Special thanks to Dennis Burprich, our construction engineer who could figure it out, fixed it or hauled it away. We all worked together well, raised $2855 for the church, and had fun in the process. 4 Upcoming Special Services: ANNOUNCEMENTS July 27th is the day of St. Panteleimon the Great-Martyr and Healer, whose relics are in our church s altar. We will have Liturgy at 8:30 AM, and include prayers for the living, for their health and salvation. The Dormition Fast begins on August 1st (see below). On August 1st, which is also a day set aside to honor the Holy Cross, we will have Divine Liturgy at 9:00 AM, and a lesser Blessing of Water service. (Bring a container if you want to take any home!) We will also remember our founding pastor, Fr. Paul Tkach and Paňi Helen Tkach that morning, and offer a panachida for their perpetual remembrance at their graves (or in the church, if the weather is bad). We will also have two intercessory services to the Mother of God during the first part of the Dormition Fast: a Moleben on August 1st at 6:00 PM, and the Paraklis Service on Wednesday, August 3rd at 6:00 PM. Each will include prayers for the living and anointing with the myrrh (oil) from the wonder-working Taylor Icon of the Mother of God. Fr. David still has the prayer lists for the LIVING from last year. If you want to make additions or corrections (to remove someone who has passed away) please see Fr. David. To submit a new list of names of the living, please use the sheets available in the vestibule, or father.david@stjohnacroc.org. The Dormition Fast is August This short fast is in honor of the Mother of God in preparation for her Dormition on August 15th. It is the summer Lent before the summer Pascha! The full, traditional fast calls for abstention from meat and dairy products for this time. At a minimum, we are to abstain from meat on Wednesdays and Fridays of this period. As always, do not ask what is the least you have to do, but what is the most that you can do! Confession: If you haven t been to Confession since Lent, now is the perfect time to go! Fr. David will be hearing confessions before evening services as scheduled, and is also available before Liturgy on Sundays (but no later than 8:45 AM). Church School Registration Forms are now available. Summer will be over before we know it, and Church School will begin on Sunday, September 11, Parents, please get these forms to Fr. David by August 21.

5 GOLF SCRAMBLE NOTES Mark your calendars! The 2016 Golf Scramble will be held on Saturday, August 20th at Oak Tree Country Club. Shotgun Start will be at 8:30 AM. The post-golfing meal will again be held at our church hall, and will feature our signature all-youcan-eat buffet with spit roast lamb, roast chicken, sausage and peppers, side dishes, desserts and beverages. Dinner will begin to be served at 2:30 PM. We will also hold the ever-popular Basket Raffle at this dinner. 6 FROM THE DIOCESE National ACRY Convention 2016 The Potomac A.C.R.Y. Chapter #25 is proud to be the hosts for the upcoming National A.C.R.Y. Convention, which will take place Labor Day weekend, September 2nd through the 5th, 2016 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center located in Bethesda, MD. In addition to the usual convention business, which in recent years has been streamlined, there will be many opportunities to gather in worship and fellowship and to tour the Greater Washington DC Metro Area. Planned excursions include a choice of touring the Hillwood Museum, Arlington National Cemetery and a self-guided tour of the Monuments on the Washington, D.C. National Mall Please visit the special 2016 Convention Web Page via ACROD.ORG for all necessary registration information. Deadline for all convention related registration including, hotel, meals, program book, and excursions is August 1. Online Bible Study: Your Input Is Needed! JOHNSTOWN, PA -- For the past four years, a weekly on-line scripture study has been broadcast live from St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Warren, Ohio. Taught by the Very Rev. Protopresbyter Kenneth Bachofsky, Professor of Scripture at Christ the Saviour Seminary, the participants have studied the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. John and the book of Revelation. These weekly lectures, which are delivered in a clear and concise manner, drawing on the patristic voice of the Fathers of the Church, have provided an opportunity for hundreds of viewers, world-wide to deepen their understanding of Sacred Scripture from the Orthodox Christian perspective. Some of the archived videos have been viewed over 3000 times! Many Diocesan parishes are using the archived class videos as springboards for discussion within their own Scripture Study classes. The study of the Book of Revelation will come to a close shortly. While it has been suggested by members of the current study group that the Book of Genesis be the next topic of discussion, Fr. Kenneth Bachofsky is offering the opportunity for on-line viewers to offer their suggestions as to what the next book of the Bible to study should be. 7 Thoughts on Stewardship by Dan Hromyak "Jesus said to him, 'Go and do likewise.'" - Luke 10:37 This was Jesus' command at the end of the Good Samaritan story. But did you know that the Samaritans and Jews despised each other. The moral of the story is to love our neighbor, who may be someone you don't know, someone who looks different than you or someone you don't like, without expecting anything in return. "...I am a minister in accordance with God's stewardship given to me to bring to completion for you the word of God." - Colosians 1:25 Believe it or not, we are all called to evangelize - to continuously grow in our knowledge and relationship with Jesus and to share it with others. We may not be called to evangelize like St. Paul, but we should look for opportunities to share our Faith with those closest to us, like our family and friends. "Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." - Luke 11:9 Jesus assures us that if we ask Him, God will take care of what we need. The problem is that in our culture we often confuse what we really need with what we simply want. Many people need very little. However, we usually want so much more.
