3 Pastor s Letter Divine Mercy Sunday Les Misérables is a well-known story written by Victor Hugo in the mid 1800 s. The musical version made it popular and was produced as a movie in The author himself explains how the story is about a progress from evil to good, from injustice to justice, from falsehood to truth, from night to day, from appetite to conscience, from corruption to life; from bestiality to duty, from hell to heaven, from nothingness to God (Vol. 5, Book 1, Chapter 20). The story moves forward as Jean Valjean, after 19 years being in jail meets the charitable Bishop Myriel whom offers him a new beginning in his life. Valjean builds a new life in which he grows wealthier becoming an honest business man who sincerely cares for the needy. On the other side, the implacable inspector Javert, who blindly serves the law is also blind to accept Valjean s redemption. Is redemption possible? For Javert it is not, and law has to be strictly reinforced. However, it is evident that Jean Valjean is a redeemed person. This dilemma will lead Javert to a tragic end. Is redemption possible? Is it possible that a former convict would become a great social benefactor? Benny Se Teo after more than a decade in and out of prison created the Eighteen Chefs restaurant chain who hires ex-offender and troubled youths. Is it possible that a terrorist would become a political hero? Wilson Bueno Largo Isaza deserted the Colombian FARC becoming the hero who liberated after 8 years a hostage and became an advocate to abandonment terrorist actions. Even more, can a sinner become a saint? Endless is the list of noteable sinners who eventually became saints: St. Mary Magdalene, St. Matthew, St. Agustin, St. Vladimir, St. Ignatius of Loyola Today we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. God is merciful because he redeemed us, giving a new beginning in human history. In the Cross he transformed death into life, darkness into light, sin into grace, hatred into love. And this transformation is renewed in the Eucharistic transformation of bread and wine and of the faithful receiving communion. This transformation happens also in the other sacraments. This is mercy: a transformation, a new beginning, the redemption of the person. Many times mercy is understood as an easy it will be fine, it s OK. Sometimes it even becomes a justification to remain in a sinful situation. No. Mercy gives a new beginning. The transformation of the sinner into a saint. Do we believe in Mercy? Do we believe in Redemption? Today, the celebrates Divine Mercy Sunday. In honor of this special Feast, the Adoration Chapel will be open from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm. At 1:00 pm, the Blessed Sacrament will return to the church where the Divine Mercy Chaplet will be prayed. Benediction and Reposition of the Blessed Sacrament will follow. My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and a shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day are opened all the divine floodgates through which graces flow. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity. Everything that exists has come from the very depths of My most tender mercy. Every soul in its relation to Me will contemplate My love and mercy throughout eternity. The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My mercy. (Jesus to St. Faustina) Page 3

5 Nourishing Our Souls With Holy Scripture Readings for Next Week Third Sunday of Easter Acts 3:13-15, Ps 4:2, 4, 7-8, 9 1 Jn 2:1-5A Lk 24:35-48 A Letter from the Pastoral Council The Pastoral Council met in our newest property of the Parish on March 14. Our Parish has been truly blessed over the past five years with new parishioners and new ministries. We are at the point that our facilities needs exceed our current capacity. Hence, the purchase of the home on Applegarth Court. (Hopefully, you took the opportunity to attend an open house.) The Council discussed how this home will allow us to meet many of our Parish needs. Before the opportunity to purchase the Applegarth property came about, the first thought was to build a new pastoral center. By buying this house and moving the priests residence to Applegarth Court, we can avoid any new construction and renovate and expand what we currently have, including the current rectory into a true Pastoral Center. Additional parish needs discussed at the meeting are new lighting and sound for the sanctuary, a new HVAC for the church (the current HVAC is beyond end of life), a new church organ (ours is falling apart), architectural finishing in the church, an expanded playground for the school, and renovated school restrooms. Of course, all of these projects take money to make them happen, so we discussed kicking off a Capital Campaign later this year. The Campaign will be an opportunity for all of us in the Parish, acting as good stewards, to make an offering to care for the current and future needs of our Parish. As I shared in my previous note, remember that the growth of the parish depends on you contributing your time, talents, and treasure to the continued growth of the parish. Thank you for being a part of our parish family. Have a Blessed Easter season. Chip Souser Chair, Pastoral Council Adorers Needed Urgent need for permanent Adorer (on a weekly basis) on Thursday morning, 1 am- 2 am. If you are interested in supporting the Adoration Ministry during this hour, please contact Alexa Urban at (703) or moleski47@gmail.com. Adorers are needed (on a weekly basis) on Thursday 2 pm-3 pm, and Friday 3 pm-4 pm. If you are able to be a scheduled Adorer on a regular basis, please contact Rosalie Mainey at (703) or rosalieam@msn.com. Volunteers Needed Tepeyac OB/GYN, a pro-life medical practice, and its fundraising and educational organization Divine Mercy Care, are in need of volunteers to assist with administrative duties at their offices at 4001 Fair Ridge Drive in Fairfax, VA. The ideal volunteer could offer 6-10 hours per week during business hours. Please contact info@divinemercycare.org if you are interested.
