a larger parish hall with corresponding kitchen capabilities, more meeting space, more storage, and more administration office space. During this calendar year, we will need to make some decisions about our transformation: Are we able to transform our views on financial giving in order to continue the transformation growth of our parish? With the successful completion of our sanctuary renovation, the exciting time for us to make these decisions to support our growth is now upon us. In the next months, the vestry and lay leaders will be engaging us all in some holy conversations on our growing ministries here. I look forward to celebrating our transformations as we go forward in our journey together. Peace, Fr. Marty More from the Rector at click on the Reflections button

New to St. Josephs? HELP I m new to Saint Joseph s Church and I don t know what I m supposed to do! If you are seeking a new Church home, either as an Episcopalian or as one interested in entering the Episcopal Church, we hope that you will give us the opportunity to speak with you in your home or at one of our many services. The Church Office is open Monday thru Friday 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. We are available to answer any questions you might have. If you have decided you wish to become a member of Saint Joseph s and you are already a Confirmed Communicant of the Episcopal Church, we can assist you in requesting a Letter of transfer from your former Parish. If you are not a member of any other Church and have decided that Saint Joseph s is where you want to be, there are membership forms that are available through the Church Office. Simply fill them in and return to the Office. If you wish to become a pledging member of Saint Joseph s Church, there are pledge cards located in the back of the Church (Narthex) or in the Parish Office. What does it mean to become a pledging member? A pledging member is when you have decided to make a financial commitment to support Saint Joseph s Church and the various ministries that are offered here. When you become a pledging member, you are able to participate in the election of vestry members at the annual meeting. If at any time you wish to speak with the Rector, just call the Church Office at (561) between the hours of 8:00 am to 3:00 pm Monday thru Thursday. If he is unavailable when you call, his assistant will make sure that he receives your message, and will call back at the earliest convenience. If you wish to join one of our various ministries, the back of the bulletin has the names of all our ministry leaders and which ministry they lead. Should you wish to contact any of them, there is a Parish Directory available with everyone s phone number and address. The Office staff and Fr. Marty Zlatic, Rector of Saint Joseph s Church, are always available. Please feel free to contact us at (561) We look forward to serving you. 2

EVANGELISM Brotherhood of St. Andrew Wow on Saturday, March 10th more than 80 people attended The Brotherhood and Friends outing to a spring-training baseball game in Jupiter. Children, teenagers and adults car pooled from the church and Chris Hagman watched the Dodgers battle the Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium. Although it was a hot day, everyone had fun and got to see some exciting baseball (even though the Home Team lost). Take me out to the ball game The Brotherhood of St. Andrew and St. Joseph's Episcopal Church were acknowledged by the game commentator..the crowd could tell by all the hollering where we were sitting. Before the game, many attendees supported the Craft Fair sponsored by the ECW and our first ever Green Market sponsored by the Tuesday Morning Bible Study. Watch for upcoming announcements about other Brotherhood social events where all are welcome. Chris Peace, More pictures at click on the Photo Gallery link 5

