Altar Servers Congratulations to our new altar servers who have completed training: Charles, David, Jonathan, Liam, Marcos, Matthew, and Robel. Thank you for serving our Lord in the Eucharist. A Blessing of Altar Servers will take place during Masses this weekend. In November, altar server and parish families will begin hosting the Vocations Crucifix. The Vocations Crucifix is a daily reminder to talk about religious vocations and the importance of these vocations to serve the Lord and others. Religious Education Thank you for choosing the Religious Education Program at Queen of Apostles. If you have an RE tuition balance, please pay by Dec. 2. On Nov. 4, the Sacrament of Confirmation registration form (page 3 of the packet) and $60 fee (cash or check) are due from grade 8 and high school students who are eligible for Confirmation. Pastor s Letter Political Charity This coming Tuesday is Election Day. This Sunday s Gospel reminds us our most fundamental responsibility: Which is the first of all the commandments? (Mk 12:28).

3 Pastor s Letter Political Charity This coming Tuesday is Election Day. This Sunday s Gospel reminds us our most fundamental responsibility: Which is the first of all the commandments? (Mk 12:28). We know the response: Love of God and Love of Neighbor. Is there room for this twofold love in our political arena, and on Election Day? Let s first see how Pope Benedict connects love of God and neighbor: If the love of God has planted deep roots in a person, then he is able to love even those who do not deserve it, as God does us We learn from God to seek only what is good and never what is evil. We learn to look at each other not only with our eyes, but with the eyes of God, which is the gaze of Jesus Christ. A gaze that begins in the heart and does not stop at the surface, that goes beyond appearances and manages to capture the deepest aspirations of the other: waiting to be heard, for caring attention, in a word: love. But the opposite is also true: that by opening myself to another, just as he or she is, by reaching out, by making myself available, I am also opening myself to know God, to feel that he is there and is good. Love of God and love of neighbor are inseparable and are mutually related. Jesus did not invent one or the other but revealed that they are essentially a single commandment and did so not only through the Word, but especially with his testimony In the Eucharist he gives us this two-fold love, giving himself, because, nourished by this Bread, we love one another as he has loved us (Angelus Nov 4, 2012). Jesus calls to love and serve others. Our voting this Tuesday should be an act of love and service to the common good of the society. That is what I would call Political Charity. Participating in the civic life: neighborhood, county, state, federal we practice Charity. In his Encyclical Charity in Truth, Pope Benedict urges us to promote the common good: The more we strive to secure a common good corresponding to the real needs of our neighbours, the more effectively we love them. Every Christian is called to practise this charity, in a manner corresponding to his vocation and according to the degree of influence he wields in the pólis (city). This is the institutional path we might also call it the political path of charity When animated by charity, commitment to the common good has greater worth than a merely secular and political stand would have (n.7). Love to God and neighbor No aspect of our life should be apart from faith. Neither voting nor other ways of advocacy for the common good and fundamental values as the inalienable right for life (vs. Abortion or Euthanasia), the sanctity of marriage or religious freedom. The Virginia Bishops, M. Burbidge and B. Knestout, teach: To be the faithful citizens our Lord calls us to be, we must form our consciences through prayer, attentiveness to the Church s teachings, and an understanding of issues and of candidates positions By voting on November 6 and advocating year round, let us be citizens who are truly faithful to the Lord.
