3 Pastor s Letter The Logic of Giving Most of us are already planning our Thanksgiving day. In the recent years I celebrated it in Ohio with a family once parishioners at QofA. In addition to the Eggs Fiorentina for the next morning s breakfast, I remember when the father solemnly reads President Lincoln s proclamation on Oct 3, 1863 before the Thanksgiving meal: The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God Gratitude is an essential treat of God s children. Last Sunday s Gospel reminded us that the Kingdom of God belongs to those childlike, those who are grateful. Whether we are wealthy or financially challenged, gratitude is needed. And gratitude naturally ushers us into the logic of giving. I received so that I can have the joy of sharing with others. It is not about how much do I have. Today we are making available the Parish Annual Report. In the Masses Dave Cook, our Director of Operations and Stewardship, is presenting them. Now we are in our annual Offertory Program. The Lord is asking you to reflect upon the many blessings that God has given you. This prayerful consideration will lead you to make a sacrificial commitment in gratitude to continue the Lord s work in our parish. The Annual Report offers an update on the parish finances, ministry life and projects in process. This year we have been blessed with the opportunity to buy a house adjacent to the school for a new Priests residence. This opportunity made it easy to devote to ministry and office use the current residence, which the Parish family will soon enjoy. Other projects are asking for a Capital Campaign, which will run in the coming months. A Capital Campaign is part of the Parish Life because capital projects need an extra investment beyond the operations. Previous Capital Campaigns made possible the Gym and our Church vestibule. Nearly 40% of Parish households have registered within the last 6 years. They now have the opportunity to take ownership of the facilities built by others and to make their contribution, not without sacrifice, to the coming generations of parishioners and the growing ministerial needs of the parish. This year, in our offertory program, Jesus invitation will sound more powerfully: Go, sell what you have, and give to [the] poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me (Mk 10:21). The rich man went away sad. We will not to go sad. We want to enter grateful and joyfully into the logic of giving. The main theme of this Sunday s Gospel (Mk 10:17-30) is wealth. Jesus teaches that it is very difficult for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God, but not impossible; in fact, God can win over the heart of a person who has great possessions and spur him or her to solidarity and sharing with the needy, with the poor, to entering, that is, the logic of giving. In this way he places himself on the path of Jesus Christ (Benedict XVI, Angelus Oct 14, 2012). The Fifteen Promises of Mary Granted to Those Who Pray the Rosary 1. Whosoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary shall receive signal graces. 2. I promise my special protection and the greatest Graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary. 3. The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against Hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies. 4. It will cause good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant Mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of men [and women] from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire for Eternal Things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means. 5. The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary shall not perish. 6. Whosoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying himself [herself] to the consideration of its Sacred Mysteries shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not perish by an unprovided death; if he be just he shall remain in the Grace of God, and become worthy of Eternal Life. 7. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the Sacraments of the Church. (To be continued ) Page 3

As stars illumine the night, so chosen souls illumine the earth. And the more perfect a soul is, the stronger and the more far-reaching is the light shed by it. It can be hidden and unknown, even to those closest to it, and yet its holiness is reflected in souls even to the most distant extremities of the world. (Jesus to St. Faustina, Diary, 1601) Page 4