WORSHIP Lay Eucharistic Ministery Daughters of the King On January 7 th, I accepted the responsibilities of Cocoordinator for the Lay Eucha- Olive Gill ristic Ministers. With God's guidance and grace, and the support of the most loyal and dedicated men and women I will aspire that this ministry will continue to render great service to our parish family with the same diligence, vigor, and effectiveness, as my predecessors, Gene Seyffer and Diane Kinishi. I wish to congratulate and welcome David Drane and Bobbie Smith to our ministry.they completed their L.E.M. training on Feb.3rd Respectfully Submitted, With God s Guidance and Grace... I would like to invite to this ministry all interested parishioners who hear the call, or who would just like to be better informed. Please call the church office at or me at Olive Our Healing Shawl Ministry continues to be a source of blessing to those who have received these shawls as well as those parishioners who have prayerfully and lovingly made them. 14 healing shawls have been given to family or friends of St. Joseph s since the start of 2007, and we have 5 requests on our waiting list which will be filled as soon as shawls are available. To date 70 have been given since we started this ministry just one year ago, we feel that God has truly anointed this ministry! Also, I m excited to tell you that five more people from our congregation have volunteered to knit or crochet healing shawls. I wish to thank all who have, or are in the process of knitting a shawl. If you see someone in the parish carrying around a bag with knitting needles and yarn please take the opportunity to pray with them over their creation. For those who are new to our parish, The Daughters of the King (DOK) sponsors this ministry which gives healing shawls to individuals in treatment or recovering from various illnesses, surgeries, or suffering from a recent loss of a loved one. This is one way we pray to bring God s comfort, love, and healing touch into their lives at a time when it is needed the most. The shawls are blessed by one of our priests at the altar before being sent out. The DOK has received many letters of thanks expressing the comfort and support that the shawls have given to the recipients. Everyone is invited to participate in this ministry by making a shawl or a donation ($15.00 covers the cost of the yarn). The shawl instructions are easy (I ll be happy to mail you the instructions), and we have experienced ladies who will help you get started or make corrections if you drop a stitch or encounter a problem. Requests for shawls for our parish family members will be filled before requests for persons outside St. Joseph s. We fill the requests as soon as shawls are available crotchetier so please be patient if your request is not filled immediately. Our Healing Shawl Ministry is truly one that would welcome you if you feel led to participate in some way. Please contact Bobbie Smith ( ), Marg Marble ( ), or Barbara MacKenzie ( ) to help in this ministry of surrounding our loved ones with God s unconditional, healing love as they make their way to healing and wholeness. 7 WORSHIP Youth Band & Choir Greetings from the Saint Joseph s Youth Band! 2007 has already been such an adventure! During the reconstruction of the sanctuary our band was in limbo. The Charles Milling parish hall was packed and there would be no room for us without taking away chairs. With much deliberation we finally decided to hold the 10:15 at the Duncan Center a historic moment for our church. How cool was that service? Fran McKendree was in to lead the songs with us and we had several guest singers including Chelsea Eason and Charlotte Gorant! With great anticipation the sanctuary opened back up for the 50 th anniversary of our church. This new sanctuary floor was built to facilitate a variety of Audio/Visual aspects of worship including the Youth Band! So, on March 4 th we played our first service around the altar! What a blessing to be out of our cramped Transept corner and in line of sight of the parents of the performers! April and May will offer two more opportunities to join the band. It is a month-to-month commitment and all you have to do is come to rehearsals on Wednesday nights in the Youth House, 5:30 to 6:30 (6 th -12 th Grades). As summer approaches, so does Vacation Church Camp! Please sign up -and if you want to be on the music team then please call or Charles Milling at church! All Blessings, Charles Milling, Director Contemporary Music, Youth Band and Unplugged Worship Saint Joseph's Episcopal Church (561) charles@stjoesweb.org Unplug from without. Plug in from within. WHO ARE WE? A spiritual community in which there are no outcasts and all are welcome. WHAT GOES ON HERE? A disarming service exploring what God is calling us to do and be as followers of Christ. We unplug from the stiff traditions that might disengage seekers of faith. We strive for spiritual depth, encouraging tough questioning and thoughtful discussion. WHY SHOULD I COME? Because we respect each individual s personal faith-journey. Because we recognize that we do not have all of the answers. Because we do not moralize, patronize or beat anyone over the head with the Bible. Because you may come as you are. Because there are no prerequisites or expectations. Because the music is awesome. When and Where? 6:00 pm St. Joseph s Episcopal Church, 3300A S. Seacrest Blvd, Boynton Beach, FL

