Registration will also be needed to receive a certificate of eligibility to be a Godparent for Baptism; to be a Sponsor for Confirmation; to enroll your child in Religious Education; to begin Baptismal preparation for your child (unless permission is received from your parish); and to prepare for Marriage. Interested in Becoming Catholic? Are you Missing Sacraments? Are you in a Sacramental Marriage? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process through which adults join or complete their initiation into the Roman Catholic Church. RCIA is for three groups of adults: 1. Those who are not baptized. 2. Those who were baptized into another Christian denomination and wish to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. 3.Baptized Catholics who were not fully formed in the Catholic faith and have not completed their initiation: those who have not received the Sacraments of Confirmation and/or Eucharist. Fr. Javier O'Connor leads RCIA classes in English on Mondays, beginning Sep. 17, and in Spanish on Wednesdays, beginning Sep. 19, 7:30-9:00 pm. Classes are held at Christendom College/Notre Dame Graduate (4407 Sano Street, Alexandria, VA). For couples not married in the church, our priests are willing to help you prepare for the Sacrament of Matrimony, an important step to receiving the other Sacraments and living the Catholic faith. Altar Server Picnic on July 26 Bishop Burbidge invites altar servers to the Diocesan Altar Server Picnic, Thursday, Jul. 26, 10 am-2 pm at Lake Fairfax Park in Reston. Enjoy the outdoors by playing sports and games with other servers. Lunch is provided. If interested in attending, please contact s.gray@queenofapostles.org by Jul. 16 to obtain a permission form. Thank You for your generous contribution to the Poor Box. This weekend s collection will go toward the Parish Charity. Next weekend s collection will go toward ACCA and the Missionaries of Charity. Religious Education Registration for the Queen of Apostles Religious Education school year is open to students in kindergarten (age 5) through high school. Classes, taught in English, meet on Sundays, 9-10:15 am in the, Sep.- Jun. Parish and returning families are given priority in Religious Education enrollment. Registration forms are available at the parish office and at New students need to provide birth and baptismal certificates. Tuition may be paid by check or cash. Tuition until Aug. 1: $70 for 1 child; $120 for 2 children; $150 for 3 children from the same family. Please do not delay in registering as some grades will reach capacity soon. Because each year builds on the next year of faith formation, students must attend at least 2 consecutive years of Religious Education before a Sacrament is administered and have no more than three absences in the school year. A student is show evidence of desire and preparation for a Sacrament. Generally, First Penance/First Holy Communion is received in grade 2 and higher. Confirmation is received in grade 8 and higher. Thank you for considering the Religious Education Program at Queen of Apostles. Families with unbaptized children who are under the age of 7 years old should contact the parish office to make arrangements for baptism as soon as possible. Called to be a catechist? Those who are 18 years and older are required to have a Virginia Background Check and attend a Virtus seminar. Please contact the parish office. Rising 8th graders and high school students who are on track for Confirmation in 2019 may begin gaining service hours. 3 Pastor s Letter What God has Joined Together, no Human Being Must Separate (Mt 19:6) We continue our reflection on Humanae Vitae, still on the nature of Conjugal Love. St. John Paul the Great began his Theology of the Body series with the headline s quote. The Pharisees ask Jesus about divorce, and Jesus recalls God s plan. What God created in the beginning, what He found to be very good, is that man and woman would become one flesh. And God s blessing was Be fertile and multiply (Gen 1:28). Now, my question is: What does contraception separate? First, contraception separates conjugal love (unitive meaning) and fertility (procreative meaning). Husband and wife don t become one flesh any more. There is an intimate contact, but there is a barrier (even only chemical) which hinders the spousal union. And certainly the one flesh which is the child is excluded. In doing so, contraception separates the spouses from God s blessing which is intentionally removed. Second, contraception separates body and soul. The body is considered a raw material which I can manipulate with technology, while only the personal choice matters. Which are the consequences? If technology allows me to oppose God s blessing, I will use the pill. If technology allows me to reconfigure my body to redefine it, I will do it, even if that is a rejection of what is very good: to be male and female at the image and likeness of God. Third, contraception separates marriage and sexuality. Contraception allows satisfying the instinct s urgency. Thus one becomes weaker in front of the temptation to forget the other person to focus on my own satisfaction. Therefore the intercourse becomes something without responsibility or consequences. It is about the immediate satisfaction. This has nothing to do with neither love nor marriage. Lastly, pregnancy is perceived as an anomaly which needs to be healed. The ultimate remedy for this unhealthy situation is abortion. Parenthood is not a gift which husband and wife give each other. Children are not God s blessing and gift. It becomes something under the Human being s technological control. Does it makes sense to state that the bitter fruits of the sexual revolution and contraception are divorce, sexual harassment and violence, sterilization, in vitro fertilization, transgenderism, abortion with euthanasia being the last link in the chain? I know that this is not politically correct. But that is not the point. The point is: is this the truth? Does not contraception separate what God has joined? Even more, does not contraception separate us from God? May Jesus, who healed the woman afflicted with hemorrhages, heal our sick culture and stop this bleeding. May Jesus, who arose Jairus daughter, make us Apostles of the Civilization of Love and the Culture of Life. Prayer to Saint Benedict O glorious St. Benedict, sublime model of all virtues, pure vessel of God's grace! Behold me, humbly kneeling at thy feet. I implore thy loving heart to pray for me before the throne of God. To thee I have recourse in all the dangers which daily surround me. Shield me against my enemies, inspire me to imitate thee in all things. May thy blessing be with me always, so that I may shun whatever God forbids and avoid the occasions of sin. Graciously obtain for me from God those favors and graces of which I stand so much in need, in the trials, miseries and afflictions of life. Thy heart was always so full of love, compassion, and mercy towards those who were afflicted or troubled in any way. Thou didst never dismiss without consolation and assistance any one who had re-course to thee. I therefore invoke thy powerful intercession, in the confident hope that thou wilt hear my prayers and obtain for me the special grace and favor I so earnestly implore (mention it), if it be for the greater glory of God and the welfare of my soul. Help me, O great St. Benedict, to live and die as a faithful child of God, to be ever submissive to His holy will, and to attain the eternal happiness of heaven. Amen. Page 3

Hispanic Pilgrimage to Pray for Vocations Join the Hispanic Pilgrimage to Pray for Vocations on Saturday Jul. 21 to the Shrine of St. Anthony in Ellicott City, MD.
