Welcome Visitors We welcome all who worship with us today. Here are some notes about our congregation and our facility to help you feel at home among us. Nursery A staffed nursery is available for children from birth through age 5 on the sanctuary level down the hall past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents gather their children before communion so that they can come to the Table together. An usher will be glad to direct you. Restrooms are located on the sanctuary level just past the library. In addition to Men s and Women s rooms there is also a Family room with a changing table. Count Me In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We ask all worshipers to complete this each week. Special prayer requests may be made on the back of the form and if there are special sign ups you can do that on the back. Place it in the offering plate as it is circulated during the service. Grace Station is an outreach of the church office available every Sunday morning. Office Manager Christina Bogar is there to provide information about our church and to receive information such as address, phone or changes, prayer requests and news about illness or hospitalizations. Current newsletters and program information are located there. Look for the check in desk in the church gathering area. Check out the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church website at for more information on our congregation, our ministries and many opportunities for service and study. Join us again! We worship every Sunday at 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. throughout the summer, and would be honored to have you join us for worship again, soon, and often. 2

APOSTOLIC GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, And the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. 10:00 Cantate Domino Nancy Hill Cobb PRAYER OF THE DAY O God, on this day you open the hearts of your faithful people by sending into us your Holy Spirit. Direct us by the light of that Spirit, that we may have a right judgment in all things and rejoice at all times in your peace, through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. ALLELUIA WORD 3
GOSPEL: John 20:19-23 The Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY ELW #403 Like the Murmur of a Dove s Song CHILDREN S WORD (10:00) PRAYERS AND PEACE Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Please, God in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 5 OFFERTORY PRAYER Let us pray. God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love endures forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine. Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the world signs of your gracious presence in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. OPENING DIALOG The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. WORDS OF INSTITUTION In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering his love for us on the way, at the table, and to the end, we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We pray for the gift of your Spirit: in our gathering; within this meal; among your people; throughout the world. Blessing, praise, and thanks to you, holy God, through Christ Jesus, by your Spirit, in your church, without end. Amen. 5
LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. FRACTION AND INVITATION DISTRIBUTION TO THE FAITHFUL We welcome all who desire to receive the Lord's body and blood for the forgiveness of sin and renewal of life to join us for Holy Communion. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers. Red wine or white grape juice is available as each communicant chooses. Gluten-free wafers are available. Young children and others who do not commune are invited and welcome to come forward for a blessing. MUSIC DURING THE DISTRIBUTION LAMB OF GOD 6

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK Monday, June 9, 2014 Columba, died 597; Aidan, died 651; Bede, died 735; renewers of the church These three monks from the British Isles helped keep the light of learning alive during the Middle Ages. Columba founded three monasteries off the coast of Scotland. Aidan was a pastor who led people to works of charity. The Venerable Bede was a Bible translator, historian, and hymnwriter. Wednesday, June 11 Barnabas, Apostle Barnabas was not numbered among the twelve apostles, but the book of Acts gives him that title. After Paul was converted to Christianity, Barnabas welcomed him to Jerusalem, and later the two traveled together on missionary journeys. Saturday, June 14 Basil the Great, Bishop of Caesarea, died 379; Gregory, Bishop of Nyssa, died around 385; Gregory of Nazianzus, Bishop of Constantinople, died around 389; Macrina, theologian, died around 379 The Cappadocian fathers, as the three men in this group are known, explored the mystery of the Holy Trinity. Basil's monastic rule forms the basis for Eastern monastic life. Gregory of Nazianzus defended orthodox Christianity in Constantinople. Gregory of Nyssa, Basil's younger brother, wrote on the spiritual life. Macrina, older sister of Basil and Gregory of Nyssa, was the leader of a community dedicated to asceticism, meditation, and prayer. 9

Announcements Greenwood Car Show on June 28th We're gearing up for another exciting Greenwood Car Show and hope you can join us. This is PRLC's chance to welcome tens of thousands of visitors and participate in one of the city's best attended annual festivals. We'll have a full musical lineup on our front lawn (including our in-house blues band Left Turn on Blue), coffee and cookies, and plenty to see all up and down Greenwood Ave. Will you donate cookies or time at the hospitality table to help make this event a success? Please mark your Count Me In form if you can contribute. Ministry Opportunities Ever wonder who you should talk to about becoming part of the Food Bank, or being an Usher, getting involved with Mary's Place or a lot of the other rewarding volunteer positions at Phinney? There's a new brochure - Ministry Opportunities - that you can pick up at the Grace Station that gives both a brief description and the name of the contact person for each ministry. There are wonderful possibilities to put your gifts and talents to work, and this is a great first step. Food Bank Needs Grocery Bags If you live outside the Seattle city limits, you might still accumulate plastic grocery bags. If you have more than you need, our food bank can definitely use them! Please bring them in to church and place them in the large Food Bank basket in the narthex. Thank you! Thank you to all Mary s Place Volunteers Once again last month we offered homeless women and their children a welcome in God s house for a week. Homemade meals were lovingly prepared. Overnight hosts connected with kids eager to play games or read books. Van drivers safely transported guests. Groceries were purchased; eggs were hardboiled; 15 loads of laundry were washed, dried and folded. Money was donated to the Outreach Fund to help defray expenses. Coordinators dealt with numerous behind-the-scenes details. Volunteers were patient and flexible. Please mark your calendars for our next hosting August 12-19, when we will once again roll up our sleeves for God s work our hands. 13