WORSHIP Acolytes Ordination John Born, Head Acolyte, Honored On Saturday, March 3, Father William, Sherry Thomas, Donna Born, and John Born attended Fr. William Stomski the annual Diocesan Acolyte Festival at Holy Family Episcopal Church, North Miami. About 350 acolytes were in attendance! Groups representing the many diverse parishes of our diocese were unloaded from vehicles along with the biggest variety of processional crosses, torches, banners, thuribles, and robes you could ever imagine. It looked more like a trade show than an acolyte celebration! The day began with breakfast then two workshops. After lunch everyone vested and took their items and formed a huge procession. We were lined up by parish then walked around the block as a unit and back to the entrance of the church where we processed into the church with joyful music, met the bishop at the chancel and received a blessing. It was the biggest procession we have ever seen! Then we had a Communion service and Bishop Frade preached. As a part of the Communion Service, an acolyte from every parish was honored, receiving both a certificate and a pin from the Bishop. There were individuals who were as young as 10 to those who have been doing it for over 30 Years! John Born, a senior, from our church was honored. He also had the privilege of reading the Second Lesson for the Eucharist. This had John sitting up at the altar very near to the Bishop. We are proud of all that John has done with our acolyte program, especially with leading, training, and guiding them with our own parish celebrations. By the Grace of God and with the consent of the People, The Right Reverend Mark H. Hollingsworth, Jr. Bishop of Ohio, will ordain Marie Judith Alexis on behalf of The Right Reverend Leopold Frade, Bishop of Southeast Florida, to the Sacred Order of Priest In Christ s One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church on Friday the Thirteenth day of April 2007 at Seven o clock in the evening at Trinity Cathedral 2230 Euclid Avenue Cleveland, OH Your prayers and presence are requested. Clergy: Red Stole Reception to follow. For those who would like to add to a cash purse to support Reverend Judith s ministry, please submit checks to Saint Joseph s Episcopal Church, with a note in the memo field that says Reverend Judith Alexis. Fr. Marty will be attending the ordination and will deliver the gift in person. 8

FELLOWSHIP Episcopal Church Women Sassy Sewers The whistle blew three times and it was all aboard in February as we boarded the Lady Atlantic for a cruise up the Intracoastal Waterway. What an enjoyable way to spend two hours relaxing and socializing as we sailed past the lovely Eloise Lee homes. Several women saw manatees swimming peacefully alongside the boat. Everyone had such a nice time and felt it s a must do again next year. The Sassy Sewers showed off fifty hand knitted and crocheted baby blankets at our parish s Fiftieth Anniversary Celebration on Saturday night March 3 rd. On Sunday the 4 th, Bishop Leo Frade blessed the blankets. This project was started Marla Peck several years ago when Fr. Marty asked the Sassy Sewers to come up with a project to honor our Fiftieth Anniversary. Members of the Sassy Sewers as well as parish members have been busy knitting and crocheting with love. The blankets will be donated to the Neonatal Intensive Care unit at Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Boynton Beach. Marla Peck, the Sassy Sewers group leader, wishes to thank all the contributors to this project for their dedication, love and very hard work. The Craft Fair is history. We earned $ which will be used to support our outreach ministries to Palanka, Forgotten Soldiers, and Food for the Poor. Our next big event is the annual BAZAAR, November 2 nd and 3 rd, just in time for holiday shopping. But before that there will be our famous Picnic at the Boynton Inlet in May and an Antiques Road Show in September. We hope to see more of you participate in this wonderful ministry and share the fellowship. In Christ s love, Eloise Lee The Sassy Sewers is one of the oldest Small Group Ministries at Saint Joseph s. They meet on Monday mornings year round. Classes begin Sunday, April 15, 2007 and culminate with Communion Milestone Eucharist on May 20, While we acknowledge that many of our children are already receiving communion at the Eucharist, it is important that we provide them the opportunity for deeper spiritual development. Parishioner and teacher Audrey Cate is this year s facilitator, assisted by parishioner and Saint Joseph s Episcopal School librarian Jennifer Williams. We ask that at least one parent participate in this part of your child s journey. This is an opportunity for you and your child to bond on a deeper level in your sharing of the faith while learning more about the Eucharist. Sessions will be held on Sunday mornings at 9 am in the Art room. The dates for these Sunday sessions are April 15, 22, 29 and May 6 and 13. In addition, we will schedule a family evening pizza party, in order to practice in the church and make the bread that we will use for communion at our special Holy First Communion Milestone Worship Service May 20, On Sunday, May 20, at the 10:15 am service, we will celebrate Eucharist in First Holy Communion/Communion Milestone. For some children this will be a traditional first communion. For others, who already receive the Eucharist, this will be a milestone celebration. We will all be celebrating the children s increased awareness and understanding of the Eucharist as gained through the formation process.
